EX.’s 160 m² house in Mongreno, in the hills of Turin, treats incompletion as a design strategy: a durable concrete perimeter encloses a flexible central interior, while large openings connect domestic space visually to the landscape. The 2026 project is organized on one level, with bedrooms and bathrooms at either end and an open, adaptable space between them.
What makes the house unfinished by design?
Here, “unfinished” does not mean a construction project left incomplete. EX.’s project description uses the term to describe a house conceived as minimal domestic infrastructure: an adaptable setting that can accommodate changing uses and future appropriation rather than a fully prescribed arrangement of rooms and functions.

The plan gives that idea a clear spatial form. The house is rectangular and single-level, with a central open area that has no fixed partitions or functional hierarchy. More conventional rooms—bedrooms and bathrooms—are grouped at the two ends. This creates a distinction between spaces with established uses and a central zone whose purpose can remain more fluid.

In their description, “Dwelling is understood as a process — not as a fixed condition, and the domestic space evolves through everyday life.” This is the project’s stated design intention, not a claim about how residents have used the house over time.

How does the house connect interior space with the landscape?
The architects describe the walls as elements intended to connect rather than simply divide. Large openings make the interior visually permeable to its surroundings, setting the house up as a threshold between domestic space and the landscape of Mongreno. The relationship is presented as part of the architectural concept; the project description does not provide measurements or performance data for views, daylight, ventilation, or energy use.
That approach makes the open central area important beyond its flexibility. With fewer fixed divisions in the middle of the plan, the boundary between interior activity and the view outward is less interrupted. The bedroom and bathroom zones at the ends retain more conventional domestic definition.

How do the materials express permanence and change?
The project pairs two construction systems with contrasting roles. Dark-pigmented, exposed cast-in-place concrete forms the perimeter, while a prefabricated wood-and-metal structure sits inside it. EX.’s description associates the concrete with permanence and the prefabricated system with reversibility and transformability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat contrast supports the house’s broader proposition: a lasting outer framework can coexist with an interior intended to accommodate changing arrangements. The source describes the systems in those terms but does not specify a schedule of future alterations, construction details, or measured durability.
