To keep a chainsaw ready to use, follow its manual and check the chain, lubrication, controls, safety features, protective equipment, and work area before starting. This guide focuses on chainsaws because their readiness checks differ from those for workshop saws. For any saw, the exact maintenance and operating steps depend on its model; use the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before you start: match the saw to the job

Choose a chainsaw suited to the work and read its manual before operating it. A saw that is poorly matched to the task can make the work harder to control. The CDC recommends choosing an appropriate saw size and following the manufacturer’s instructions: CDC chainsaw safety guidance.

“Saw” can also mean a handheld circular saw or a jigsaw. Those workshop tools need their own blade, guard, and operating checks; the chainsaw checklist below is not a substitute for their manuals.

Chainsaw readiness checklist

With the saw off and prepared as its manual directs, work through these checks before each use. Do not operate it if a control or safety component is missing, damaged, or not working.

OSHA includes control, chain-tension, bolt, and handle checks in its pre-start requirements for logging work in the United States; follow your manual for the procedure and any adjustment.
  • Chain condition and tension: Check that the chain is sharp, undamaged, and tensioned as the manufacturer specifies. A dull or incorrectly tensioned chain is not ready for work. CDC guidance discusses chain sharpening and tension checks: CDC chainsaw safety guidance.
  • Lubrication: Confirm that the saw has the correct bar-and-chain oil and that the lubrication system is working as described in the manual. Do not substitute another oil unless the manufacturer permits it. STIHL’s maintenance guidance covers chain lubrication and routine care: STIHL chainsaw maintenance guidance.
  • Safety features: Check for the chain brake, hand guards, stop switch, and chain catcher, and confirm they are present and functioning according to the manual. CDC also identifies a spark arrester among features to look for. The USDA Forest Service guide explains chainsaw components and their roles: USDA Forest Service chainsaw training guide.
  • Protective equipment: CDC lists a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, heavy work gloves, cut-resistant legwear, and boots that cover the ankles. Select equipment appropriate to the task and follow the saw maker’s and applicable workplace requirements.
  • Work area: Look for nails, cables, power lines, unstable limbs, and anything blocking a retreat path. Treat bent or tensioned branches—sometimes called spring poles—as a particular hazard because they can release force when cut. CDC provides chainsaw hazard guidance: CDC chainsaw safety guidance.

Set up the work area and protect others

Plan the cut before starting. Identify overhead and ground-level hazards, the direction a tree or limb could move, and a clear route away from the cutting area. Keep bystanders out of the work zone. The distance needed depends on the operation: felling a tree and removing limbs are different tasks, so do not treat one distance as a universal safe boundary. Use the CDC guidance and your training to determine the applicable separation.

Power lines and spring poles deserve particular caution. Do not cut near a power line, or attempt to handle a tensioned limb beyond your training and equipment. If the tree, limb, or hazard cannot be assessed safely, stop and consult a qualified professional.

This saves you time, fuel, and wear and tear on your chainsaw.
  • Accuracy: A dulled chain causes the chainsaw user to lean onto the chainsaw tool and press the wood to be cut more firmly, this is not safe and will ultimately lead to an accident. Sharp Pebble electric chain saw sharpener will have your chain sharpened within few passes. This will put less pressure on the chainsaw engine, which in turn ensures that your tool will last longer.

Keep maintenance supplies compatible with the saw

Useful chainsaw maintenance supplies can include round and flat files, a depth gauge, a stump vise, a scrench, and bar-and-chain oil. Battery-powered saws require a compatible battery and charger. STIHL lists these types of maintenance items, but the correct specifications vary by saw: STIHL chainsaw maintenance guidance.

If buying a maintenance kit or replacement chain, check the manual for file size, chain pitch, gauge, drive-link count, battery platform, and oil requirements. A kit or chain that fits one saw may not fit another. The USDA guide describes common chain, guide-bar, tensioner, brake, and catcher components: USDA Forest Service chainsaw training guide.

If you mean a workshop saw

For handheld saws, blade choice and guarding are central readiness checks. OSHA distinguishes these typical uses: circular saws make straight cuts, with blade selection affecting rip or crosscut work; jigsaws are suited to intricate curves and patterns in thin stock. Use the appropriate blade, keep it maintained, use the guard, and wear eye or face protection. See OSHA guidance on handheld saws.

Saw type Typical task described by OSHA or CDC Readiness priority
Chainsaw Outdoor wood cutting; choose a size appropriate to the job. Manual, chain sharpness and tension, lubrication, safety features, PPE, and work area.
Handheld circular saw Straight cuts; blade selection affects rip or crosscut use. Suitable blade, working guard, maintained blade, and eye or face protection.
Jigsaw Intricate curves and patterns in thin stock. Suitable blade, guarding, maintained blade, and eye or face protection.

The workshop-saw distinctions and precautions are summarized in OSHA’s portable power-tool guidance. For all three types, the particular model’s manual governs setup and operation.

Workplace rules are not the same as household advice

OSHA’s chainsaw pre-start, fueling, starting, and carrying procedures cited here apply to covered logging work in the United States. They should not be presented as universal household instructions. Workers should follow the applicable OSHA requirements, employer procedures, training, and the saw manual: OSHA logging standard, 29 CFR 1910.266.
