Apple’s Reported Face ID Smart Doorbell: What the Rumor Actually Says in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple is reportedly exploring a smart-home doorbell paired with a compatible smart lock that could recognize authorized residents and unlock the door. It is not an announced or available Apple product. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first reported the project in December 2024, with 2026 described as the earliest possible timing; as of August 16, 2026, Apple has published no product page, price, release date, or confirmed specifications.

What Apple is reportedly building

Coverage of Gurman’s Bloomberg report describes a first-party Apple doorbell and lock system rather than an ordinary camera. The doorbell could use advanced facial recognition to identify residents, then connect wirelessly to a compatible smart deadbolt. Apple might support an existing HomeKit-compatible lock or work with one manufacturer on a bundled system. The project was reportedly in an early development stage.

Those are reported plans, not final specifications. The original report does not establish a product name, industrial design, lock partners, price, power requirements, or whether Apple will sell both devices together. See the original report as relayed by 9to5Mac and the additional reporting from MacRumors.

How the Face ID-style entry might work

The reported concept would have four stages:

  1. A person approaches or presses the doorbell.
  2. The camera captures the person’s face and compares it with enrolled household members.
  3. The system decides whether the match is authorized for entry.
  4. A compatible deadbolt could unlock, with the event potentially appearing in Apple Home.

“Face ID” is shorthand used in coverage. Apple has not said that the doorbell would use the iPhone’s TrueDepth hardware, Secure Enclave architecture, or the Face ID brand. The reporting supports “Face ID-like facial recognition,” not a confirmed implementation.

Questions Apple would have to answer

  • Would unlocking require a press, gesture, voice command, or explicit confirmation?
  • Would an iPhone, Apple Watch, or nearby home hub be required?
  • Could a photograph or video spoof recognition, and what anti-spoofing protection would be used?
  • How would the system handle masks, helmets, sunglasses, rain gear, backlighting, or several people at once?
  • Could recognition be disabled while video-doorbell functions remain active?
  • Could residents create separate permissions for children, guests, cleaners, or temporary visitors?
  • What happens during a power, Wi-Fi, battery, or cloud-service outage?
  • Would a keypad, physical key, or mechanical override remain available for emergencies?

None of those operational or security details has been confirmed. A camera’s ability to recognize a familiar face is not automatically equivalent to authorization to open a home.

Existing HomeKit Face Recognition is different

Apple already offers Face Recognition in the Home app for compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras and doorbells. It can identify familiar visitors and send notifications; it does not, by itself, prove that Apple controls a physical lock. Apple documents the current feature at support.apple.com.

Current Home feature Reported Apple doorbell concept
Works with compatible third-party cameras and doorbells Would reportedly use Apple-designed doorbell hardware
Identifies familiar people in recorded or live video Could authenticate residents for physical entry
Primarily provides video and notifications Could be connected to a smart deadbolt
Does not itself unlock a door Would need a separate, highly secure authorization system

HomeKit Secure Video currently supports video streaming, recording, activity alerts, and familiar-person recognition on compatible accessories. Apple’s documentation confirms the platform, not the rumored hardware. It does not confirm the rumored doorbell’s resolution, field of view, night vision, storage method, processing location, subscription requirements, or launch support.

When could it launch?

The timeline remains uncertain:

  • December 22, 2024: the first report described the doorbell and lock as an early-stage project.
  • 2026 at the earliest: subsequent coverage repeated that as the earliest reported window, not a promised release date.
  • August 16, 2026: no official Apple announcement, product page, preorder, price, or availability had been established in the available reporting.

MacRumors’ 2026 product roundup and a later 9to5Mac report still treated it as rumored or planned. “2026” therefore means no more than the earliest window attributed to the report; the product could arrive later, change substantially, or be canceled.

What remains unknown

  • Official name, design, price, regions, and release date.
  • Wired, battery, or hybrid power, and whether existing doorbell wiring would be sufficient.
  • Compatible lock models and whether Apple would sell a lock, certify third-party locks, or offer a partner bundle.
  • Video resolution, frame rate, HDR, night vision, viewing angle, and continuous-recording capability.
  • Whether entry authentication would run locally, through an Apple device, or in the cloud.
  • Whether iCloud+ storage or another subscription would be required, and how many recording days would be included.
  • Whether HomeKit Secure Video would be supported at launch.
  • How access logs, biometric data, guest permissions, revocation, stolen hardware, and account recovery would work.

Why the lock matters as much as the camera

This is a home-entry system, not merely a doorbell with a recognition feature. The lock must remain dependable when batteries are depleted, the internet is unavailable, a motor jams, a device is stolen, or emergency responders need access. Buyers would also need to consider mechanical override, local building rules, landlord permission, unusual deadbolt geometry, and whether a home hub is required for remote control or automations.

Facial data is sensitive even when processing occurs locally. A future Apple product would still need to address consent from guests and passersby, false matches, compromised accounts, and the consequences of an unauthorized unlock. Apple’s privacy reputation is not evidence that this unannounced system has solved those problems.

How it could differ from Ring and Nest

The potential Apple advantage is integration: native control from iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and the Home app, plus automations for lights, alarms, speakers, and other Home accessories. A single resident-recognition-to-lock workflow could also appeal to households already invested in Apple devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are possible disadvantages. Apple has not demonstrated a first-party doorbell platform, may support fewer locks than larger ecosystems, could restrict features to newer devices or software, and might charge a premium. Facial unlocking itself introduces safety and privacy risks. The evidence supports a possible competitive angle, not a conclusion that Apple would outperform Ring or Nest.

Related Apple smart-home rumors

Reports place the doorbell within a broader Apple home initiative that may include a display-equipped hub, indoor security products, and sensors. A March 2026 report described project J450 as a possible small home-security sensor or camera combining HomeKit camera functions with sensing and automation; read the account at MacRumors. That report does not confirm that the doorbell, sensor, hub, and camera are one product or will launch together.

Should you wait or buy an existing doorbell?

Wait for Apple if

  • First-party Apple integration is more important than having a product now.
  • You can tolerate an unconfirmed timetable and the possibility of cancellation or changed features.
  • You want to see Apple’s final lock, privacy, and authentication model before committing to hardware.

Buy now if

  • You need a working doorbell or lock immediately.
  • Your installation, wiring, building rules, or lock geometry are already known.
  • You are willing to choose among current ecosystems instead of waiting for a rumor.

Logitech Circle View Wired Doorbell

Apple’s HomeKit accessory listings include the Logitech Circle View Wired Doorbell. Apple procurement documentation lists a historical consumer MSRP of $199.95; that figure does not establish current stock or checkout pricing. Check the Apple HomeKit accessories page before recommending or purchasing it. It is a wired option, so compatible doorbell power and installation are essential.

Google Nest Doorbell (wired, third generation)

Google’s store lists the wired Nest Doorbell (third generation) with 2K video. A page observed August 16, 2026 showed prices from $139.99 to $179.99, depending on promotion. Google Home Premium plans were listed from $10 per month or $100 per year for additional features. See Google’s product page. It is a stronger fit for Google Home households, not readers specifically seeking Apple Home integration.

Bottom line

Apple appears to be exploring a first-party doorbell and smart-lock ecosystem in which advanced facial recognition could identify residents and potentially unlock a door. The project remains unconfirmed as of August 16, 2026. The most important promise—secure, reliable biometric authorization—is also the least established. If you need hardware now, the Aqara G410, an Aqara U100 combination, or a verified HomeKit-compatible alternative is available; wait for Apple only if first-party integration outweighs the uncertainty.
