Verdict: Aldi’s battery video doorbell was potentially acceptable as a very cheap intercom, but not as a serious security camera. Its reported £16.99 launch price bought two-way talk, night vision, notifications and local microSD recording without a mandatory subscription. However, the camera records at only 480p, its outdoor protection was not backed by a confirmed IP rating, and its long-term support is unclear.
There is also an important timing point: the £16.99 offer was an October 2025 in-store launch promotion. Aldi’s linked product page now returns 404, so availability and price should not be treated as current without checking Aldi directly.

What Aldi was selling
The product was sold as the Aldi Smart Video Doorbell, with coverage identifying the device as a Reka model. It launched in UK Aldi stores in October 2025 at £16.99. Contemporary reports said it was not available to order online.
It was a battery-powered doorbell supplied with an indoor chime and smartphone app. The advertised features included:

Those features look impressive for £17, but the headline specification that matters most is the camera resolution.
The 480p camera is the deal-breaker
480p is substantially less detailed than the 1080p, 2K or 4K video now available on many competing doorbells. That difference is not merely technical. It affects whether footage can help you identify somebody or understand what happened.

A 480p image may be sufficient to see that a courier is at the door and speak to them through the app. It is much less useful for identifying an unfamiliar visitor standing several metres away, reading a parcel label, distinguishing clothing details or recording a vehicle.
Digital zoom cannot restore detail that the sensor never captured. Compression, movement, darkness and night vision can reduce usable detail further. The limitation becomes more serious when the doorbell faces a pavement, driveway, gate or large front garden rather than a caller standing immediately in front of it.
In other words, having video is not the same as having useful security video. The Aldi model might function as a remote door intercom, but 480p makes it a weak choice for evidence gathering or visitor identification.
Subscription-free does not mean hassle-free
Local microSD recording is a genuine advantage for buyers who want to avoid recurring cloud fees. But “subscription-free” should not be confused with “cost-free”, “cloud-free” or “maintenance-free”.

The reported 32GB maximum is modest for security footage. How quickly it fills will depend on recording mode, motion frequency, clip length and compression. A busy, street-facing entrance could generate far more events than a quiet sheltered doorway.
Local storage also has weaknesses:
- The card can become full, fail or become corrupted.
- If someone steals the doorbell, the card may be stolen with it.
- Removing the unit for maintenance can create gaps in coverage.
- Remote viewing may still depend on the app, an account and an internet connection.
- The product may still use cloud services for notifications or other functions; “subscription-free” does not prove that all processing is local.
Check the manual and privacy documentation for the exact storage and data-handling arrangements before relying on the device.

Outdoor durability is not clearly documented
Launch coverage described the doorbell as water- and dust-resistant, but no confirmed official IP rating was revealed in the available information. It should therefore not automatically be described as weatherproof or suitable for every exposed installation.
Before mounting it outside, check the packaging or manual for specific guidance on driving rain, frost, direct sunlight and operating temperatures. Also check whether replacement batteries, mounting hardware and other accessories are available.
The lack of a confirmed IP rating is not proof that the doorbell will fail outdoors. It is, however, a documentation and longevity concern—particularly for a device intended to remain outside throughout the year.
Battery power brings its own compromises
A battery-powered installation avoids wiring and is convenient for renters or anyone who cannot alter the entrance. The trade-off is regular charging or battery replacement.
Battery life depends on motion frequency, Wi-Fi strength, temperature, night vision and notification settings. A door facing a busy pavement may activate much more often than a quiet entrance. When the battery runs down, removing the doorbell creates a period without coverage.
No independently verified runtime figure should be assumed. Check the exact battery type, capacity, charging method and replacement options before buying, rather than relying on a generic advertised estimate.

The Aldi doorbell is defensible only for a narrow use case: a very low-cost way to see and speak to someone at a nearby, sheltered front door.
It may suit you if all of the following apply:
- The price is genuinely around £17.
- The caller will stand close to the camera.
- You mainly want delivery alerts and two-way conversation.
- You do not need reliable facial, parcel or vehicle identification.
- You are comfortable managing a microSD card and battery.
- You have a practical return route if the app, chime or Wi-Fi performance disappoints.
For a small flat entrance where the camera is only a few feet from the caller, 480p may be tolerable. That is very different from using it to monitor a driveway, side gate or large garden.

Who should avoid it?
Avoid it if any of these requirements matter:
- Identifying visitors at a distance
- Reading delivery labels or vehicle details
- Monitoring a busy or exposed outdoor area
- Reliable night-time evidence
- Long-term firmware and app support
- Replacement batteries and accessories
- Established privacy documentation and customer support
- Smart-home integrations or activity-zone controls
The available launch coverage also did not provide independent testing of battery life, latency, notification reliability, false alerts, audio quality, night vision, Wi-Fi performance, SD-card behaviour or weather resistance. TechRadar explicitly said it had not yet tested the product. Treat those areas as unknowns, not proven strengths.
What spending more can get you
TP-Link Tapo D230S1
The TP-Link Tapo D230S1 is a much more fully specified option. It advertises 2K 5MP video at 2560 × 1920, person, pet, vehicle and package detection, a removable 6700mAh battery, IP64 protection and local microSD storage through its included hub, with cards supported up to 512GB.
That makes it a better fit for buyers who want meaningful image quality and local recording without relying solely on a cloud subscription. Its claimed battery figures are test-condition estimates, so real-world life will vary with event frequency and settings. It is not the right choice for someone who wants the absolute lowest upfront cost or dislikes using a hub.
Reolink Video Doorbell Battery
Reolink’s battery video doorbell is aimed more directly at buyers seeking a subscription-free security product. It is worth considering where video quality, recording and security features matter more than matching Aldi’s launch price. Check current UK availability, battery performance and app compatibility before purchase.
Eufy battery video doorbells
Eufy’s UK battery doorbell range offers another established alternative for buyers interested in local storage and no compulsory monthly plan. Storage arrangements vary by model: some use a HomeBase hub, while others have different local or cloud options. Confirm the exact model’s architecture before buying.
Ring Battery Doorbell
Ring is a different proposition. Ring’s UK plan page currently lists the Solo plan at £4.99 per month or £49.99 per year for one device, including recording and up to 180 days of playback. Ring doorbells can still offer live viewing and alerts without a plan, so it is inaccurate to say that Ring universally requires a subscription. However, recorded footage and advanced features are closely tied to the paid service.
Ring is therefore best treated as a contrast: it offers a more established ecosystem, but it is a poor fit if avoiding recurring fees is your main reason for shopping.
Practical checks before buying any cheap battery doorbell
- Check availability and price. The Aldi £16.99 figure belongs to the October 2025 launch. The retailer’s linked product page now returns 404.
- Test Wi-Fi at the mounting point. A strong signal beside the router does not guarantee reliable notifications at the front door.
- Confirm storage requirements. Check whether a microSD card is included, the maximum supported capacity and how footage is overwritten.
- Read the outdoor rating. Do not assume “water-resistant” means formally IP-rated or suitable for exposed conditions.
- Check the battery arrangement. Confirm charging, runtime guidance and whether replacement batteries are available.
- Review privacy information. Establish whether the app requires an account and whether any cloud processing is involved.
- Consider the view. Avoid unnecessarily capturing neighbours’ property or a shared hallway, particularly when renting.
Final verdict
Aldi’s Reka video doorbell was an extraordinary price on paper, but the saving came with compromises that matter more than the lack of a subscription. The 480p camera is adequate for basic visitor conversation yet a serious weakness for identification, parcels, driveways and security evidence. The limited storage, battery maintenance, uncertain IP certification and unclear long-term support add further risk.
Buy it only as the cheapest possible smart intercom, if you find it at around the original price and can accept poor video. Do not buy it as a serious home-security camera. For a more dependable subscription-free setup, spend more on a recognised locally recording model such as Tapo, Reolink or a suitable Eufy doorbell.
