Airport construction can change more than a terminal entrance. Road lanes, drop-off and pickup curbs, parking entrances, shuttles, public transport, doors, elevators, counters, security queues and walking routes may all move during a project. The only reliable plan is the airport’s current construction notice and map, read together with your airline’s terminal instructions, immediately before you travel.
What can airport construction change?
Airport ground access works as a connected system. Federal Aviation Administration terminal-planning guidance treats approach roads, curbside roadways, recirculation roads, parking, public transportation and wayfinding signs as related parts of that system. A change in one part can therefore affect the others even when the runway and flight schedule are unchanged.

- Approach roads: lanes may be narrowed, shifted, or assigned to different movements.
- Drop-off and pickup: curb zones can move, split by airline or terminal, or operate under temporary traffic controls.
- Parking: a familiar entrance may close while a different entrance, garage, lot, or reservation procedure is used.
- Shuttles and public transport: bus stops, rail connections, pickup islands, and walking links can be relocated.
- Terminal access: doors, elevators, escalators, corridors, and pedestrian bridges may be closed or rerouted.
- Inside the terminal: airline counters, bag-drop areas, security queues, and signs may move even if the building remains open.
These effects depend on the project phase. A notice about a roadway closure does not automatically mean a terminal closure, and an interior renovation does not necessarily affect every curb or parking facility.
How do I check conditions before leaving home?
Use a short, airport-specific check rather than relying on a previous visit or a generic travel-time rule.

- Open the airport’s official construction or travel-alert page. Look for the project phase, effective dates, affected terminal, road, garage, shuttle, and any stated closure windows.
- Open the airport map for your travel date. Confirm the usable terminal entrance, curb, parking access, transit stop, and pedestrian route. Interactive maps may show temporary doors or counters that are not obvious in a standard map application.
- Confirm your airline and terminal. Airline instructions can differ within the same airport. Check whether your carrier uses a different counter, bag-drop area, or drop-off zone during the work.
- Check parking and reservations separately. Read which entrances and lots are open, where shuttles stop, whether a reservation is required, and whether a lot has a height or operating-hours restriction.
- Check public transportation. Verify the temporary stop, transfer path, service hours, and the walking route from the stop to the terminal.
- Review accessibility information. If you need a step-free route, wheelchair assistance, visual guidance, or extra time for a detour, identify the designated route and contact the airport or airline when the instructions are unclear.
- Save the notice and map. Construction information can change between planning and departure. Keep the latest page available on your phone, but follow signs and staff directions if conditions at the site differ.
Airport notices are the controlling source for local conditions. A federal planning document explains how airports design circulation; it is not a live detour notice for your trip.
Where should I get dropped off or picked up?
Do not assume that your usual curb is still assigned to your terminal or airline. A project may close a lane, reverse traffic flow, divide commercial and private vehicles, or move pickup away from arrivals.
Before the journey
- Match the curb to the exact terminal and airline shown in the current airport notice.
- Read whether the location is for drop-off, pickup, or both; many airports separate those movements during construction.
- Check whether a driver must use a holding lot, a short-term garage, or a designated meeting point instead of stopping at the curb.
- Allow for a longer walk if the closest door is closed, and identify an elevator or ramp if stairs are not suitable.
At the airport
Follow temporary lane markings and overhead signs rather than a driver’s memory of the old layout. If a sign conflicts with an app’s suggested route, use the airport’s on-site direction and ask an airport employee. Denver’s construction guidance, for example, tells passengers to use its interactive map, follow posted signs, and ask ambassadors or customer-service agents when doors, counters, or pedestrian routes have moved.

Is airport parking still available?
Parking availability is project-specific. A roadway project can leave a garage open while changing its approach, while a garage renovation can close entrances without affecting the terminal curb.

Questions to answer before driving
- Which lots and garage entrances are open on your travel date?
- Are shuttle stops in their normal locations, and are shuttle hours or loading areas different?
- Can you reserve a space, and does the reservation identify a particular entrance or lot?
- How long will the walk or shuttle ride take from the alternative facility?
- Is there a height limit, payment change, or temporary access restriction?
An Atlanta notice issued in 2025 said access to its South Daily and Hourly Parking Decks would not be affected by that particular roadway change and listed alternative parking options. Those details were tied to that notice and date; they must not be treated as standing conditions for a later trip. Recheck the airport’s current parking page before relying on any lot or entrance.
Does construction mean my terminal or security checkpoint is closed?
No. Construction may affect a route without closing passenger processing, or it may close a specific door while counters and screening remain open. Read the notice for the exact terminal and phase.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s January 9, 2026 FAQ for its Terminal 2 work said all ticket counters and security checkpoint lanes would remain open during the described phase, although passengers might see or hear construction. The airport advised arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international trip. Those arrival times are that airport’s guidance in that FAQ, not a universal construction allowance.
That same FAQ included the statement, “There should be no impact to your next travel day.” It applied to the specific Terminal 2 phase described on January 9, 2026 and does not predict conditions at another airport or a later phase.

How early should I arrive?
There is no reliable, cross-airport number of extra minutes for construction. Use the airport’s and airline’s current instructions, then account for the specific work affecting your route.
When an airport gives a project-specific buffer
Follow it. Atlanta’s March 17, 2026 notice about temporary traffic and shuttle changes advised passengers to allow additional time for drop-offs and pickups. The notice’s advice was connected to those temporary changes, not a permanent Atlanta rule.
When no construction buffer is published
Start with the airport and airline’s ordinary arrival recommendation, then add time for the known detour: a remote parking shuttle, a longer walk, a relocated counter, or a likely queue at a temporary access point. Do not add an arbitrary number and present it as an official requirement. Recheck the notice on the day of travel because a construction phase, lane pattern, or shuttle arrangement can change.

Accessibility routes can change along with ordinary passenger routes. A detour that works for a person using stairs may not work for someone using a wheelchair, walking aid, or stroller, and a temporary elevator can have different hours or a different entrance.

- Read the airport’s accessibility and construction instructions for the current entrance, elevator, ramp, curb, parking shuttle, and security route.
- Tell the airline or airport what assistance you need and when you will arrive. Ask where staff will meet you if the normal meeting point is closed.
- Confirm whether the alternative route is step-free, covered, and usable for your equipment; do not infer those details from a general map.
- At the site, ask an identified airport employee before entering a closed or partially screened area.
Eindhoven’s passenger information describes an alternative route during expansion work and asks passengers with reduced mobility who have not arranged assistance in advance to tell staff at the stairs. That example shows why a temporary route must be checked for suitability rather than assumed to work for every passenger.
How do I navigate a changed terminal interior?
Interior work can relocate the first point you need after entering the building. Look for changes to:
- airline check-in and bag-drop counters;
- security checkpoint entrances and queue starts;
- arrivals meeting points and baggage-reclaim access;
- elevators, escalators, stairs, and accessible toilets;
- corridors connecting concourses, gates, or parking links.
Take a screenshot of the airport’s current map before you leave. Once inside, follow temporary signs even if they send you toward an unfamiliar door. If a counter or corridor is missing, ask an airport ambassador, customer-service agent, or other clearly identified airport employee; Denver specifically directs passengers to those staff during its terminal changes.
How should I compare alternative routes?
When an airport offers more than one way to reach a terminal, compare the routes using the same practical criteria.

| Criterion | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal and airline | Which terminal, counter area, and curb each route serves | A route that reaches the airport may still leave you at the wrong terminal or a closed door. |
| Parking and shuttle | Open lot or garage, entrance, shuttle stop, hours, and reservation requirement | A nominally open lot may require a different approach or a longer transfer. |
| Walking distance | Distance from curb, transit stop, or parking drop-off to the usable entrance | Construction can add time even when the vehicle journey is unchanged. |
| Accessibility | Step-free path, elevator availability, surface conditions, and assistance point | Not every temporary pedestrian route suits every passenger. |
| Operating window | Closure dates, night work, shuttle hours, and any event-related restrictions | A route open in the morning may be restricted during another phase or time period. |
The airport’s current map and notice decide these details. FAA planning guidance is useful for understanding why roads, curbside, parking, transit, and signs must be considered together, but it cannot select a route for a particular departure.
What do recent airport examples show?
Raleigh-Durham: open counters and screening during a stated phase
In its January 9, 2026 Terminal 2 construction FAQ, Raleigh-Durham said ticket counters and security checkpoint lanes would remain open during the phase described. It still told passengers to arrive two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. The example demonstrates that visible work, noise, or temporary routes do not by themselves prove that passenger processing is closed.
Atlanta: temporary roadway and shuttle changes
Atlanta’s March 17, 2026 notice advised extra time for drop-offs and pickups while traffic and shuttle arrangements were temporarily changed. Its 2025 parking notice separately described South Daily and Hourly Parking Deck access as unaffected by that particular roadway change and identified alternatives. Each statement belongs to its own dated notice; neither establishes current conditions beyond the stated period.
Denver: doors, counters, and pedestrian routes can move
Denver’s current construction information lists temporary terminal closures and airline-counter relocations. It directs travelers to an interactive map, posted signs, and staff assistance. This is the pattern to expect when a project changes the building itself: the airline may still operate, but the familiar door or counter may not.
Eindhoven: an alternative route may require staff help
Eindhoven’s passenger page describes an alternative route during expansion work and provides instructions for passengers with reduced mobility, including contacting staff at the stairs when assistance was not arranged in advance. The example reinforces that accessibility planning must be specific to the detour, not inferred from the normal route.
What should I do if the route changes while I am traveling?
- Slow down and follow the temporary signs. Do not enter a barricaded lane, closed door, or construction zone because it was open on a previous visit.
- Move to a safe stopping or waiting area. Drivers should not block an active curb while trying to interpret a detour.
- Ask airport staff for the next usable point. State your airline, terminal, flight time, parking location, and any mobility needs.
- Recheck the airline’s counter or gate information. A terminal route may be open while the counter assignment has changed.
- Build the detour into your remaining time. If you are delayed by a shuttle or closed approach, notify the airline through its official channel and continue following airport instructions.
Do not rely on a third-party map to override a temporary traffic sign. Construction layouts can change faster than mapping services update.
Why do airports coordinate construction routes?
Airport construction must preserve safe passenger movement and emergency access while work proceeds. FAA construction-safety guidance says an airport construction safety plan must describe coordination procedures when work requires emergency-access routes to be rerouted, blocked, and restored. That requirement helps explain why a lane or corridor may be closed even when it appears physically passable: the airport is managing a controlled route around active work and emergency operations.
Quick Recap
What is the practical checklist for travel day?
- Read the airport’s latest construction notice and note its date and affected phase.
- Confirm terminal, airline counter, drop-off curb, pickup point, parking entrance, and shuttle stop.
- Save the current airport map and accessibility instructions.
- Allow the airport’s stated additional time; where none is stated, add time for the specific detour rather than using a universal number.
- Follow temporary signs and lane markings on arrival.
- Ask airport ambassadors, customer-service agents, or other identified employees when a route is unclear.
- For reduced-mobility assistance, verify the step-free route and meeting point before departure.
- Recheck conditions immediately before leaving because construction phases and traffic controls are temporary.
