Albino Plants: Rare White Wonders and How They Survive

Most albino shoots are short-lived without chlorophyll. Ghost pipe depends on fungi for sugars, while albino redwood shoots draw resources from an attached green parent.

Most albino plant growth cannot survive for long on its own: without chlorophyll, it cannot photosynthesize to make food. Ghost pipe is different because it naturally gets sugars through fungi connected to tree roots, while albino coast redwood shoots can persist by drawing resources from an attached green parent tree. A white plant is not automatically an albino plant, and these examples do not show that an independent, fully albino plant can thrive without another source of resources.

Why chlorophyll matters

Chlorophyll captures light energy for photosynthesis, the process plants use to make sugars. When leaves and stems lack chlorophyll, those tissues cannot photosynthesize in the usual way. A pigment-deficient seedling may have a small reserve of food from its seed, but it cannot replenish that supply through its white growth.

The National Park Service explains that leaves and stems expressing albinism do not tend to live long because they cannot photosynthesize without chlorophyll. John Zasada, writing for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute’s Alaska Science Forum, put the problem this way: “Without chlorophyll, the albino plant has no way to manufacture the food needed for survival and growth to maturity.”

How ordinary albino seedlings and shoots fare

In the Alaska Science Forum account, albino seedlings usually live about a week. That is a general observation in the 1980 article, not a fixed lifespan for every plant or species. Some albino growth can persist longer if it remains connected to a parent that supplies resources.

The same article describes albino seedlings as likely arising from recessive genes, while albino root suckers may result from a mutation in one or more cells. In either case, the key distinction is whether the pale growth can obtain resources from elsewhere: without chlorophyll, a fully independent shoot cannot make its own sugars through photosynthesis.

Ghost pipe survives through fungi, not photosynthesis

Ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora), also called ghost plant, is naturally white and lacks chlorophyll. It is not an ordinary green plant that has recently lost its pigment. Kew describes it as a parasite, “stealing sugars from the mycorrhizal fungi that live within tree roots.” In practical terms, ghost pipe gets sugars indirectly through fungi associated with tree roots.

That dependence is part of its way of life. Kew identifies moist temperate forests with suitable fungi as its habitat, and North Carolina State Extension classifies Monotropa as mycoheterotrophic: it obtains resources through mycorrhizal fungi rather than making sugars by photosynthesis. Kew also notes that most ghost plants are white, with rare records of pink or deep red plants; those color variations do not show that the plant photosynthesizes or that it is an albino mutation.

Albino redwood shoots draw on a green parent

Albino coast redwood shoots (Sequoia sempervirens) provide a different example. A 2018 study found no detectable chlorophyll in the sampled albino foliage, but the shoots can persist while attached to a photosynthesizing mother tree and drawing on its resources. The researchers describe albino foliage as a resource sink, not an independent tree that can sustain itself after separation.

  • Important Info to Consider: During plant transportation, there may be instances of temporary dehydration as well as broken parts. In most cases, plants have the ability to recover. Broken branches can even be used for propagation, giving rise to new plants. Your understanding and patience in this regard are greatly appreciated.

In that study, neighboring green foliage had chlorophyll measurements ranging from 486 to 2,094 mg m−2. That range describes the study’s sampled foliage, not a universal value for redwoods. The paper also reports higher stomatal conductance in albino shoots than in green sprouts and links increased leaf water loss to lower leaf-to-xylem area ratios; this helps explain their water relations but does not change their dependence on the parent tree.

How the three cases differ

Case How it gets resources Relationship to another organism What the whiteness means
Ordinary albino seedling or shoot Cannot photosynthesize in affected tissues; may use stored food, and a shoot may receive resources from a parent. Usually independent as a seedling; a root sucker can remain connected to its parent. An abnormal pigment-deficient condition, not a self-sufficient strategy.
Ghost pipe Gets sugars through mycorrhizal fungi associated with tree roots. Depends on fungi in a woodland system. A naturally non-photosynthetic way of life, not simply an ordinary albino plant.
Albino coast redwood shoot Draws resources from attached photosynthesizing parent tissue. Remains connected to a green mother tree. A chlorophyll-free shoot that is not independently self-sustaining.

White foliage is not enough to diagnose albinism

“White” describes appearance, not cause. Some plants, including ghost pipe, are naturally non-photosynthetic. Pale foliage can also reflect conditions other than albinism; variegation, seasonal color changes, white flowers, and chlorosis should not be treated as interchangeable with a chlorophyll-free albino shoot. Color alone cannot establish the cause.

Can you grow ghost pipe at home?

Ghost pipe is not an easy houseplant. North Carolina State Extension describes cultivation as very difficult: transplanted plants require abundant woodland humus and the appropriate fungi. Ordinary houseplant supplies do not provide that relationship, and adding grow lights does not address the plant’s dependence on fungi for sugars. The documented habitat is moist temperate forest with suitable fungal partners, not a typical indoor growing setup.

What research on albino orchids adds

Kobe University’s 2017 research news describes albino plants of semi-parasitic orchid species that can continue growing and flowering because they depend on fungi. The example reinforces the broader principle: a plant without photosynthetic pigment can persist when it has an alternative route to resources. It does not mean that ordinary albino garden plants can thrive without chlorophyll.
