Most Echo Dot (4th Gen) owners should keep their current speaker. The Echo Dot (5th Gen) is a better compact speaker, adding a larger driver, temperature sensing and more tap-based controls, but it does not fundamentally change Alexa, routines or everyday smart-home control.
For a new buyer, the 5th Gen is usually the better choice when its price is close to the 4th Gen. For an existing owner, upgrade only if better sound, temperature-aware routines or tap gestures matter to you. If you use the 4th Gen’s 3.5mm audio jack, do not upgrade without a replacement plan.

First, make sure you are comparing the right products
This is a comparison of the Echo Dot (4th Gen) and Echo Dot (5th Gen)—not the larger, full-size Echo (4th Gen). The full-size Echo is a more powerful speaker and can produce misleading comparisons when reviews mix the product names. The 5th-generation Echo Dot launched in the US on October 20, 2022, according to TechRadar.

What is better on the Echo Dot (5th Gen)?
1. The speaker is larger and generally sounds fuller
The 5th Gen uses a 1.73-inch, 44 mm front-firing driver, compared with the approximately 1.6-inch driver in the 4th Gen. That gives the newer model more room to produce low-end energy and a fuller presentation at ordinary listening volumes.
You are most likely to notice the difference with music, podcasts and spoken-word content in a bedroom, office or kitchen. Independent reviews from TechRadar and What Hi-Fi? describe the 5th Gen as an improved compact speaker, while also noting the limitations of its small, single-driver design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis is an incremental improvement, not a transformation. The 5th Gen is not a replacement for a full-size Echo or a dedicated speaker, and it can lose composure when pushed hard. It is better suited to casual listening than to filling a large room or hosting a party.
2. Temperature sensing enables temperature-related routines
The 5th Gen documentation identifies temperature sensing as a feature. That can be useful for routines—for example, triggering an action when the surrounding temperature reaches a chosen threshold.

Placement matters. A Dot beside a radiator, sunny window, HVAC vent, kitchen appliance or exterior door may measure its immediate surroundings rather than provide a useful estimate of the room as a whole. Treat the feature as convenient environmental sensing, not as a calibrated thermostat or a substitute for dedicated HVAC equipment.
Exact routine support can depend on the Alexa app, device software, region and model variant. Check the current device controls before relying on a particular automation.

3. Tap interactions are more useful
The 5th Gen adds expanded tap-based interaction hardware. Depending on the supported feature and current software, tapping the device can be useful for actions such as dismissing an alarm or controlling playback without saying a wake word.
This is a convenience upgrade rather than a new Alexa platform. If you rarely dismiss alarms or control audio from the speaker itself, it is unlikely to justify replacing a working 4th Gen.
What has not meaningfully changed?
Both devices remain Alexa smart speakers for the same familiar tasks:

Independent coverage has characterized the two generations as close in everyday Alexa functionality. The 5th Gen should not be bought on the assumption that it will make every request dramatically faster or unlock a fundamentally different assistant experience. Amazon can change software support, subscriptions and newer services independently of the hardware, so do not assume that every future feature will arrive on both devices.

The Echo Dot (4th Gen) includes a 3.5mm audio connection. The Echo Dot (5th Gen) removes it. This is not merely a cosmetic port change: for some owners, it is a functional downgrade.
With the 4th Gen, you can connect to older powered speakers, feed audio into an amplifier or stereo system, and avoid the pairing and reconnection issues that can accompany Bluetooth. If your Dot is part of a wired audio setup, the 5th Gen does not offer a direct equivalent.
You can use Bluetooth with the 5th Gen, but Bluetooth is not the same as a wired connection. Do not assume a USB-to-audio adapter will restore the missing jack; the Dot’s USB connection is not automatically an analog audio output.
Keep the 4th Gen if you rely on wired audio. The newer speaker’s sound improvement is not enough to offset losing a connection you actively use.

How much difference will you hear?
Voice and podcasts
The 5th Gen may sound fuller and clearer at moderate volume, especially with voices that benefit from a little more body. The improvement is useful in close listening spaces, but owners who already find the 4th Gen clear enough may not consider it worth the replacement cost.
Music
Music is the strongest audio argument for the 5th Gen. Its larger driver gives it better low-end capability and a more substantial presentation than the 4th Gen. Bass-heavy tracks are where the difference is most likely to matter.
Neither Dot should be treated as a serious room-filling speaker. If you regularly listen in a large room, want higher-volume playback or care more about sound quality than compact size, compare the price of a full-size Echo before choosing either Dot.
By room
- Bedroom or office: The 5th Gen is a worthwhile audio refinement if you listen regularly.
- Kitchen: Either model works for timers and recipes; the 5th Gen is preferable if it is also your everyday music speaker.
- Guest room or garage: A discounted 4th Gen may be the better value for basic commands.
- Large room: Consider a full-size Echo rather than expecting either Dot to provide room-filling sound.
Smart-home features, pairing and privacy
Smart-home control
For lights, plugs, routines, timers and voice commands, the two generations are broadly similar. The presence of newer sensors does not automatically make the 5th Gen a more capable smart-home hub. Check the exact radio and hub capabilities of the Echo model you are considering rather than assuming every Dot supports every device type.

- EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
If you are building a stereo pair, matching models are the safest choice. If you already have several 4th Gen units, keeping them together—or moving one to another room—may be less frustrating than rebuilding your setup. Before buying, check Amazon’s current compatible-device list and the pairing options shown in the Alexa app.
Privacy controls
Both generations provide a physical microphone-off button and controls for reviewing or deleting voice recordings. The 5th Gen manual also describes wake-word technology, streaming indicators and voice-recording controls.
A microphone-off button is not the same as removing power. Voice recordings and broader device telemetry are separate privacy questions. Amazon’s account and Alexa app menus can change, so review the current settings directly if retention and deletion controls are important to you.

Keep the Echo Dot (4th Gen) if:
- You mainly use timers, alarms, weather, questions and smart-home commands.
- You already like how it sounds in its room.
- You depend on the 3.5mm audio jack.
- You have several 4th Gen speakers in an established multi-room setup.
- The 5th Gen is close to full list price while a 4th Gen is substantially cheaper.
Upgrade to the Echo Dot (5th Gen) if:
- You are dissatisfied with the 4th Gen’s sound.
- You use a Dot primarily for music, podcasts or spoken-word listening.
- You want temperature-based routines and can place the device where its readings will be meaningful.
- You would use tap gestures for alarms or playback.
- You can buy the 5th Gen at a substantial discount or cheaply redeploy the 4th Gen elsewhere.
Choose a different Echo if:
- You want stronger music performance: Compare a full-size Echo or the newer Echo Dot Max. Amazon’s own positioning for the Dot Max should not be treated as independent measurement; compare the live price and specifications before buying.
- You want a screen: Choose an Echo Show for visual timers, recipes, video or camera feeds.
- You need portability: Neither standard Dot is a battery-powered speaker without an accessory.
- You want a different assistant or privacy model: Compare Google/Nest or Apple-compatible alternatives separately.
Price and value
The commonly cited US list-price reference for the Echo Dot (5th Gen) is $49.99. Actual prices fluctuate during Amazon and retailer promotions, and the evidence available here does not establish a reliable live US price for September 8, 2026. Check the current listing before making a purchase decision; do not treat an expired promotion as today’s price.
As practical buying guidance:
- Within about $10–$15: Choose the 5th Gen for a new purchase unless you need wired audio.
- More than about $20 cheaper: A 4th Gen can be sensible for basic Alexa use, a secondary room or a wired setup.
- Near the price of a full-size Echo: Compare the larger Echo before buying a Dot if music quality matters.
These are decision thresholds, not manufacturer rules. They become especially important for used or refurbished units. Check that a secondhand 4th Gen includes its power adapter, has working microphones, has an undamaged 3.5mm port, can be deregistered from the previous owner’s account, and comes with a return policy and warranty. Also verify whether it is the clock or non-clock version.
Final verdict
For existing Echo Dot (4th Gen) owners, the 5th Gen is a worthwhile replacement only when its hardware refinements solve a real problem. Better compact-room audio, temperature sensing and tap controls are legitimate improvements, but they do not amount to a transformational Alexa upgrade.
For new buyers, choose the Echo Dot (5th Gen) when the price is close and you do not need a 3.5mm connection. Choose the 4th Gen when it is meaningfully cheaper or when wired audio is important. Choose a larger Echo when your priority is genuinely stronger music performance.
