It does not carry sound: HDMI ARC or eARC does that. For Samsung’s documented HDMI soundbar setup, turn on Anynet+ on the TV, connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port, then select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output.
What Anynet+ does—and what it does not do
Anynet+ is Samsung’s label for HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI-CEC). It works over HDMI and lets compatible devices exchange control commands. Depending on the TV, soundbar, and connected equipment, this can enable the TV remote to control soundbar volume, coordinate power, detect devices, or switch inputs. Samsung labels the TV setting “Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).” Samsung’s Anynet+ support page and the HDMI specification overview describe the feature.

- Anynet+ / CEC: device control and communication over HDMI.
- ARC or eARC: carries audio from the TV back to a soundbar or receiver.
- Dolby Atmos, DTS, and other formats: audio formats whose availability depends on the TV, soundbar, source, app, and settings.
Anynet+ is not an audio format, a wireless connection, or a sound-enhancement mode. It is also not the same as Q-Symphony, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. HDMI-CEC is an industry feature, but manufacturers do not implement every behavior identically; cross-brand power and input behavior can be less predictable than basic audio.
Anynet+ vs. ARC, eARC, optical, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi
| Feature | Main job | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| Anynet+ / HDMI-CEC | Device discovery and control, such as volume, power, and input coordination | HDMI |
| ARC | Returns TV audio to a soundbar or receiver | HDMI ARC ports |
| eARC | Enhanced audio return with greater bandwidth for supported higher-quality formats | HDMI eARC ports and compatible equipment |
| Optical | Digital audio connection | Optical cable |
| Bluetooth | Wireless audio connection | Bluetooth pairing |
| Wi-Fi | Network audio and smart features on supported models | Wi-Fi network |
In a typical TV-app setup, the signal path is TV app → TV audio processing → HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar. Anynet+ is the separate control-and-communication layer. HDMI.org describes eARC as the enhanced audio return channel; its capabilities do not guarantee a particular format will work through every device in the chain. Samsung’s eARC guidance says to enable Anynet+ and generally set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto.

Check compatibility before changing settings
- Confirm that the TV and soundbar each have an HDMI port marked ARC or eARC. The TV’s control is usually called Anynet+; the soundbar may support CEC without offering a separate setting with that name.
- Check the soundbar manual for its TV connection port, commonly labeled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). HDMI IN ports on the soundbar are generally for external sources such as a console or streaming box.
- Verify the exact TV and soundbar models if you need eARC or a specific audio format. Capability depends on both devices and the source. Samsung’s cited compatibility guidance notes DTS limitations for the TV models it covers; do not assume that every Samsung TV supports DTS:X or DTS-HD Master Audio.
- If connecting a console or player through the soundbar, confirm that the soundbar supports the source’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, and gaming features. HDMI pass-through varies by model. Samsung’s soundbar connection guidance calls out these model-specific input limitations.
Connect a Samsung soundbar over ARC
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Connect the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port. Do not use an ordinary soundbar HDMI IN port for the TV return-audio connection.
- Turn on both devices. On the Samsung TV, find Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and switch it on. A commonly documented route is Home → Settings → All Settings → Connection or General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). The exact grouping and wording vary by model, software, year, and region; use Settings search for “Anynet+” or “External Device Manager” if the route differs.
- In the TV’s Sound Output menu, select the HDMI-connected soundbar. The label may say the soundbar name, HDMI receiver, TV ARC, or similar.
- If needed, select D.IN as the soundbar source and allow it to detect the TV. The display should change to TV ARC when ARC audio is established. Samsung’s no-sound connection steps cover the port check, Anynet+, sound output, and D.IN-to-ARC confirmation.
- Play audio from a built-in TV app. Adjust volume with the TV remote, then test power behavior separately.
Set up eARC and choose audio settings
Use eARC only when both the TV and soundbar support it. Connect their eARC-marked ports, enable Anynet+, and open the TV’s audio settings. On many Samsung models, the route is Settings → All Settings → Audio or Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI eARC Mode; set the mode to Auto if available. Menu names vary, so search settings for “eARC” if necessary.
- Sound Output: choose the connected soundbar, rather than TV Speaker or optical output.
- Digital Output Audio Format: Auto is a sensible starting point. Pass-Through can be appropriate when the full chain supports it, but it is not a universal fix; try Auto or PCM if audio fails.
- Dolby Atmos: enable it only when the TV, soundbar, source, app, and audio track support the format. If Atmos is missing, test a known compatible source and check each device’s settings rather than assuming Anynet+ is responsible.
Samsung’s eARC page lists selected 2020–2023 products; that list is not a complete compatibility catalogue for newer models. Check the specifications for the exact model numbers. HDMI.org’s eARC capability description is not a promise that every TV or soundbar passes every format. HDMI.org explains ARC/eARC signal routing.
Confirm which part is working
Test audio and CEC controls as separate functions. Hearing sound proves the audio path works, not that every Anynet+ command does.

- Use the TV remote to raise and lower volume.
- Turn off the TV and observe whether the soundbar responds as expected.
- Switch between a built-in app and an HDMI-connected source to check input behavior.
Samsung soundbars commonly show D.IN while in digital input mode or awaiting/detecting the TV return-audio connection, then TV ARC or TV eARC when the corresponding link is active. HDMI generally indicates a conventional HDMI input. Display labels differ by model; consult the soundbar manual if yours uses other wording.
Troubleshoot by symptom
No sound from the soundbar
- Check that the cable joins the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port.
- Turn on Anynet+ and select the soundbar in the TV’s Sound Output menu.
- Set the soundbar source to D.IN if necessary, then check for TV ARC or TV eARC on its display.
- Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices and test a built-in TV app.
- Power-cycle the TV and soundbar. If there is still no sound, test a known-good cable and, if available, another compatible TV.
Samsung’s ARC troubleshooting guidance recommends isolating external devices; its soundbar troubleshooting page covers the connection and display checks.
Sound works, but the TV remote cannot change volume
Check that Anynet+ is enabled, the TV is outputting to the HDMI soundbar rather than TV speakers or optical, and the cable is in the ARC/eARC ports. Then switch Anynet+ off and on. If needed, turn both devices off, unplug them from power for several minutes, disconnect other HDMI equipment, reconnect the TV and soundbar first, re-enable Anynet+, and select the soundbar again. Samsung documents power disconnection and reinitialization for ARC connection issues in its ARC troubleshooting steps.

The soundbar turns on or off unexpectedly
Another HDMI device may be sending CEC power commands, or the HDMI handshake may be unstable. Test with only the TV and soundbar connected, then reconnect other devices one at a time. If one source causes the behavior, disable CEC on that source if you do not need its control functions. Optical can isolate HDMI-CEC conflicts, but loses HDMI control features. Do not assume ARC/eARC will continue to behave the same way with Anynet+ disabled: Samsung’s setup guidance links Anynet+ activation to its eARC setup.
Audio cuts out, or only external sources fail
Check for a loose or damaged cable, incorrect port, unsupported format, eARC mismatch, or HDMI-device interference. First test a TV app. If that works while a console or streaming box does not, investigate that source’s audio output and the TV’s pass-through settings; the fault may not be Anynet+. If routing the source through the soundbar, check the soundbar’s video and audio pass-through specifications.
eARC is unavailable or falls back to ARC
- Verify eARC support on both devices and use their eARC-marked ports.
- Enable Anynet+ and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto if the option is present.
- Check that the soundbar display indicates TV eARC, not TV ARC.
- Use a suitable eARC-compatible cable, and confirm that the source and app provide a format supported by the complete chain.
An HDMI 2.1 label by itself does not guarantee every eARC, video, or gaming capability; verify the specifications of the devices and cable for the intended use.

Choose a cable without paying for the wrong thing
For ARC, start with the correct ports and a functioning HDMI cable. For eARC, use an eARC-compatible cable; Samsung’s guidance refers to HEAC or HEC cable types. HDMI.org provides official HDMI cable and specification information. Certification, appropriate rating for the devices, length, and reliable operation matter more than “audiophile” branding or price. A cable swap is a useful test after port and setting checks, not the first reason to buy an expensive cable.
When another connection makes more sense
Optical
Optical is a practical fallback for older equipment or a setup whose HDMI control behavior is unreliable. It often avoids HDMI-CEC conflicts, but does not provide the same HDMI device-control functions and may support fewer audio formats than eARC.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth suits casual or temporary listening without a cable. For a permanent TV setup, latency, pairing interruptions, and the lack of HDMI-CEC coordination can make it less convenient.

Wi-Fi and SmartThings
Wi-Fi features can support network audio or smart functions on compatible soundbars; they are separate from the HDMI ARC audio path. Samsung notes that SmartThings may be needed to reconnect certain soundbars to Wi-Fi. This is not a replacement for Anynet+ or ARC/eARC.
Connect a source to the soundbar
A console, Blu-ray player, or streaming device can sometimes connect to a soundbar HDMI IN port, with video passed onward to the TV. This can help when a TV cannot pass a needed audio format over ARC, but only if the soundbar supports the source’s video resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and gaming features. Check the exact model’s HDMI input specifications before changing the routing.
When to consider replacing equipment
Do not replace a working soundbar just because Anynet+ is confusing or ARC is silent. First verify the ports, TV output, soundbar source, cable, and HDMI handshake with other devices disconnected. Replacement becomes a reasonable option when the TV or soundbar lacks the connection or format capability you need, or when a confirmed hardware fault persists after isolation and testing. If shopping, compare exact-model ARC/eARC support, pass-through requirements, room and speaker needs, and compatibility with the features you actually use; Samsung’s soundbar buying guide is a starting point, not a guarantee that a feature works with every TV.
