Apple is reportedly developing a high-end tabletop smart-home device with an iPad-like display mounted on a thin robotic arm. The screen could tilt, rotate, and reposition itself toward people in a room. However, it is not an announced Apple product, has no confirmed name or price, and the latest reporting places the robotic version in 2027—not 2026.

What Apple is reportedly building

According to Bloomberg reporting summarized by Engadget, Apple has been working on a tabletop smart-home device combining a display with a movable robotic mechanism.

The reported design resembles a small iPad attached to a narrow arm beneath or behind the screen. Earlier reporting described motorized tilting and 360-degree rotation. Later reporting described a roughly 7-inch display that could extend several inches in different directions. These are reported prototype characteristics, not final specifications.

The device would reportedly include a camera for FaceTime and room-aware interaction. Rather than remaining pointed in one direction like a conventional smart display, it could turn toward the person speaking or reposition itself for better viewing.

  • FAST WI-FI CONNECTIVITY — Wi-Fi 6 gives you fast access to your files, uploads, and downloads, and lets you seamlessly stream your favorite shows.

“iPad-like” describes the form and interface concept. It does not establish that the product would run ordinary iPadOS, use an iPad display, or function as a detachable tablet. Similarly, this would be a tabletop robotic mechanism—not a mobile humanoid or autonomous household robot.

What it might do

The broader product concept is intended to provide a dedicated Apple interface for the home. Reported use cases include:

  • Controlling lights, thermostats, cameras, locks, and other smart-home accessories.
  • Making FaceTime video calls.
  • Playing music and other media.
  • Showing calendars, photos, recipes, widgets, and household information.
  • Monitoring security cameras and other home activity.
  • Responding to Siri and Apple Intelligence commands.
  • Turning or repositioning the display through voice commands.

The robotic model may be intended to feel more conversational and socially aware than a stationary screen. Reports have mentioned ideas such as a visual personality, persistent memory, proactive suggestions, and room-aware interaction. Those features are considerably more speculative than basic home control or video calling and would depend on Apple’s still-evolving Siri and artificial-intelligence software.

Why would the screen move?

A moving display could be useful in a kitchen or shared living space. It might face someone cooking at a counter, turn toward another person during a video call, or remain visible to several people without anyone physically moving the device.

That movement could also make the assistant feel more present. A display that turns toward a speaker may be easier to interact with than a fixed screen, particularly when users are moving around while preparing food, doing chores, or checking cameras.

The key question is whether that benefit justifies the added hardware. Motors, joints, gears, cables, sensors, and obstacle detection increase cost and create more potential failure points than a stationary display. Movement could also introduce noise, consume additional power, and require more tabletop space.

Do not confuse it with Apple’s rumored Home Hub

The robotic device appears to be part of a broader Apple smart-home roadmap, but current reporting suggests it is not the same product as the simpler device often called “HomePad,” “Home Hub,” or “HomePod with a screen.” Those names are unofficial descriptions rather than confirmed Apple branding.

Later reporting summarized by MacRumors describes a nearer-term stationary home hub with a roughly 7-inch display, a HomePod-like speaker, a camera, and tabletop or wall-mounted versions. Its software is reportedly based on tvOS, with elements resembling iOS and watchOS. The device may provide personalized content through user recognition and could arrive between October 2026 and early 2027.

The higher-end robotic product is reportedly more ambitious, remains in the prototype stage, and is targeted for 2027. Apple has not confirmed that these are definitively separate retail products, but treating every rumored Apple home device as one product creates a misleading picture of the roadmap.

The reported timeline

  • 2022: The robotic-tabletop project was reportedly approved or greenlit.
  • August 14, 2024: Reporting described the iPad-like display, robotic arm, motorized tilt, 360-degree movement, Apple Intelligence ambitions, and an approximate $1,000 internal target.
  • August 13, 2025: Later reporting placed the robotic product in 2027 and described a prototype with a smaller display and movable arm.
  • July 28, 2026: Reporting placed the simpler stationary home hub between October 2026 and early 2027.
  • As of August 18, 2026: Neither device had an official Apple announcement, final name, confirmed price, or retail listing in the reporting reviewed here.

The original “as soon as 2026” estimate should therefore be treated as an earlier target, not the current expected launch date.

Why Apple might want it

Apple has a strong presence in phones, tablets, computers, wearables, media, and voice-controlled speakers, but it has not established the same kind of dedicated smart-display category as Amazon and Google.

A home display could give Siri and Apple Intelligence a permanent household interface instead of relying on an iPhone, iPad, or HomePod. It could also deepen the value of Apple Home, HomeKit, Matter-compatible accessories, Apple Music, FaceTime, Apple TV, and personal services.

The robotic mechanism would give Apple a more distinctive premium product than a conventional screen attached to a speaker. Bloomberg reporting has associated the project with Kevin Lynch, who has worked on Apple Watch, health software, and the company’s car project. That leadership connection provides context, but it does not prove that the device is commercially viable or ready to ship.

Why Apple may hesitate

Price and iPad overlap

The reported target of around $1,000 was an early internal figure, not a confirmed retail price. At that level, buyers could reasonably compare the device with an iPad, laptop, or other Apple hardware. An iPad on a stand already handles recipes, calendars, photos, video calls, media, web access, and Home app control.

The dedicated device would need to offer meaningful advantages—such as always-on placement, automatic orientation, better speakers, and deeper home integration—to justify its premium.

Mechanical reliability

A moving arm introduces failure modes that do not exist with a stationary display. Cables or objects could obstruct it, and a tabletop location could limit its range. A claim of 360-degree rotation may apply to the display mechanism rather than unrestricted movement of the entire device.

  • 13-INCH ULTRA RETINA XDR DISPLAY — The world’s most advanced display, featuring extreme brightness, precise contrast, ProMotion, P3 wide color, and True Tone.* Nano-texture display glass available in 1TB and 2TB configurations

The device would need safeguards around children, pets, liquids, walls, and nearby objects. A software failure could leave the screen facing the wrong direction or stuck in an inconvenient position. Repairs could also be substantially more expensive than replacing a basic smart display.

Privacy and recognition

A camera and microphone that can observe a room raise obvious privacy questions. A camera that follows users may be unwelcome in bedrooms or private spaces. Voice or face recognition could personalize content for the wrong person, particularly when several people speak at once.

Siri dependency

The hardware’s appeal depends heavily on software. If Siri cannot reliably understand household requests, identify the right speaker, control a wide range of accessories, or provide useful proactive assistance, the robotic movement may feel like an expensive novelty. Reporting on the simpler home hub has already linked its timing to delays involving Apple’s redesigned Siri.

How it could compare with current alternatives

Option What it offers What it lacks
iPad with a stand Large screen, recipes, video calls, apps, web access, media, and Home control No automatic movement or dedicated always-on smart-speaker design
HomePod or HomePod mini Siri, Apple Music, intercom, and voice-based smart-home control No visual interface or moving display
Amazon Echo Show 10 A current rotating smart display with Alexa, video calls, media, and home control Designed around Amazon’s ecosystem rather than Apple’s
Echo Show family Multiple screen sizes for recipes, cameras, music, calls, and routines No Apple-first integration
Google Nest Hub products Household information, routines, media, and connected-home control Designed around Google’s ecosystem

For an Apple household wanting a screen today, an iPad and stable stand are the most direct practical alternative. For voice-first control, a HomePod or HomePod mini is simpler. The Echo Show 10 is the closest existing comparison for a display that turns toward people.

Who should wait—and who should not

Waiting may make sense if you specifically want an Apple-branded, dedicated home display with FaceTime, Apple Home integration, and a more intelligent Siri experience. The robotic mechanism could be valuable if your household frequently moves between areas of a kitchen or living room and wants a screen that remains visible.

Waiting is less sensible if you need a product now, already own an iPad, prefer a large screen, value easy repair, or use Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or another non-Apple ecosystem. The robotic product is reportedly aimed at 2027, remains unconfirmed, and could be expensive if the early $1,000 target proves meaningful.

What remains unknown

  • The final product name and whether it will be marketed as a Home Hub, HomePod-related device, or something else.
  • Whether the robotic version will ship at all.
  • The final display size, chip, camera, speakers, sensors, and operating system.
  • How much the arm can move and whether it can safely track users.
  • Whether the device will support broad Matter and HomeKit accessories.
  • Its retail price, repair policy, software-support period, and launch markets.
  • Whether Apple Intelligence features will be available at launch.

The safest conclusion is that Apple’s rotating tabletop device is a credible reported project, not a product buyers can preorder. Readers should not delay a current smart-home purchase solely on the assumption that the robotic version is imminent.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
