It is the ELEGNT research prototype, published by Apple Machine Learning Research on January 24, 2025. But it matters because it shows Apple exploring a more expressive kind of home technology—devices that can turn, gesture, look toward people, and communicate status through movement.
That could become important as Apple reportedly prepares a broader Home push involving a smart-home hub, refreshed HomePods, a new Apple TV, a security camera, and a longer-term tabletop robot. None of those rumored products is confirmed, and the lamp does not prove that Apple is making a robotic HomePod. It does suggest that Apple may want future home hardware to feel more present, understandable, and socially intelligent.
The lamp is research, not a product announcement
Apple researchers built and studied the lamp-like robot as part of a project called ELEGNT, short for “Expressive and Functional Movement Design for Non-Anthropomorphic Robot.”
The prototype investigates how a machine can communicate attention, intention, and apparent emotion without having a human face or humanoid body. Its lamp-like form can perform practical movements, but it can also use posture, gestures, and gaze-like orientation to make interactions more legible.

That distinction is essential. The research does not establish:
- a consumer product called Apple Lamp or ELEGNT;
- HomeKit or Apple Home compatibility;
- a release date, price, operating system, or retail availability;
- that Apple is definitely building a robotic HomePod; or
- that the prototype and a rumored future tabletop robot are the same project.
The accurate description is simple: Apple researchers built and studied a lamp-like robot prototype.
Apple’s study compared expressive and function-driven movement across six task scenarios. The research reported greater engagement with expressive movement, particularly in social-oriented tasks, along with improved perceptions of the robot. That is evidence for an interaction-design hypothesis—not proof that consumers broadly want animated devices in their homes.
Why movement could make Home devices better
Most smart-home products communicate through audio, screens, lights, or phone notifications. Those channels work, but they can be ambiguous. A speaker may respond verbally without making clear whether it heard the right person. A screen may show a small status icon that nobody notices. A notification can arrive after the relevant moment has passed.

Visual acknowledgment
A device could turn or tilt when it recognizes a request, helping a user understand that the system is listening. It might orient toward the person asking for a timer, reminder, or automation rather than responding from a fixed direction.
Directional attention
A swiveling display or speaker could face the person using it. That might improve:
- video-call framing;
- voice pickup;
- recipe and cooking instructions;
- timers and calendar reminders;
- intercom conversations; and
- accessibility-oriented interactions.
In a multi-person household, a device that can orient itself toward the current speaker could feel more useful than a screen permanently pointed at one wall.

Nonverbal status signals
Simple, restrained movement could indicate that a device is listening, processing, unavailable, in a privacy mode, or finished running an automation. It might acknowledge that a door was locked, a light scene completed, or a security alert needs attention without requiring a loud announcement.
Movement should supplement—not replace—text, audio, visual indicators, and haptics. A person should not need to watch a device constantly to know whether something important happened.
Presence without pretending to be human
ELEGNT is especially interesting because it explores a non-anthropomorphic robot. Apple does not need to build a humanoid assistant with a face and simulated personality. A device could feel responsive through a few readable motions while remaining visibly a piece of hardware.
That approach could avoid some of the awkwardness of assistants that try too hard to appear human. A slight turn toward a speaker may be useful. Constantly dancing, emoting, or interrupting would quickly become distracting.
How the lamp connects to Apple’s rumored Home strategy
Apple already has the software and accessory foundation for a broader home strategy. The Apple Home app supports automations, Siri control, cameras, locks, thermostats, lights, shades, and robot vacuums. Apple’s developer documentation also describes support for HomeKit and Matter accessories, including Matter support in Apple’s ecosystem from iOS 16.1 and later.
HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV can serve as Apple Home hubs. Apple says home data is designed to remain private, with accessory control handled by Apple devices and encrypted communication. The company’s Apple Home developer platform and Matter documentation provide the framework for third-party accessories.
Against that existing foundation, reports point to a more ambitious hardware lineup. These are reports, not Apple announcements.
| Reported product | Reported purpose or features | Reported timing | Confidence and official status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home hub or command center | Approximately 7-inch display; possible wall-mounted and tabletop versions; tabletop speaker base; camera reportedly intended for video calls, facial recognition, and presence detection; Home, Safari, Calendar, Photos, weather, notes, and Siri-related functions. | 2026 is reported, but no guaranteed launch date exists. | Rumored. Apple has not confirmed the name, price, display size, camera, or final design. |
| HomePod and HomePod mini updates | Reports mention faster chips, possible newer Siri support, potential sound improvements, an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip in some reports, and new HomePod mini colors. | Reported as part of a 2026 Home push. | Rumored. | Apple TV 4K | Similar external form factor, newer chip, more memory, and possible support for newer Siri or Apple Intelligence features. New wireless capabilities have also been reported. | Reported as a possible 2026 update. | Rumored. Apple has not confirmed these specifications. |
| Apple security camera | Potential Apple Home integration, HomeKit Secure Video support, AI-generated summaries or event interpretation, presence detection, and broader automation. | Timing is uncertain. | Rumored. Apple’s Home software supports compatible cameras, but that does not confirm a specific Apple-branded camera. |
| Longer-term tabletop robot | Reports describe a display, speakers, a robotic arm or swiveling mechanism, AI-centered interaction, and a stronger social presence. | Possibly 2027 or later. | Especially uncertain. It should not be treated as the same device as ELEGNT or as the nearer-term home hub. |

The key dependency is Siri, not robotics
A moving device will not be useful if it misunderstands people, responds slowly, or cannot reliably control the home. Expressive movement can make an interaction clearer, but it cannot rescue weak underlying software.
Apple announced its next-generation Siri and Apple Intelligence software on June 8, 2026, providing official context for the company’s AI ambitions. That announcement does not confirm any particular home product or prove that rumored hardware will support every announced capability.
For a future home hub or tabletop device to justify its cost, Siri would need to handle context well. A useful home assistant should understand follow-up requests, distinguish household members appropriately, work across accessories, and communicate when it cannot complete an action. A device that visibly “thinks” for several seconds before failing could feel worse than a simple speaker with a fast, limited response.
What would make a robotic Apple Home product compelling?
1. Reliable everyday interaction
The device must make ordinary tasks easier: controlling lights, checking a timer, starting a scene, answering a question, showing a calendar, or joining a call. Personality should be an enhancement, not the main feature.
2. Useful positioning
A moving base should improve viewing angles, camera framing, voice pickup, or attention—not merely perform decorative movements. A robotic mechanism that only turns toward users may be amusing at first but difficult to justify at a premium price.
3. Quiet operation
Motors introduce noise and mechanical wear. A device intended for bedrooms, offices, and nighttime use would need to move quietly enough not to disturb sleep, concentration, conversations, or media playback.
4. Strong privacy controls
A camera-equipped home device needs obvious camera indicators, a physical shutter or equivalent control where practical, clear household permissions, and local processing where possible. Users should be able to understand when presence detection or recognition is active.
Personalization is not automatically an advantage. A camera may tailor information to household members, but it also increases the privacy cost of placing an always-present computer in a shared room.

5. Real interoperability
Apple Home should remain useful with products from multiple vendors. Matter support is important, but Matter does not guarantee that every accessory exposes every feature through Apple Home. Compatibility depends on the accessory, platform, software version, and implementation.
A Matter or Apple Home-compatible product may still require the manufacturer’s app for setup, firmware updates, subscriptions, or advanced features. Buyers should not assume that certification makes every device equally capable inside Apple’s app.
6. Graceful multi-user behavior
Homes include visitors, children, roommates, pets, and people who may be misidentified. A future device should handle uncertain identity safely, avoid exposing private information to the wrong person, and allow household-level permission controls.
7. Long-term software support
A smart display or robot becomes a poor purchase if its most important capabilities depend on cloud services that are later abandoned. Apple would need to support the hardware for years, including security updates and meaningful Home functionality even if AI services change.

8. A price that makes sense
Buyers will compare a rumored command center with an iPhone, iPad, HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV—not just with other smart displays. A stationary screen must offer a clear advantage over devices many Apple households already own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why skepticism is still justified
The most obvious reason is that ELEGNT is a prototype. Research projects often demonstrate a promising interaction idea without becoming products. The lamp may influence Apple’s design thinking and never appear in a living room.
The product reports are also uneven in certainty. A rumored home hub may ship without robotics. A reported swiveling base could belong to a high-end version, a different product, or a design that is delayed or canceled. Reports describing a speaker base and reports describing a robotic base may not refer to the same hardware.
Names such as “HomePad,” “HomeHub,” “HomePod Touch,” and “Command Center” are informal or rumored labels, not confirmed Apple branding. The rumored price of around $350 is likewise unconfirmed and should not be treated as a retail price.

- Make routines colorful - Create lighting cues for chore and task reminders or set a color-changing countdown timer.
- The perfect bedside lamp - Use Echo Glow as a sunrise alarm and gradually get brighter to wake you up in the morning or fade off in the evening to wind you down for bedtime.
- Mood light - With million colors to choose from, create ambient lighting to fit any mood.
- Dynamic modes - Set special modes and routines to create special light shows and lighting that reacts to music and sound.
There is also a basic usability question: how often does someone need a new stationary screen when an iPhone or iPad is already nearby? The answer depends on whether Apple’s device offers substantially better voice interaction, household awareness, camera features, home control, or glanceable information.
Camera features may vary by region, software version, privacy settings, and household configuration. New AI capabilities may require newer hardware or a particular home hub. Even an official launch would not guarantee that every reported feature arrives at release.
What this means for Apple Home buyers now
Do not buy the ELEGNT lamp; there is no public buying page or consumer version. Also do not buy current hardware solely on the assumption that a rumored robotic product will arrive on a specific date.
Buy now if you need a home hub, speaker, or streaming box today. Apple’s current ecosystem already supports Matter and HomeKit accessories, and readers can begin with a HomePod mini, HomePod, or Apple TV 4K depending on whether they prioritize low cost, audio quality, or television integration. Current prices should be checked on the relevant Apple HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV 4K pages.

Wait if your main reason for upgrading is a display, indoor camera, swiveling base, or robotic interaction. Those features are precisely the parts that remain unconfirmed.
For accessories, Apple’s compatible-accessories directory is a better starting point than waiting for Apple-branded lights, locks, thermostats, cameras, or sensors. Choose products carefully: verify the exact Matter feature support, whether a manufacturer app is required, and how the device handles local control and privacy.
The real significance of the cute lamp
The most interesting interpretation is not that Apple is definitely making a dancing lamp. It is that Apple researchers are considering physical expression as part of the user interface.
That matters for a company trying to make the home more intelligent. A future device might orient itself toward a speaker during a call, tilt toward someone asking for help, give a subtle acknowledgment when an automation finishes, or use restrained motion to show that privacy mode is active. Those behaviors could make an always-present computer easier to understand without forcing it to act like a person.
But the consumer test will be much harder than the research demonstration. Apple would need to combine expressive design with accurate Siri interaction, useful home controls, quiet mechanics, strong privacy, multi-user support, broad interoperability, and years of software support.
ELEGNT is exciting because it hints at a more human-centered Apple Home—not because it confirms a robotic lamp. The eventual success of Apple’s reported Home strategy will depend on whether movement and AI solve real household problems rather than merely making a device look alive.
