Air India broke ground on a new maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hangar at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on October 22, 2026. The planned nine-acre complex is designed to handle one widebody and one narrowbody aircraft at the same time, while bringing inspections, cabin work, defect repairs, engineering support and parts storage into one operating site. Air India says this integrated arrangement should shorten aircraft ground time by reducing handoffs and waiting for staff or spares. The airline has not published a target number of hours saved, a completion date, project cost or operating results, so the announcement describes intended benefits rather than proven performance.
How is Air India’s Delhi MRO hangar expected to reduce aircraft downtime?
The project is intended to keep more maintenance tasks and resources in one controlled location. Air India says that centralizing inspections, cabin upkeep and defect rectification will significantly reduce aircraft ground time, but it has not quantified that forecast.

The planned building is specified to accommodate one widebody and one narrowbody aircraft simultaneously. Air India describes it as the first Delhi facility with that combination of capacity. A planned clear height of 25 metres and large column-free spans are intended to accommodate next-generation aircraft.
Engineering, parts and cabin work on site
The announcement lists integrated engineering offices, an on-site spare-parts warehouse and a dedicated cabin shop for interior repairs. Locating technical personnel, inventory and cabin specialists alongside the aircraft could reduce transfer time between separate facilities and allow teams to coordinate inspections and rectification work directly.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
These are Air India’s expected operational benefits, not independently measured results. No baseline turnaround time, projected hours saved, service-level target or post-opening performance data has been released for the Delhi project.
What are the planned dimensions and capacity?
| Project element | Disclosed figure or description | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Site area | 9 acres | Planned area stated by Air India in 2026 |
| Simultaneous aircraft capacity | 1 widebody and 1 narrowbody | Planned hangar design; not an operating throughput figure |
| Clear height | 25 metres | Planned height with large column-free spans |
| Existing Delhi engineering warehouse | 54,000 square feet | Commissioned near Terminal 3 in October 2023 |
| Warehouse inventory capacity | More than 1,000,000 spares | Air India’s reported 2023 capacity for aircraft and ground-support-equipment spares |
The warehouse figures refer to an existing engineering warehouse, not necessarily the new hangar’s on-site store. Air India’s 2026 announcement does not explain how the two locations will be integrated.

- Parts logistics: an on-site warehouse is intended to provide faster access to required spares.
The release does not identify aircraft models, specific maintenance checks, component capabilities, regulatory approvals or the certification scope the hangar will hold. Those details will determine which jobs can actually be completed there.
How does this project fit Air India’s earlier Delhi and Bengaluru plans?
Air India said in September 2024, while announcing its Bengaluru MRO build-out, that it also planned a new Delhi widebody hangar for line-maintenance requirements. The October 2026 announcement describes a broader nine-acre, multi-facility project with simultaneous widebody and narrowbody capacity. The available announcements do not explain whether the scope changed or how the two descriptions relate.
In May 2024, Air India appointed SIA Engineering Company as a strategic partner for Bengaluru base-maintenance facilities. That announcement names Bengaluru as the partnership’s scope; it does not establish SIA Engineering Company’s involvement in the Delhi hangar.

When will the Delhi MRO hangar open?
Air India has announced the groundbreaking but has not disclosed a construction schedule, completion date or operational start date. The October 2026 release also does not name a construction contractor, equipment suppliers or staffing plan. Until those milestones are published, the hangar’s capacity remains a design intention rather than available maintenance capacity.
What is still unknown about cost, performance and certification?
Readers should treat the project as an announced infrastructure build, not a completed operating facility. Air India has not stated:
- the project’s capital cost or funding arrangement;
- the construction completion or commissioning date;
- the aircraft types and maintenance checks to be supported;
- the number of engineers, technicians and other employees;
- the regulatory certifications and approvals;
- the expected or achieved reduction in aircraft ground time.
Those disclosures will be necessary to assess whether the planned layout delivers the faster repairs Air India expects.

What should airlines and passengers watch next?
The most useful indicators after construction will be commissioning approval, the first aircraft work package, published staffing and certification details, and measured turnaround times compared with Air India’s pre-hangar baseline. The relationship between the new on-site store and the existing Terminal 3 warehouse will also show whether parts availability improves in practice.
