The practical way to turn a building concept into an insulated-panel specification is to start with the assembly you need—not with a single “best” panel. All Weather Insulated Panels (AWIP) lists wall, roof, low-slope roof-deck, fire-rated, solar and backup-wall systems. Your project team should compare those families against the building’s use, appearance, code obligations, fire strategy, thermal and moisture conditions, structural spans and installation method.
The product information promoted here comes from a sponsored Building Design + Construction article published February 14, 2025, and AWIP-controlled technical pages. It explains the manufacturer’s portfolio and selection approach; it is not independent testing, a neutral cost study or a comparison with competing manufacturers.
What All Weather Insulated Panels offers
AWIP describes itself as a manufacturer of insulated metal wall, roof and roof-deck systems intended to address performance, design and sustainability requirements. The company was founded in 2006, according to the sponsored Building Design + Construction article. Its current portfolio is organized by assembly and special project need rather than by one universal panel.
AWIP presents applications across commercial and industrial markets, including cold storage, offices, education, food processing, infrastructure and industrial facilities. Those market categories indicate where the company positions its products; they do not prove that every listed system is suitable for every building in those sectors. A specification still has to establish the required fire, structural, thermal, moisture, hygiene and installation performance for the particular project.

Choose the system family by assembly first
The first decision is whether the panel is serving as a wall, roof, roof deck, backup wall or a component of a fire-rated or solar strategy. AWIP’s categories provide a useful starting map, but the final choice must come from current product documents and the project’s governing codes.
| AWIP-listed family | Typical project question | Evidence to request before specification |
|---|---|---|
| Wall systems | Is the insulated metal panel the exterior or interior wall enclosure, and what profile and finish must it provide? | Panel construction, allowable spans, attachment and joint details, thermal data, condensation guidance, finishes and installation instructions. |
| Roof systems | Will the panel form the weathering roof assembly, and what slope, drainage and maintenance conditions apply? | Roof slope limits, structural tables, weather-seal details, penetrations, drainage, uplift and applicable code listings. |
| Low-slope roof-deck systems | Does the deck need to bridge supports while supporting the specified roof build-up? | Span and load tables, support spacing, fasteners, diaphragm or structural assumptions, interfaces with the roof membrane and sequencing requirements. |
| Fire-rated systems | Is a tested fire-resistance period required for the complete wall or roof assembly? | The exact listing or report, test standard, assembly configuration, joints, penetrations, orientation, limits and code edition accepted by the authority having jurisdiction. |
| Solar systems | How will photovoltaic equipment be supported without compromising the roof or wall envelope? | Approved attachment method, load path, waterproofing details, wind and snow effects, maintenance access and coordination with the solar designer. |
| Backup-wall systems | Is the insulated panel part of a secondary enclosure behind another exterior finish? | Interface details, air and vapor-control strategy, drainage, fasteners, tolerances and compatibility with the exterior cladding. |
Turn the design concept into measurable requirements
Define the building use and exposure
Cold storage, food processing, offices and industrial spaces can impose very different enclosure requirements. Record interior temperature and humidity ranges, wash-down or sanitation routines, corrosive exposure, impact risk, expected maintenance and whether the building must remain operational during installation. A panel selected for a dry office wall should not be assumed appropriate for a chilled room or a high-washdown production area.

Set the architectural target
Panel profile, joint expression, finish, color and orientation affect the building’s appearance. Ask for the available profiles and finishes for the specific family under consideration, then check how corners, base conditions, parapets, openings and transitions will look. A visually convincing concept can fail at these interfaces if the details are left until procurement.
Separate performance claims from project evidence
Manufacturer literature can identify intended benefits, but the project record needs documents that apply to the specified product, thickness, joint, support condition and installation. Require the exact technical data sheet, tested assembly information, engineering tables and installation manual rather than relying on a generic brochure or a photograph of a completed building.
Verify fire and code compliance before design freeze
Fire performance belongs to the complete tested or listed assembly, not simply to the phrase “fire-rated panel.” Confirm the test standard, rating duration, panel configuration, joint treatment, fasteners, penetrations, orientation and any limitations. Then ask the design professional and authority having jurisdiction whether that documentation satisfies the adopted code for the project’s occupancy, height, area and location.

AWIP’s DM40-F+ with InnovaCELL product page describes a fire-rated insulated metal panel and states that its wall assembly was tested and certified to ASTM E119 for a one-hour rating. That is an AWIP manufacturer statement about the specified assembly. Before using it in a design, obtain the current listing or certification, verify that the proposed thickness and details match, and confirm acceptance with the code official. Do not transfer the one-hour figure to another AWIP family or to a field-modified assembly.
Check thermal, air and moisture behavior as a system
Thermal performance depends on more than a nominal insulation value. Compare the required U-value or R-value, thermal bridges at supports and joints, interior humidity, exterior climate, air leakage control, vapor movement and condensation risk. For refrigerated or humid spaces, model or otherwise evaluate the interfaces around openings, corners, penetrations and transitions to other materials.
AWIP product pages make manufacturer claims concerning thermal performance, vapor intrusion, condensation control, handling and installation speed. Treat those statements as product claims until they are matched to current technical documents and your project conditions. Ask which test method produced each value, whether it describes the panel alone or an installed assembly, and what assumptions apply to joints, fasteners and temperature differences.

Coordinate span, orientation and installation
Panel length, support spacing and orientation can determine whether a concept is buildable. Have the structural engineer check the manufacturer’s allowable-span and load tables for the actual wind, snow, seismic, dead and live loads, including construction-stage loads. Confirm whether the tables assume simple or continuous spans, specific fasteners, minimum bearing, a particular panel direction or limits on openings.
Installation planning should cover delivery length and weight, lifting equipment, temporary protection, substrate tolerances, joint preparation, sealants, fastener sequence and weather restrictions. Ask for the current installation manual and identify who is responsible for field modifications. Cutting, drilling or relocating joints without an approved detail can affect fire, air, water and warranty requirements.
Use a documented selection process
- Write the enclosure brief. Record the building use, climate and exposure, interior conditions, required appearance, spans, fire rating, thermal targets, moisture controls, sustainability objectives and schedule.
- Identify candidate families. Select the AWIP wall, roof, roof-deck, fire-rated, solar or backup-wall category that matches the assembly. Do not treat categories as interchangeable.
- Request current documents. Obtain product data sheets, section properties, span tables, fire-test or listing information, finish information, details, installation instructions and any engineering approvals from an AWIP representative or authorized commercial channel.
- Overlay the project conditions. Compare the documents with the adopted code, structural loads, temperature and humidity, corrosion exposure, sanitation needs, penetrations, supports and adjacent assemblies.
- Resolve interfaces. Detail openings, corners, parapets, bases, roof-to-wall transitions, vapor and air seals, drainage, fire stopping and solar attachments before final procurement.
- Record approvals and substitutions. Keep the selected product, thickness, finish, listing, details and revision date in the specification. Require equivalent documentation for any substitution.
What the DM40-F+ example can—and cannot—tell you
The DM40-F+ with InnovaCELL illustrates why product-specific verification matters. AWIP identifies it as a fire-rated insulated metal panel and reports a one-hour ASTM E119 wall-assembly certification. That example may be relevant when a project needs a tested fire-resistance period, but it does not establish the performance of every AWIP wall, roof or deck product.

The same product page presents claims about thermal behavior, resistance to vapor intrusion and condensation, handling and installation speed, and labor. Those claims should be checked against the current technical package, the exact assembly and the site conditions. A one-hour wall rating, for example, does not answer a roof-uplift question, a refrigerated-room condensation question or a structural-span question.
Assess sustainability without assuming a result
AWIP positions its systems for sustainability needs, but the supplied material does not provide an independent lifecycle assessment, energy-savings study, embodied-carbon figure or comparative environmental ranking. Ask for project-relevant environmental product declarations, recycled-content information, durability data, end-of-life guidance and operational-energy assumptions if those factors affect the design. Keep each claim tied to a document and a defined boundary; “sustainable” by itself is not a measurable specification.
Common selection mistakes and their fixes
- Choosing by appearance alone: A profile or color does not establish fire, structural or moisture performance. Match the visual selection to a documented assembly.
- Using a generic fire statement: Verify the exact test or listing, rating period, configuration and code acceptance.
- Ignoring joints and penetrations: Envelope failures often occur at interfaces. Detail and review these locations before ordering panels.
- Assuming one span table applies everywhere: Check support spacing, loads, orientation, bearing and fasteners for the actual project.
- Leaving installation to the end: Confirm lifting, sequencing, substrate tolerance, weather protection and field-modification rules during design.
- Treating promotional claims as independent results: Label manufacturer claims and request the underlying test, listing or engineering document.
- Skipping local review: The authority having jurisdiction may require specific reports, editions, seals or conditions beyond a manufacturer summary.
Questions to send with a representative request

How to decide whether AWIP fits your project
AWIP can be a candidate when an insulated metal wall, roof, roof-deck, fire-rated, solar or backup-wall system aligns with the project’s assembly and documentation requirements. The decision is defensible only after the team has matched the exact product to the intended use, appearance, code evidence, thermal and moisture conditions, structural spans and installation plan.
Use AWIP’s representative route and technical resources to obtain current information, then have the architect, engineer, contractor and code official review the same revision-controlled documents. That process turns a promotional vision into a buildable, approvable enclosure without assuming that a single panel solves every condition.
