It brings a touchscreen and HomeKit/Siri control to selected HVAC and heating systems, but it is not a universal thermostat: the S3 uses Zigbee through an Aqara gateway, is rated for 220–250 V AC, and is intended for China-market installations.
What Aqara announced
The Aqara Smart Thermostat S3, model ZNWKQ11LM, first appeared among the company’s China-market products in late 2021 and was formally announced in mainland China in March 2022. Launch coverage described HomeKit and Siri integration, a touchscreen, and control options for several residential HVAC and heating configurations. HomeKit News’ launch report documents that announcement; it does not establish a global release.

The most useful way to think of the S3 is as a China-market HVAC control panel, not a drop-in replacement for every wall thermostat. Its wiring, electrical requirements, gateway and regional ecosystem all matter alongside Apple Home compatibility.
What systems it can control
Aqara’s materials and launch coverage describe selected applications including central air conditioning, fan-coil systems, water heating, water-based underfloor heating and, depending on configuration, fresh-air equipment. These are equipment categories, not a promise that the S3 will work with any system in those categories.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple Adaptive Temperature - With the Apple Home app, Adaptive Temperature uses your iPhone to adjust the thermostat based on activity states like 'home', 'sleep', 'away' and 'extended away'. This provides comfort upon arrival home and saves energy when away, without the complicated steps of creating or managing schedules. (Note: Adaptive Temperature requires a home hub (Apple TV or HomePod) and an iPhone or Apple Watch, all running version 26 or later.)
- Apple Clean Energy Guidance: Smarter Energy Savings - With the Apple Home app, Clean Energy Guidance makes small temperature adjustments to use cleaner grid times when electricity may cost less, while maintaining comfort. The forecast is personalized for your home location using environmental and grid data. (Note: Clean Energy Guidance is available only in the contiguous U.S.)
- Easy Installation with Wide HVAC Compatibility - Designed to fit most homes, W200 works with about 85% of HVAC systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, and PTAC units. No C-wire? Simply add the Aqara C-Wire Adapter (sold separately) for stable power. We even include a trim kit to easily cover old wiring and keep your wall looking clean and fresh.
- Functions as a Smart Display for Your Front Door - W200 works as a visual control panel for your Aqara video doorbell (only compatible with G410/G400, G4 excluded) and smart lock, showing visitor snapshots right on the screen and letting you unlock the door with a simple tap. No need to open an app on your phone or run to the door.
- Control Your Climate Your Way: App, Voice Assistant, or One-Tap Button Control – You can manually adjust the temperature via the app, or through voice assistants like Alexa or Siri when connected. You can also use the W100 wireless sensor (sold separately) for quick one-tap physical control. Perfect for easy changes from the couch, bed, or anywhere in your home.
Before considering it, have a qualified HVAC or electrical professional identify the existing controller and wiring. Compatibility can depend on the valve arrangement (including two-wire or three-wire valves), required fan-speed outputs, available live and neutral conductors, and the connected loads. The S3’s documented three valve-load channels may suit certain fan-coil or hydronic arrangements, but they do not make it a general-purpose controller for conventional forced-air furnaces or heat pumps.

How HomeKit control works
The S3 is not a standalone Wi-Fi thermostat. Its documented wireless protocol is Zigbee, and the manual says a compatible Aqara gateway is required. The intended control path is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The S3 communicates with an Aqara Zigbee gateway.
- The gateway connects the device to Aqara Home.
- Aqara makes supported thermostat or HVAC functions available to Apple Home/HomeKit.
- You can then use Apple Home or Siri for the functions exposed by Aqara.
HomeKit compatibility does not guarantee that every S3 setting will appear in Apple Home. Confirm the exact exposed controls if you rely on individual fan speeds, valve modes, fresh-air settings or custom scenes. Launch coverage reported Siri control, but actual behavior can depend on Aqara’s mappings, firmware, gateway and account region, as well as Apple’s language and region settings.

HomeKit is not proof of Matter support
Aqara’s published S3 specification and manual identify Zigbee, not Matter, as the device’s connection protocol. Aqara later described Matter support for parts of its ecosystem, including compatible hubs and bridged devices; that general information does not establish that the S3 itself is a native Matter device. See Aqara’s Matter overview and its announcement about its first Matter-compatible devices. The available model-specific material supports describing the S3 as HomeKit-compatible through Aqara’s ecosystem, not as a Matter-over-Thread thermostat.
Sensing and installation considerations
Temperature and humidity sensing
The panel has built-in temperature and humidity sensing and can use associated Aqara temperature/humidity sensors. The manual says the built-in sensor is used by default, while an associated external sensor can be selected instead. An external sensor may be useful if the wall location runs warmer or cooler than the occupied part of the room; check the chosen configuration to confirm which sensor actually governs automatic regulation.

If no external sensor is connected, the Secondary screen defaults to the local weather report for temperature and humidity info. (Please note: Linking with an Aqara temperature and humidity sensor and enabling the Secondary screen display are only available through the Aqara Home app on Zigbee mode when connected to an Aqara hub
- [Remote HVAC Control Integration] The W100 supports pairing with a third-party IR air-conditioner via Aqara Hub M3, allowing wireless remote control of the HVAC system.(Only zigbee mode) You can adjust temperature, mode, and other settings directly on the device, optimizing comfort and energy efficiency without needing to access the HVAC device physically. This feature adds convenience and ensures a comfortable living environment
Wall box, wiring and professional work
The S3 is designed for an 86-type wall box, and its body is 41.4 mm deep. Check that the box and surrounding trim provide enough clearance before purchase. Aqara’s manual illustrates several system-specific configurations, including three-speed fan-coil systems and two-wire or three-wire valve arrangements; those diagrams are not a reason to treat installation as a casual DIY job. The manual warns that installation involves mains electricity and should be performed professionally in accordance with applicable electrical standards.

Additionally, the Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor can control other connected devices such as Aqara Smart Plug to ensure that your fan or humidifier maintains a constant level of comfort for you and your family.***Requires Aqara Hub, not third-party hub.
- [Accurate Measurement] Utilizes high-quality sensor from the industry-leading manufacturer, Sensirion.(Please avoid installing the Aqara Temperature Sensor in environments with extreme temperatures, such as inside a refrigerator.) Note: Please pull the plastic battery tab out before long-pressing the reset button to start the device. If the device disconnects, please ensure the battery has power. If not, please rotate the temperature sensor to remove the battery cover and replace the battery.
Why many U.S. homes are a poor fit
The S3’s 220–250 V AC rating is a major constraint for U.S. buyers. Many North American thermostats control HVAC equipment through low-voltage 24 V wiring, which is not equivalent to the S3’s stated electrical design. Do not connect an S3 to conventional thermostat cable on the assumption that HomeKit compatibility makes the wiring interchangeable; have a qualified professional verify both the control topology and electrical ratings.
Physical fit and ecosystem support also need checking. The Chinese 86-type wall-box format may not match a North American box, and an imported unit may not work with a buyer’s usual Aqara account or gateway. A China-region device may require the mainland-China Aqara server or a China-market hub; buying through an importer does not guarantee account access, firmware updates, language options, local support or warranty service.
Availability and regional support
What is established is a mainland-China announcement and official China-market documentation. Aqara’s mainland-China overview says its relevant product information and services are intended for mainland China, excluding Hong Kong and Macao. The available official material does not verify an international, U.S. or European release of this exact S3 model.
That distinction matters if considering an import: the product may be physically obtainable without having official local support, suitable gateway availability or account-region compatibility. The retrieved manual’s service terms describe mainland-China consumer protections, including a seven-day no-reason return for e-commerce purchases, a 15-day exchange for product-quality issues and one-year repair coverage for product-quality faults; these are not established as U.S. or international warranty terms. Launch coverage also reported an Aqara voice assistant called “Xiao Qiao” with Mandarin-language operation, not an English-language feature.
Quick Recap
Who should consider the S3?
- Worth investigating: A buyer in mainland China with a compatible 220–250 V fan-coil, hydronic or other supported installation, an appropriate 86-type wall box and a compatible Aqara gateway.
- Usually a poor fit: A U.S. homeowner with a conventional 24 V thermostat system, or anyone whose installer cannot verify compatible outputs and loads.
- Look elsewhere or verify first: A buyer who requires native Matter, official local warranty coverage, hub-free operation, or confirmed support for every advanced HVAC function in Apple Home.
- Before importing: Confirm the gateway and account region, wall-box fit, wiring and load ratings, language expectations, firmware access and seller’s support terms.
