An unused Amazon Fire tablet can serve as a basic indoor monitoring camera, but it is not a purpose-built security system. Install a compatible camera app such as AlfredCamera, use a second phone or computer as the viewer, and keep the tablet connected to power and Wi-Fi. The catch is compatibility: AlfredCamera may not be available or fully supported on every Fire tablet, and its free plan lacks several features found in dedicated cameras.
This is a practical way to monitor a pet, hallway, garage, workshop, or temporary indoor area when you already own the tablet. It is a poor substitute for outdoor surveillance, infrared night vision, critical safety monitoring, or a camera that must work reliably around the clock.

Which Amazon device is this?
The device is an old Amazon Fire tablet—including models sold as Kindle Fire, Fire HD, Fire 7, Fire 8, or Fire HD 10. It is not a Fire TV, Echo, Ring product, or discontinued Amazon security device.
“Obsolete” is informal shorthand for a tablet that is no longer useful to its owner. It does not necessarily mean Amazon has formally designated that model as unsupported. A Fire tablet with a working camera, microphone, Wi-Fi connection, and charger may still have a useful second life.
#1 Best Overall

- Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
- Stay up to speed — Use the 5 MP front-facing camera to Zoom with family and friends, or create content for social apps like Instagram and TikTok.
This is a third-party software setup. Amazon does not automatically convert or support every Fire tablet as a security camera.
Fire OS is based on Android, but Android compatibility does not guarantee that a particular app is available or fully supported on every Fire tablet. Amazon’s Fire-tablet documentation explains the platform relationship, while Alfred’s own compatibility information lists supported Android, iOS, computer, and AlfredCam environments without guaranteeing every Fire OS model: Amazon Fire tablet documentation and AlfredCamera’s supported-device information.
Check compatibility before doing anything else
Do not assume that an old tablet will work simply because it runs Fire OS. Perform this check first:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the tablet’s official app store.
- Search for AlfredCamera.
- Confirm that the app can be installed on that specific tablet.
- Open the camera and microphone applications to confirm that the hardware works.
- Update Fire OS and the app if updates are offered.
- Connect the tablet to its charger and test it on the intended Wi-Fi network.
Alfred currently lists Android 5.0 or later for a camera device, Android 7.0 or later for a mobile viewer, iOS 13 or later for a camera, and iOS 15 or later for a viewer. Those requirements do not mean that every Fire OS release meets Alfred’s practical compatibility requirements. Alfred also notes that older operating systems may not receive bug fixes. See the recommended requirements before relying on a particular tablet.
If AlfredCamera is not available
Do not treat unofficial APK downloads as the normal solution. Sideloaded apps can introduce malware, compatibility problems, missing permissions, and update failures. Unless you can independently verify the source and package, the safer choice is to use a supported Android phone, old iPhone, or newer tablet instead.
What you need
- An Amazon Fire tablet with a functioning camera and microphone.
- A Fire OS and app environment compatible with AlfredCamera.
- A second device—such as an Android phone, iPhone, tablet, or computer—for viewing.
- One Alfred account.
- Reliable Wi-Fi.
- A wall charger and suitable cable.
- A stable stand or mounting position.
The tablet should be treated as a continuously powered appliance. Older batteries may be degraded, and continuous video use can create heat. Never leave a tablet with a swollen, cracked, or overheating battery plugged in.
How to turn the Fire tablet into a camera
Set up the tablet as the camera
- Install AlfredCamera through the tablet’s supported app store, if it is offered for that device.
- Create an Alfred account or sign in to an existing one.
- Choose the option to use the Fire tablet as the camera device.
- Grant camera, microphone, and notification permissions when requested.
- Connect the tablet to the Wi-Fi network it will use at the monitoring location.
- Place the tablet so its front-facing camera has a clear view.
- Connect it to wall power.
- Lock or dim the display if the tablet and app continue operating correctly in that state.
Set up the viewer
- Install AlfredCamera on a supported phone, tablet, or computer.
- Sign in with the same Alfred account.
- Select the Fire tablet from the camera list.
- Confirm that live video appears.
- Test motion alerts.
- Test two-way audio if you need it.
- Trigger an event and check where it is saved under your current plan.
Alfred’s setup documentation describes the general account-and-device pairing model, although its detailed instructions focus primarily on AlfredCam hardware: Alfred’s setup guidance.
What a successful setup should provide
Depending on compatibility, network quality, and plan, you may get:
- Remote live viewing.
- Motion detection and alerts.
- Event recording.
- Two-way communication through the tablet’s microphone and speaker.
- The ability to switch between cameras from the viewer.
Do not expect flawless streaming, instant alerts, or uninterrupted recording. Those depend on the tablet’s age, Wi-Fi, power-management behavior, app version, and Alfred’s service.
What AlfredCamera’s free plan includes
The relevant distinction is free software, not a completely free security system. You still need the tablet, electricity, internet service, and a suitable place to mount it.

Alfred’s support documentation also describes free access to live viewing, activity detection, motion alerts, and event downloads. Check the current plan comparison because features and limits can change.
What Premium adds
Paid plans may add higher-resolution video, cloud event storage, continuous recording, advanced detection, and additional active cameras. The plan page checked in August 2026 displayed Premium Standard at $2.99 per month when billed annually and Premium Plus at $3.99 per month when billed annually. Monthly billing was displayed from $5.99 per month.
Alfred also announced 2026 plan changes, including a free limit of up to two online cameras and a Premium Standard price of $35.99 per year in the United States. Existing subscribers may have transition terms, and rollout timing can vary. Prices may differ by country, platform, taxes, and the offer shown in the app. Treat the in-app checkout screen as the final price source. Details are in Alfred’s 2026 pricing announcement.
Do not subscribe merely to compensate for an unreliable tablet. A subscription can add software features; it cannot give the Fire tablet infrared hardware, a wider lens, a new battery, or better Wi-Fi.

Where this setup makes sense
- Pet monitoring: Check whether a pet is in a room or reacting to a noise.
- Indoor hallway monitoring: Watch an entryway from inside the home.
- Temporary travel monitoring: Keep an eye on a room while away for a short period.
- Garage or workshop: Monitor an interior space where occasional alerts are sufficient.
- Storage areas: Check a room containing tools, materials, or belongings.
- Package-area view: Monitor an indoor-facing view of a hallway or entry area, subject to privacy rules.
- Supplemental child monitoring: Use it only as an extra view, not as a replacement for a dedicated baby monitor or responsible supervision.
Do not place the tablet in a bathroom, in a bedroom occupied by adults without their knowledge and consent, or anywhere recording would violate privacy expectations or local law. Tell household members and visitors when indoor recording is active.
Placement, power, and heat
Place the tablet on a hard, stable, ventilated surface or in a secure stand. Make sure:
- The camera lens is unobstructed by a case or screen protector.
- The view is not aimed directly at a bright window.
- The charging cable cannot be easily pulled loose.
- The tablet cannot fall onto a child or pet.
- Visitors cannot easily walk away with it.
- The tablet is not exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat.
- The battery shows no swelling or physical damage.
A tablet is larger and more conspicuous than a purpose-built camera. It can also be awkward to mount. Keep it out of reach where possible, but do not enclose it in a way that traps heat.
Why it is not a full security-camera replacement
| Factor | Old Fire tablet with AlfredCamera | Dedicated camera |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware cost | Potentially zero if the tablet is already owned | Requires a purchase |
| Power | Usually needs continuous wall power | Purpose-built USB, wired, or battery options |
| Night viewing | Usually lacks purpose-built infrared night vision | Common on indoor and outdoor models |
| Mounting | May require an improvised stand or mount | Designed for mounting |
| Detection | Basic motion detection on the free plan | Often offers person, pet, vehicle, or zone detection |
| Recording | Free plan emphasizes local event storage | May support local storage, cloud storage, or both |
| Reliability | Depends heavily on tablet age and Fire OS behavior | Usually designed for continuous operation |
| Weather resistance | Generally unsuitable outdoors | Outdoor models may be weather-rated |
A Fire tablet may be useful for casual indoor monitoring, but it is a weak choice when missed alerts could cause harm. It may overheat, lose Wi-Fi, stop background activity, suffer battery failure, or eventually lose app support. Its fixed field of view may also leave important areas outside the frame.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrivacy and account security
An internet-connected tablet camera creates privacy considerations even when the software is free. Alfred describes security measures for its service, but no internet-connected camera should be treated as risk-free. Review Alfred’s security information and its terms of service before using it in a sensitive location.
Rank #3
- Like-New Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet is refurbished, tested, and certified to look and work like new and comes with the same limited warranty as a new device. Like-New Amazon devices may be packaged in generic Amazon-branded boxes.
- Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
- Responsive with all day battery life - Includes 3GB RAM (50% more than 2022 release), 32GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately). Up to 13 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching videos, gaming, and listening to music at home and on-the-go.
- Save time, get creative - Enjoy three smart tools to help you send polished emails, quickly summarize webpages, and create unique wallpapers.
- Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
- Use a unique, strong Alfred password.
- Enable available account-security features.
- Keep the tablet, app, and viewer device updated.
- Use a secured home Wi-Fi network.
- Do not casually share the viewer account.
- Review who can access the camera.
- Delete old recordings when they are no longer needed.
- Consider whether cloud processing and storage are acceptable.
- Obtain consent from household members and comply with applicable recording laws.
A free plan is not automatically a private plan. Local event storage may reduce cloud retention, but the app still requires an account and networked service.
Troubleshooting common failures
The app does not appear in the store
This is the most important compatibility failure. Confirm the Fire OS version and search again after installing available system updates. If the app remains unavailable, use another supported device rather than assuming that an unofficial APK will work safely.
The tablet sleeps or stops sending video
- Keep it connected to wall power.
- Review battery-saving or background-activity settings where available.
- Keep the app updated.
- Test it continuously for several hours before relying on it.
- Restart the app or tablet if the feed stops.
Fire OS labels differ by version, so there is no single settings path that applies to every Fire tablet.
There are too many motion alerts
Basic motion detection may react to shadows, curtains, pets, changing light, passing headlights, or reflections. Move the tablet away from windows and moving objects. If detection zones or person-only detection are restricted to a paid plan, the free tier will not provide the same filtering.
The image is unusable at night
Most tablets are not equivalent to infrared security cameras. Add adequate lighting or use the tablet only in a well-lit room. Do not assume that an ordinary tablet camera has night vision.
Remote viewing fails
- Confirm that the camera tablet is powered on.
- Check its Wi-Fi connection.
- Confirm that AlfredCamera is still running.
- Restart the app.
- Restart the tablet.
- Test the viewer on cellular data and another Wi-Fi network.
- Check whether Alfred is experiencing a service problem.
- Re-pair or reinstall only after confirming that you know the account credentials.
Two-way audio is poor
The tablet’s microphone and speaker determine audio quality. Distance, background noise, a protective case, and echo cancellation can make conversations difficult. Treat two-way audio as a convenience feature, not a replacement for an intercom.
When to choose a dedicated camera instead
Repurposing the tablet is reasonable when you already own it, the app installs officially, indoor monitoring is enough, and occasional motion alerts meet your needs.
Choose a dedicated camera when you need:
- Infrared night vision.
- Outdoor or weather-resistant operation.
- A compact, secure mount.
- Wide-angle coverage.
- Continuous recording.
- Local microSD storage or dependable cloud history.
- Person, pet, vehicle, or activity-zone detection.
- Battery backup or more reliable power behavior.
- Manufacturer-backed hardware support.
- Monitoring for a high-value or safety-critical area.
Potential alternatives include Ring, Blink, Wyze, Reolink, and Google Nest. Compare their current storage, subscription, privacy, night-vision, and local-recording policies rather than choosing solely on purchase price.
Verdict
An old Fire tablet can become a useful, low-cost indoor monitoring device if AlfredCamera is available for that exact tablet and the device remains stable on power and Wi-Fi. The free tier can provide live viewing, basic motion alerts, and local event recording for up to two active cameras.
It is best understood as a temporary or casual monitoring solution—not a free replacement for a dedicated security camera. For outdoor use, night surveillance, critical alerts, secure mounting, or dependable continuous recording, purpose-built hardware is the safer choice.
