Annuals complete their life cycle in one growing season; perennials live for multiple years. Choose annuals for seasonal color you are happy to replant, perennials for plants that can return, or combine the two for a garden with lasting structure and changing color. The right choice also depends on local winter conditions and each plant’s care needs.
What annuals and perennials mean
These terms describe a plant’s life cycle, not how long it blooms. An annual grows, flowers, sets seed and finishes its life cycle in one growing season. A perennial lives for multiple years and may return from its roots after winter. A biennial generally completes its life cycle over two years.
Whether a plant actually survives and returns depends on its identity and growing conditions. A plant that is perennial in a warmer region may be treated as an annual where winters are too cold for it to survive.
How they differ in a garden
| Consideration | Annuals | Perennials |
|---|---|---|
| Life cycle | Complete their life cycle in one growing season. | Live for multiple years. |
| Color and bloom timing | Often chosen for color across much of the growing season, though bloom patterns vary by plant. | Different species bloom at different times; combining bloom periods can extend seasonal interest. |
| Planting and upkeep | Need to be planted or seeded again each year if you want to keep them in the bed. | Do not need annual replacement in the same way, but some need pruning, deadheading or rejuvenation. |
| Best fit | Seasonal displays, changing a bed from year to year, or filling temporary gaps. | Plantings intended to return over multiple years, with room for mature size and species-specific care. |
Neither category is automatically easier. Annuals require repeat planting, while perennials may require ongoing care and planning around their growth and bloom cycle.

When annuals make sense
- You want to refresh a bed or container with a different look each year.
- You want seasonal color while longer-lived plants become established.
- You need temporary plants to fill open spaces or add color after an early-blooming perennial has faded.
Annuals can provide color for much of the growing season, but no category guarantees continuous blooms. Check the expected flowering period for the particular plant you are considering.
When perennials make sense
- You want plants that may return for several years.
- You are ready to plan for each plant’s mature size and bloom season.
- You can provide any care the species needs, such as pruning, deadheading or periodic rejuvenation.
Perennials are not all alike: they vary in bloom timing, lifespan and maintenance needs. Choose them for the conditions and space you can provide rather than assuming every perennial will thrive with little care.

Why local climate and site matter
Winter survival is a key part of the decision. Some plants are perennial in warmer places but treated as annuals in colder regions. A plant’s persistence also depends on the conditions where it is grown, so check local extension or nursery guidance for plants suited to your area and garden site.

A mixed planting lets each group do a different job. Use perennials for plants that can return over time, then add annuals for seasonal color or to fill spaces while the permanent planting establishes. Combining species with different bloom periods can also help carry interest through more of the season.
