The APA Engineered Wood Construction Guide, Form E30, is APA – The Engineered Wood Association’s broad reference for designing and building with engineered-wood products. It brings product selection, specification, structural systems, fire-rated assemblies, and finishing into one professional guide for architects, engineers, designers, builders, and building officials. APA provides the electronic guide as a free download; a printed edition is sold through APA’s official shop.

The publication has a long history rather than one single, permanently fixed edition. APA identifies 1962 as its first publication year. Building Design + Construction (BDC) reported an updated release in March 2016 and another update in January 2020. APA’s current page carries its own revision metadata—December 2, 2019 as the last-revised date, a December 2016 revision label on the downloadable guide, and 2023 errata—so users should check the document’s revision and errata information before relying on a detail for a project.

What is the APA Engineered Wood Construction Guide?

Form E30 is a design-and-construction reference for structural products made by combining wood strands, veneers, lumber, or other wood fiber with moisture-resistant adhesives. It is not limited to one product or one building system. The guide connects individual engineered-wood materials with the floors, walls, roofs, diaphragms, shear walls, and fire-rated assemblies in which they are used.

That breadth is its main value. A project team can use the guide to move from a material question—such as whether a wood structural panel, glulam, cross-laminated timber, I-joist, structural composite lumber, or rim board is appropriate—to an assembly question involving load paths, detailing, fire performance, energy conservation, or finishing. Form E30 is written as a professional reference, not as a substitute for project-specific engineering, adopted building codes, manufacturer literature, or the authority having jurisdiction.

BDC characterized the guide in its January 28, 2020 report as an authoritative document for building engineered-wood floors, walls, and roofs, quoting an APA news release. That description reflects the guide’s scope, while the responsible designer still has to verify the edition, applicable code, product qualification, and project conditions.

Material or product family What the guide helps you investigate
Wood structural panels: plywood and oriented strand board Panel selection and specification, and their use in floor, wall, roof, diaphragm, shear-wall, and fire-system assemblies.
Glued-laminated timber (glulam) Engineered wood members used in structural framing and related system design.
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) Mass-timber panel construction and its relationship to structural and fire-system design.
I-joists Engineered framing members used in floor and roof systems, with guidance on selecting and specifying the system.
Structural composite lumber (SCL) Engineered lumber products used as structural members and in assemblies requiring specified performance.
APA Performance Rated Rim Board Rim-board selection and use at floor-system and wall interfaces.

At the assembly level, Form E30 addresses:

  • floor construction;
  • wall construction;
  • roof construction;
  • diaphragms that transfer lateral forces;
  • shear walls that resist those forces;
  • fire-rated systems;
  • heavy-timber systems;
  • wind-rated systems;
  • energy-conservation considerations; and
  • finishing methods.

The guide also includes typical specifications, illustrations, and design recommendations. BDC’s January 2020 account described that release as 100 pages.

Publication history: why the 2016 and 2020 dates are both correct

Search results often combine several dates for Form E30. They refer to different events, not necessarily contradictory editions.

Date or label What it means How to use it
1962 APA identifies this as the guide’s first publication year. It establishes the guide’s historical origin, not the revision currently governing a project.
March 23, 2016 BDC reported that APA had released an updated Engineered Wood Construction Guide. This is the date of BDC’s report about a 2016 update.
December 2016 The downloadable guide displayed by APA carries a December 2016 revision label. Check the PDF itself for this revision marking and any later corrections.
December 2, 2019 APA’s current page metadata identifies this as the last-revised date. Treat it as page-level publication metadata, not proof that every page has the same revision history.
January 16, 2020 APA announced that the updated Form E30 was available on its website. This is the official announcement date for the later update.
January 28, 2020 BDC reported on the 2020 update and described it as a 100-page document. This is BDC’s publication date, two years after its 2016 report.
2023 errata APA’s downloadable-guide page displays errata dated 2023. Review the errata with the PDF before citing a table, detail, or recommendation.

Because APA’s page shows both a December 2016 revision label and 2023 errata, do not describe the file simply as “the 2016 guide” or “the 2020 guide” without checking the document and page metadata you received. On a permit set or specification, record the exact Form E30 revision and the errata status used by the design team.

How to use the APA engineered wood guide on a project

Form E30 is most useful when treated as a controlled reference during design and specification rather than read once from beginning to end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the document version. Download the current electronic guide from APA’s official website. Note the revision marking inside the PDF, the date shown on APA’s page, and any posted errata. Save that exact file with the project’s reference documents.
  2. Define the design question. Decide whether you are selecting a material, detailing an assembly, checking a lateral system, addressing fire performance, or preparing a specification. This determines where to start.
  3. Identify the material family. Use the product sections for plywood, oriented strand board, glulam, CLT, I-joists, SCL, or APA Performance Rated Rim Board. Keep the product category separate from a particular manufacturer’s product designation.
  4. Move from product to assembly. Read the applicable floor, wall, roof, diaphragm, shear-wall, fire, heavy-timber, or wind-rated section. The same product can perform differently when its support, connections, layers, or protective finishes change.
  5. Extract specification language. Use the guide’s typical specifications as a starting point, then coordinate them with the project’s drawings, schedules, governing code, and approved product data. Do not paste a generic specification into a set without checking its applicability.
  6. Check performance concerns together. Review structural design, fire resistance, energy conservation, finishing, and any acoustic or other project requirements as coordinated issues. A structurally adequate detail may still require a different protection or finish to satisfy the project.
  7. Document decisions and assumptions. Record the selected product class, assembly, required ratings, design responsibility, and the E30 revision or errata consulted. This makes later review easier when a product substitution or code comment occurs.
  8. Obtain professional approval. The project architect or engineer must verify calculations, connections, loads, fire-rated construction, and code compliance for the actual building and jurisdiction. Building officials can require documentation beyond a general reference guide.

Material selection: what each E30 category is for

Wood structural panels

Plywood and oriented strand board are the guide’s principal panel categories. Form E30 addresses panel selection and specification and shows how panels participate in floors, walls, roofs, diaphragms, shear walls, and fire systems. Selection should therefore begin with the assembly and required performance, not with the panel name alone. The designer needs to coordinate panel type, grade or rating, thickness, orientation, support, fastening, openings, and protection with the project’s structural design and code requirements; the specific allowable values or schedules must come from the applicable E30 material information and project calculations.

Glued-laminated timber

Glulam combines wood laminations into structural members. In E30, it appears as part of the engineered-wood family and as a component of structural framing systems. Review its role in the load path, bearing and connection conditions, fire strategy, and finish requirements rather than treating it as an interchangeable solid-sawn beam.

Cross-laminated timber

CLT uses layers of wood arranged in alternating directions to form large structural panels. The guide places CLT within a broader system discussion that includes floors, walls, roofs, heavy-timber construction, and fire-rated design. Project teams should confirm the panel configuration, connection design, protection, and code path for the specific building; E30’s presence in a category does not remove the need for project engineering.

I-joists

I-joists are engineered framing members commonly considered in floor and roof construction. Form E30 helps organize selection and specification, but an I-joist schedule still has to match span, loading, bearing, holes, blocking, bracing, and the manufacturer or approved design source for the selected product. Coordinate the joist system with rim-board details and the diaphragm or sheathing design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Structural composite lumber

SCL is a family of engineered lumber products used where structural members require controlled properties. Use E30 to locate the relevant design and specification discussion, then verify the particular product’s recognized properties, dimensions, connections, and exposure conditions in the project documentation.

APA Performance Rated Rim Board

Rim board sits at a critical interface between floor framing and the wall above or below. E30’s rim-board coverage is useful for coordinating load transfer, panel or joist support, fastening, and continuity at that interface. Treat the rim board as a designed component, not merely as closure material.

Assembly guidance: floors, walls, roofs, and lateral systems

Floors

Use the floor sections to coordinate framing members, panels, rim boards, supports, connections, and finishing. The design question is not only whether a member spans a distance; it also includes diaphragm behavior, openings, vibration or serviceability requirements, fire protection, and the transition to walls and stairs. E30 illustrations and typical specifications can help the team communicate a complete assembly, while the engineer confirms project loads and details.

Walls

Wall construction can combine studs or engineered members, structural panels, sheathing, hold-downs, finishes, and fire or energy layers. Read the wall guidance alongside the shear-wall and fire-system sections when the wall resists lateral loads or forms a rated separation. Coordinate openings, penetrations, joints, and connections rather than selecting a wall detail from one concern in isolation.

Roofs

Roof guidance covers the interaction of framing, structural panels, diaphragms, weather protection, and finishing. The roof must be checked for gravity and wind effects, openings, edge conditions, and continuity into the walls. E30 can organize the specification and typical details; the project design establishes the actual loads, spans, fasteners, and supports.

Diaphragms

Diaphragms transfer lateral forces to the vertical resisting elements. Form E30’s diaphragm material is intended to help designers select and detail panels, supports, joints, and fastening patterns as one load-transfer system. Keep diaphragm boundaries, collectors, chords, openings, and connections coordinated with the building’s lateral analysis.

Shear walls

Shear-wall design depends on the wall’s sheathing, framing, anchorage, hold-downs, openings, and connection details. Use the E30 shear-wall information with the project’s wind or seismic design and the adopted code. A wall that looks similar graphically may have a different capacity when its fasteners, boundary members, or anchorage change.

Fire-rated and heavy-timber systems

E30 includes fire systems and heavy-timber systems, allowing structural and protection decisions to be considered together. Verify the exact tested or recognized assembly, required rating, protection layers, joints, penetrations, and inspection requirements for the jurisdiction. Do not infer a fire rating solely from the presence of a wood product or from a generic illustration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wind-rated systems

Wind-rated construction requires continuity from cladding and sheathing through diaphragms, collectors, shear walls, and foundations. E30’s wind-system coverage can help structure that review, but the project engineer must apply the site’s wind criteria, exposure, pressure coefficients, openings, and connection demands.

Design and performance concerns beyond structure

Energy conservation

The guide includes energy-conservation considerations. Use that material to coordinate engineered-wood framing with insulation, air control, moisture management, thermal bridges, and the energy provisions adopted for the project. E30 is a construction reference; it does not establish the energy code for every jurisdiction.

Finishing methods

Finishing guidance matters because coatings, coverings, exposed wood, and protection layers affect durability, appearance, and sometimes fire or moisture performance. Confirm substrate preparation, exposure, compatibility, and maintenance requirements for the selected finish and assembly.

Fire, acoustics, and other enclosure requirements

Fire-system information is expressly included in Form E30. Form E30 also distinguishes the separate APA Engineered Wood Handbook, which covers engineered-wood design, connections, fire/noise systems, finishes, and emerging technologies. The handbook is a different, book-length reference; it should not be presented as another edition of Form E30. For any acoustic or specialty requirement, use the project’s tested assemblies and governing criteria rather than assuming that a general E30 detail supplies a rating.

What changed in the updated engineered wood construction guide?

The documented changes are best understood as successive updates to a long-running reference. BDC’s March 23, 2016 article covered one APA update. APA then announced an updated Form E30 on January 16, 2020, and BDC described that release on January 28, 2020 as a 100-page guide with illustrations, typical specifications, and design recommendations for floor, wall, and roof systems, diaphragms, shear walls, fire-rated systems, and finishing methods.

The available publication record does not establish that every page in the file shown today was rewritten in one single 2020 operation. APA’s page metadata says “last revised” December 2, 2019, labels the downloadable guide as a December 2016 revision, and displays 2023 errata. Those labels should be preserved in project records. When a detail or requirement matters, compare the exact PDF revision and errata rather than relying on the year in a search result or a secondary article.

Where can I download the APA engineered wood guide?

APA states that the electronic Form E30 guide can be downloaded free from its official website. Use APA’s current document page, download the PDF, and retain the file with its revision information and any associated errata. Because pages and files can be replaced, record the access date and the document markings in your project’s specifications or design notes.

Is the APA E30 guide free?

Yes. APA identifies the electronic guide as a free download. “Free” applies to access to the electronic publication; it does not eliminate the cost of design services, engineering, code review, printing, or project-specific product documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I buy a printed APA E30 guide?

Yes. APA’s official shop lists APA Engineered Wood Construction Guide (Printed Publication), SKU FORM-E30, at $50 when checked. The exact product phrase for a physical-publication search is APA Engineered Wood Construction Guide E30. Price and availability can change, so confirm the current listing before ordering. A printed copy is useful for office or field reference, but a project team should still verify whether the electronic page has newer errata or revision information.

Common mistakes when relying on Form E30

  • Using the year without checking the file. The 2016 BDC report, 2020 BDC report, APA revision metadata, and 2023 errata describe different points in the publication history.
  • Treating a general detail as a project design. Illustrations and typical specifications require coordination with actual loads, dimensions, supports, connections, openings, and code requirements.
  • Choosing a product before choosing the assembly. Panels, I-joists, SCL, glulam, CLT, and rim board have different roles and cannot be selected solely by product category.
  • Ignoring interfaces. Floors, walls, roofs, diaphragms, shear walls, rim boards, fire layers, and finishes meet at joints where continuity and fastening often control performance.
  • Assuming a fire rating transfers automatically. Confirm the exact rated assembly, protection, penetrations, joints, and approval path.
  • Confusing Form E30 with the APA Engineered Wood Handbook. They are separate publications with different scopes.
  • Leaving the reference uncontrolled. Save the PDF, revision label, errata, and access date so reviewers know exactly which information informed the design.

A practical decision framework for project teams

For a new engineered-wood project, ask these questions in order:

  1. What structural role must be filled: panel sheathing, beam, mass-timber panel, joist, composite-lumber member, or rim board?
  2. Which building assembly contains it: floor, wall, roof, diaphragm, shear wall, fire system, heavy-timber system, or wind-rated system?
  3. What performance governs: gravity, lateral load, fire, energy, durability, finish, or a combination?
  4. Which E30 illustration, specification section, or recommendation addresses that combination?
  5. What project-specific calculations, tested assemblies, product data, and code provisions must supplement it?
  6. Which Form E30 revision and errata will be cited in the drawings and specifications?

This sequence keeps the guide in its proper role: a broad, organized source for engineered-wood design and construction decisions, paired with the project’s licensed design, product approvals, and adopted code.
