After Independent Labs Tested More Than 30 Laundry Detergents, These Are the 8 We Recommend

For most U.S. households, Tide Original Boosted Liquid is the best everyday detergent if you are comfortable with fragrance and dyes. Choose Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release Liquid for difficult grease, sweat, and food stains; Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Liquid for value; all free clear Liquid for a fragrance- and dye-free formula; Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Power PODS for convenience; Tide Original Powder or Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder if you prefer powder; AspenClean Unscented for a plant-based, fragrance-free option; and Woolite All Darks for protecting dark colors.

There is no detergent that is best for every load. Independent testing shows real differences in stain removal, but the right choice also depends on water hardness, washer type, fragrance tolerance, price, fabric care, and whether children can access the product. This guide reviews and synthesizes independent testing programs rather than claiming that we personally tested all of these detergents.

The eight best laundry detergents at a glance

Pick Best for Why it stands out Main limitation
Tide Original Boosted Liquid Most everyday laundry Good Housekeeping named Tide Original its best overall liquid after testing a broad range of common stains and wash temperatures. It is scented and not intended for people seeking a fragrance- and dye-free formula.
Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release Liquid Tough stains and pretreating Consumer Reports found it especially strong on body oil, salad dressing, chocolate, dirt, and pretreating, including in hard water. It costs more than many good alternatives.
Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Liquid Best value Consumer Reports placed it among its top performers and found strong body-oil and salad-dressing cleaning. It is primarily a Costco purchase, and package prices change.
all free clear Liquid Fragrance- and dye-free laundry Reviewed tied it for third place in liquid-detergent stain testing; the manufacturer says it contains no perfumes or dyes. Fragrance-free does not mean that every ingredient is suitable for every person.
Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Power PODS Best detergent pods Consumer Reports rated it the top pod or pack tested, with strong results on body oil, dirt, blood, grass, chocolate, and hard water. Packets cannot pretreat and pose a serious poisoning and eye-exposure hazard if mishandled.
Tide Original Powder or Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder Best powder Consumer Reports identified these as its two highest-rated powders. Powder can be less convenient in cold water, hard water, or for pretreating.
AspenClean Unscented Laundry Detergent Plant-based and fragrance-free priorities Good Housekeeping reported that its liquid formula earned the highest stain-removal score in its test of 28 detergents. Confirm that the package sold today matches the formula evaluated in the test.
Woolite All Darks / Darks Defense Dark colors and fabric care Good Housekeeping recommends it for helping preserve dark colors and reducing fading and pilling. It is not the strongest choice for heavy stains.

How we arrived at these recommendations

The phrase tested over 30 needs context. No single test program in the research tested one identical group of more than 30 U.S. detergents and produced this exact eight-product list. Instead, the recommendations synthesize several independent programs:

  • Consumer Reports maintains ratings for more than 80 current detergents across liquids, pods, powders, and sheets. Its laboratory uses stained fabric swatches, cool-water washes, hard-water testing, and colorimeter measurements.
  • Good Housekeeping says its current program covered 28 detergents and eight stain removers, 336 pounds of laundry, 480 applied stains, and more than 48 hours of machine testing.
  • Reviewed tested dozens of liquid detergents. Its accessible guide was updated April 8, 2025, so its results remain useful comparative evidence but should not be treated as a complete 2026 ranking.
  • Which? tested exactly 30 detergents in a May 2026 U.K. program. Those results are informative about formats and trade-offs, but U.K. formulas, water conditions, labels, and availability do not automatically match the U.S. market.

These programs did not use identical washers, stains, water temperatures, formulas, or scoring systems. That is why the list is organized by household need rather than pretending that a single numerical ranking applies to everyone.

What the laboratories actually measured

Consumer Reports applies stains such as blood, body oil, chocolate, coffee, dirt, grass, and salad dressing to fabric swatches. It washes the swatches twice in front-loading machines using cool water, compares them with swatches washed in water alone, and uses a colorimeter to measure the stain remaining. It also tests in hard water. This is tightly controlled stain-removal work, not a complete simulation of every washer, fabric, soil load, fragrance preference, or long-term effect on clothing.

Good Housekeeping stains cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics with 20 difficult stains, tests warm- and cold-water cycles, and measures reflectance with a Digi-Eye instrument. It also evaluates dispensing, suds, residue, packaging, and consumer impressions. Those extra observations help explain why a detergent can be a good household choice even when stain removal is not its only strength.

Reviewed used a Maytag MVWC565 top-loading washer on a normal, warm-water cycle with standardized eight-pound loads containing pillowcases, towels, and bedsheets. It tested mechanically prepared swatches with sweat, oil, pig blood, red wine, and cocoa, along with dirt, grass, tomato sauce, and additional red-wine stains, then measured results with a photospectrometer after drying.

Which? assessed 30 U.K. products using 17 common stains, white-fabric brightness, color swatches washed 20 times, and sustainability and chemical-composition assessments. Its geography makes it unsuitable as direct proof that a U.S. product or formula will perform identically.

The eight recommendations

1. Tide Original Boosted Liquid: best everyday detergent

Choose it if: You want one widely available liquid for ordinary family laundry, mixed fabrics, body soil, food stains, and routine cold-water washing.

Good Housekeeping named Tide Original its best overall liquid after evaluating stains including oil, gravy, chocolate syrup, coffee, blood, ketchup, grass, and spaghetti sauce in both warm- and cold-water conditions. It is the most broadly useful choice in this guide, not because it wins every possible stain test, but because it combines strong everyday cleaning with easy liquid dosing and pretreatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The product is not exactly the same formula that older articles evaluated. Tide says its Boosted formula began replacing the previous Original formula nationally in September 2025. The company claims the updated product contains 25% more cleaning surfactants and 40% more nonionic surfactant technology than the prior formula. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results, so they should not be confused with Good Housekeeping’s performance findings.

  • Strengths: Strong all-purpose cleaning, convenient pretreatment, broad availability, and useful cold-water performance in independent testing.
  • Limitations: It is not fragrance-free and is a poor fit for readers deliberately avoiding dyes or perfume.
  • HE and dosing: Follow the exact directions on the current bottle and confirm the HE designation on the package. Use the line for the actual load size and soil level rather than filling the cap by habit.
  • Skip it if: Fragrance triggers symptoms, you need a dye-free formula, or your priority is protecting dark clothing rather than maximizing stain removal.

See the current Tide Original Liquid product information before buying because packaging, dose lines, and load counts can change.

2. Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release Liquid: best for severe stains

Choose it if: Your laundry regularly contains sweat, body oil, grease, food, dirt, or stains that ordinary washing leaves behind.

Consumer Reports names Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release its best liquid for most tough stains. In its testing, the detergent performed especially well on body oil, salad dressing, chocolate, dirt, and pretreating, and remained effective in hard water. The ability to apply liquid directly to a stain gives it an advantage over fixed-dose pods.

It is not a miracle product. Even the best detergents do not completely remove every stain, and machine drying can set a stain that was only partly removed. Treat a difficult mark before washing, inspect the garment while it is still damp, and repeat treatment rather than automatically putting it in the dryer.

  • Strengths: Strong performance against greasy and protein-based body soil, good pretreatment, and good hard-water results in Consumer Reports testing.
  • Limitations: Relatively expensive; not the best fit for someone seeking fragrance-free laundry.
  • Use it well: Apply according to the label, allow the product to work as directed, and do not overload the washer.
  • Skip it if: You mostly wash lightly soiled clothing and want the lowest cost per load.

See Consumer Reports’ detergent results for the distinction between overall liquid performance, individual stain types, pretreatment, and price.

3. Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Liquid: best value among strong performers

Choose it if: You have Costco access and want strong cleaning without paying premium-brand prices.

Consumer Reports placed Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean among its top-performing detergents and specifically praised its body-oil and salad-dressing cleaning. That makes it a credible value pick rather than merely the cheapest bottle on the shelf.

Rank #2
Tide Laundry Detergent Liquid, Original Scent, 64 Loads, 80 FL OZ, Works on 100% of Common Stains, Laundry Soap, Liquid Laundry Detergent
  • 6X BOOSTED CLEAN: Tide liquid laundry detergent is engineered to be 4X cleaner and 2X fresher vs Tide Simply liquid detergent
  • TOUGH ON COMMON STAINS: Works on 100% of common stains and has 10X the grease fighting ingredients vs leading bargain detergent
  • CONCENTRATED FORMULA: Less water per drop vs leading bargain liquid detergents provides more cleaning power
  • LONG-LASTING FRESHNESS: Enjoy the original washing detergent scent you love. Made to last all day, Tide liquid laundry detergent provides freshness that you can count on
  • ORIGINAL SCENT FRESHNESS: Original scent helps keep laundry smelling fresh throughout the day

Cost per load must be calculated from the package in front of you. Costco’s current listing identifies a 194-fluid-ounce container as 146 loads. An older Consumer Reports reference put a 194-ounce bottle at about 14 cents per load, but that figure should not be reused as a current price: retailer prices, promotions, package sizes, and load claims change.

Use this calculation:

package price ÷ manufacturer-stated number of loads = cost per load

Record the retailer, package size, date checked, regular price or sale price, and whether the calculation depends on a subscription. A large bottle is not automatically cheaper if the stated load count or dose is different.

  • Strengths: Strong cleaning for body soil and greasy food stains, attractive value when purchased at Costco, and a good option for routine family laundry.
  • Limitations: Costco availability is a real restriction, and the Fresh Scent listing is not a fragrance-free choice.
  • Alternative: Kirkland Ultra Clean Free & Clear is worth comparing if you want the Kirkland format without added fragrance, but do not assume that the regular and Free & Clear formulas perform identically.
  • Skip it if: You do not shop at Costco, cannot store a large container safely, or need a specifically unscented product.

Check the current Costco listing for package and load information.

4. all free clear Liquid: best fragrance- and dye-free choice

Choose it if: You want to avoid added perfume and dyes while retaining a liquid detergent that can be used for ordinary household laundry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reviewed found all Free & Clear tied for third in its liquid-detergent stain-removal testing and left virtually no scent on washed clothing. The liquid itself had a medicinal smell in the bottle, however, demonstrating an important distinction: fragrance-free does not necessarily mean odorless before washing.

The manufacturer says all free clear contains no perfumes or dyes. The company also says the product has EPA Safer Choice recognition and recognition from the National Eczema Association and National Psoriasis Foundation. These are product, certification, and organizational claims; they do not guarantee that every person will tolerate the formula.

  • Strengths: No added perfume or dyes according to the manufacturer, little residual scent, and respectable stain performance in Reviewed’s comparison.
  • Limitations: It is not the top stain remover in this group, and fragrance-free products can still contain ingredients that bother a particular person.
  • HE and dosing: Follow the current package directions and use the smallest labeled amount that matches the load, soil, and water conditions.
  • Skip it if: Your main problem is severe grease or heavy industrial soil and you are willing to trade fragrance-free status for more aggressive stain performance.

EPA’s Safer Choice FAQ explains that certification evaluates ingredients against human-health and environmental criteria and requires certified products to meet performance requirements. Safer Choice is not a medical endorsement and does not mean a product is risk-free for every individual.

5. Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Power PODS: best pods

Choose it if: You value no measuring, compact storage, and a strong formula, and you can keep laundry packets locked away from children and vulnerable adults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consumer Reports rated Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Power PODS its top pod or pack tested. It performed especially well on body oil, salad dressing, and dirt, while also handling blood, grass, chocolate, and hard water well. Good Housekeeping also named Tide Hygienic Clean Power Pods its best overall detergent.

Pods solve a convenience problem, not every cleaning problem. A packet cannot be rubbed into a stain before washing, and its fixed dose may be more than necessary for a small, lightly soiled load or less flexible than liquid for an unusually large, dirty load. Put the pod in the empty drum before adding clothing; Tide’s use instructions provide the product-specific directions.

  • Strengths: Excellent convenience, no measuring, compact transport, and top-tier pod performance in Consumer Reports testing.
  • Limitations: Fixed dose, no pretreatment, packaging and fragrance may not suit every household, and the safety risk is much more serious than with ordinary loose detergent.
  • Skip it if: Small children or cognitively impaired adults can access the laundry area, or if you often need to pretreat individual stains.

6. Tide Original Powder or Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder: best powder

Choose powder if: You value strong dirt cleaning, large economical packages, and long shelf life when the product stays dry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consumer Reports identifies Tide Original Powder and Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder as the two highest-rated powders in its current testing. Tide Original Powder performed strongly on body oils, dirt, blood, and grass. Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder performed very well on body oils, dirt, grass, and blood, including in hard water.

The choice between the two is not a universal winner. Choose the Original version for a straightforward strong powder; consider the Ultra Oxi version when its added stain-fighting approach suits your household and the care labels permit it. Compare the exact package directions rather than assuming that a scoop from one product applies to the other.

Rank #3
Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent, Original Scent, 126 Loads, 158 fl oz, Boosted Clean even in cold water, laundry soap, concentrated liquid detergent
  • 6X Boosted Clean: Tide liquid laundry detergent is 4X cleaner and 2X fresher. This liquid detergent is formulated with 4 additional cleaning active ingredients and 2 additional freshness active ingredients versus Tide Simply liquid laundry detergent
  • Tough stain removal: Tide's laundry soap works on 100% of common stains, for every load every time. Don't settle for "almost clean", get a boosted clean with Tide liquid laundry detergent
  • Grease Cleaning Power: Tide laundry detergent has 10X the grease fighting ingredients versus leading bargain laundry detergent, for those tough to get out grease stains Tide liquid detergent has the power you need
  • Don't pay for water, pay for clean: Tide's concentrated liquid detergent formula has less water per drop versus leading bargain laundry detergents
  • Works on all fabrics: Tide liquid detergent works on all machine washable fabrics and in all cycles and water temperatures, including in cold and quick cycles
  • Strengths: Particularly good on ground-in dirt and clay-like soil, strong test results, potentially economical per load, and no heavy liquid bottle.
  • Limitations: Less convenient for pretreating; powder can dissolve poorly in very cold water or contribute to residue when overdosed, the washer is overloaded, or water is hard.
  • Use it well: Keep the box dry, measure accurately, and follow the package’s water-temperature and HE instructions.
  • Skip it if: You primarily wash greasy stains, use very short cold cycles, or want a detergent that can be applied directly to a stain.

7. AspenClean Unscented Laundry Detergent: best plant-based, fragrance-free option

Choose it if: You want an unscented product marketed around plant-based ingredients and do not want to give up all stain-removal capability.

Good Housekeeping reported that AspenClean’s liquid formula earned the highest stain-removal score in its test of 28 detergents. That is the reason it earns a place here, rather than simply because of its plant-based positioning. Consult the current AspenClean product information for its present ingredient, packaging, and certification claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because formulas and packages can change, verify that the product currently sold matches the formula Good Housekeeping evaluated. A plant-derived ingredient is not automatically safer for every person, stronger on stains, or better for the environment. Evaluate the specific claim being made: unscented, ingredient source, packaging, certification, or something else.

  • Strengths: Unscented positioning, plant-based appeal, and the highest stain-removal score in Good Housekeeping’s 28-detergent test.
  • Limitations: Test results apply to the evaluated formula; current availability, price, and formulation should be checked before purchase.
  • HE and dosing: Confirm the current label’s washer directions, especially if using an HE machine or a concentrated dose.
  • Skip it if: You want a product with a long record of performance across multiple independent programs or the current package cannot be matched confidently to the tested version.

8. Woolite All Darks / Darks Defense: best for dark clothing and fabric care

Choose it if: Your main concern is fading, pilling, and the appearance of dark clothes rather than maximum cleaning of severe stains.

Good Housekeeping recommends Woolite All Darks for helping preserve dark colors. It is designed for both delicate and sturdier fabrics and is a reasonable specialty detergent when your wardrobe contains black, navy, and other dark items that you wash frequently. Woolite says the formula protects against fading for up to 20 washes; attribute that as a manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified guarantee.

The trade-off is clear: Good Housekeeping says it does not tackle tough stains as well as stronger general-purpose detergents. For heavily sweaty workout gear, greasy work clothes, or children’s stained clothing, Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release or another strong general-purpose detergent is a better first choice. See Woolite’s current FAQ for product-specific directions and claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Strengths: Focus on dark-color appearance, fabric care, and reducing fading and pilling.
  • Limitations: Weaker choice for heavy stains; it is not the pick for fragrance-free laundry unless the current label specifically meets that requirement.
  • Use it well: Follow garment care labels, wash dark items inside out when appropriate, and avoid treating a specialty detergent as a substitute for stain treatment.
  • Skip it if: Your clothing is more dirty than delicate or you want one detergent for every household soil.

What about Persil?

Persil Advanced Clean remains an important alternative, especially for readers who value strong liquid-detergent cleaning. In Reviewed’s latest accessible liquid testing, the former Persil ProClean formula removed an average of 2% more stains than Tide. That result should not be used to claim that every current Persil product performs identically.

Persil has rebranded its U.S. ProClean products. Its current U.S. information identifies Everyday Clean, Advanced Clean, and Free & Sensitive lines. Before buying, use the Persil U.S. FAQ and product-selection guide to match the current SKU to the older product name in a review. The exact formula matters more than the brand name.

Liquid, powder, pods, or sheets?

No format wins every category. The American Cleaning Institute explains that liquids are especially useful for greasy or oily soils and pretreating, while powders are often strong on clay and ground-in dirt. Concentrated products require careful dosing, and hard water can reduce cleaning performance and increase residue. The format should follow the way you actually do laundry.

Format Best use Advantages Trade-offs
Liquid Grease, oily soils, pretreating, flexible loads Easy to apply directly to stains, widely available, and easy to adjust for load size. Heavy bottles, drips, sticky caps, and a high risk of overdosing.
Powder Dirt, clay, ground-in soil, economical routine laundry Often economical, has good shelf life when dry, and can come in large packages. Can dissolve poorly in cold water or hard water and is less convenient for pretreating.
Pods Convenience, travel, laundromats No measuring, compact packaging, and often strong formulas. Fixed dose, no pretreatment, and serious ingestion and eye-exposure hazards.
Sheets Lightweight transport and packaging convenience Easy to carry and often sold in paper packaging. Independent testing generally finds weaker stain removal and less precise dosing for large or heavily soiled loads.

Are laundry sheets worth it?

For heavy-stain households, usually not. Consumer Reports says laundry sheets perform below liquids, pods, and powders as a group; even the top-rated Earth Breeze sheets received less-than-satisfactory scores for several common stains. Good Housekeeping similarly found that most sheets did not approach the performance of liquid, pack, and powder detergents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sheets may still be useful for travel, shared laundry rooms, or readers who place a high value on lightweight packaging. But separate the claims: less packaging or shipping weight does not prove better cleaning, lower total environmental impact, safer ingredients, or lower cost. If a weaker product causes rewashing, extra product use, or premature replacement of clothing, its real-world impact may differ from its packaging advantage.

How to choose based on your actual laundry

  • Strongest everyday liquid: Tide Original Boosted.
  • Grease, sweat, and difficult stains: Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release Liquid.
  • Best value when you have Costco access: Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Liquid.
  • No added perfume or dyes: all free clear Liquid.
  • No measuring: Tide Hygienic Clean Power PODS, only with secure storage.
  • Prefer powder: Tide Original Powder or Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder.
  • Plant-based and unscented priority: AspenClean Unscented.
  • Mostly dark clothing and concern about fading: Woolite All Darks.
  • Workout clothes that smell sweaty again after drying: Start with a detergent that performs well on body oil, such as Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release, then correct dosing, wash time, load size, and drying habits before switching products repeatedly.

How to get better results from any detergent

1. Dose from the current label

Do not use a universal cap rule such as filling the cap one-third full. Dose lines differ by brand and concentration. Too much detergent can create excess suds, residue, poor rinsing, and sometimes less-clean clothing. Too little can leave body soil behind. The American Cleaning Institute recommends using the proper amount for the load and product.

Use the package’s guidance for load size, soil level, and water hardness. If you change from a conventional formula to a concentrated one, assume nothing about the old dose.

2. Do not overload the washer

Clothing needs room to move through water and detergent. A tightly packed drum can make a strong detergent appear ineffective because the product cannot reach all surfaces and the rinse cannot remove loosened soil.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Put pods in the empty drum

Place a pod at the back or bottom of the empty drum before loading clothing, and handle it only with dry hands. Do not cut, puncture, unwrap, or place a packet in a dispenser unless the product instructions specifically say to do so. Keep all packets locked away from children and vulnerable adults.

4. Use liquid when pretreating

Liquid is the most flexible format for applying detergent to a stain before the wash. Follow the product directions and test an inconspicuous area when the garment is delicate or colorfastness is uncertain. Do not assume that a strong detergent removes every stain in one cycle.

Rank #4
Tide Powder Laundry Detergent, Original Scent, 125 Loads, 143 oz
  • ATTACKS STAINS: Tide laundry detergent helps remove even 7 day-old stains, making it a powerful laundry soap for all your washing needs
  • ACTI-LIFT CRYSTALS: This laundry detergent powder features Acti-Lift Crystals for enhanced cleaning power
  • AMERICA'S #1: Trust in Tide, America's #1 detergent brand based on sales, for your laundry needs

  • HIGH EFFICIENCY: Specially designed for regular and high efficiency machines - #1 recommended by washing machine manufacturers. This powder laundry detergent is your go-to washing soda

5. Treat blood and other stains before heat

Do not machine-dry a garment while a stain remains. Heat can set some stains and make later removal more difficult. For blood, start with cold water and follow garment-care guidance; University of Georgia Extension explains why heat can set blood stains.

6. Match water temperature to the stain and fabric

Modern detergents are formulated to work in colder water, and cold cycles can reduce energy use. Warm water can speed the removal of some greasy or heavily soiled material when the care label permits it. Cold water is the safer first approach for blood and other protein stains. The garment care label controls the maximum safe temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Account for hard water

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that can interfere with cleaning. Builders in detergent help bind those minerals and keep surfactants available, but hard water can still produce stiff fabrics, residue, and reduced cleaning power. The American Cleaning Institute’s laundry guidance recommends following the product’s water-hardness directions.

If clothes are stiff or waxy, check water hardness, dose, load size, rinse performance, fabric-softener buildup, and whether powder dissolved fully. Do not automatically double the detergent. If problems persist, investigate a water softener or compatible booster and follow the washer manufacturer’s instructions.

Fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, natural, and non-toxic: what those claims mean

Free & clear generally signals that a product is made without added dyes and fragrance, but it does not mean zero potential irritants or that the formula contains very few ingredients.

Fragrance-free means no added fragrance according to the product’s labeling. It does not guarantee that the liquid has no odor; raw ingredients can smell unusual, as Reviewed observed with all Free & Clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hypoallergenic is not a universal guarantee that a product cannot cause an allergic reaction. Compare the ingredient disclosure with known allergens and follow medical advice for eczema, psoriasis, or diagnosed allergies.

Plant-based describes ingredient sourcing, not automatically cleaning strength, safety, or environmental impact. Look for a specific percentage, certification, or ingredient statement rather than relying on the front of the package.

Non-toxic is too broad to be a useful blanket buying standard without defining the exposure, dose, ingredient, and evidence involved. More concrete signals include fragrance-free and dye-free labeling, an accessible ingredient list, and recognized certification. EPA’s Safer Choice database can help verify whether a particular product is currently certified. Certification still is not a promise that every person will tolerate the product.

Special laundry situations

Babies and sensitive children

A detergent marketed for babies is not automatically safer or a better cleaner than a mainstream fragrance-free detergent. Good Housekeeping reports that Dreft cleans well but contains fragrance and suggests considering plant-based, fragrance-free detergent for children with especially sensitive skin. Start with the garment’s care instructions and the family’s known sensitivities, not the word baby on the label.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloth diapers

Do not generalize ordinary cotton-laundry test results to cloth diapers. Follow the diaper manufacturer’s detergent, water-temperature, rinse, and washing instructions. Residue, buildup, water hardness, and sanitization requirements can change the best approach.

Wool, silk, technical clothing, and flame-resistant garments

Use the item’s care label and manufacturer guidance. A detergent that wins a cotton stain-removal test is not automatically suitable for wool, silk, moisture-wicking technical fabrics, or flame-resistant sleepwear.

Workout clothing

Persistent odor is often a body-soil and washing-process problem, not a shortage of fragrance. Use a detergent with good body-oil performance, avoid overloading, wash promptly when possible, use the correct dose, and follow the care label. Extra fragrance can mask odor without removing the compounds that cause it.

What we would not recommend

  • Most laundry sheets for heavily stained loads: current independent testing generally finds weaker stain removal than liquids, pods, and powders.
  • A product chosen only because it smells strong: scent is a preference, not proof that body oil or stains were removed.
  • Any detergent based on an unverified non-toxic claim: identify the actual ingredient, certification, or exposure claim.
  • Pods where locked storage is impossible: the convenience is not worth the preventable packet hazard.
  • A stale price-per-load comparison: recalculate from the current package, load count, retailer, and date.
  • Overdosing to compensate for hard water or poor cleaning: diagnose water hardness, overloading, residue, and cycle selection first.

Bottom line

Buy Tide Original Boosted Liquid for the best all-purpose starting point, or move to Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release when grease and body soil are the recurring problem. Choose Kirkland Ultra Clean for value, all free clear for no added perfume or dyes, Tide Hygienic Clean Power PODS for carefully stored convenience, and Tide Original or Plus Ultra Oxi Powder if you prefer powder. AspenClean Unscented is the plant-based, fragrance-free option with notable independent test performance, while Woolite All Darks makes sense when preserving dark clothing matters more than removing severe stains. Whatever you buy, accurate dosing, appropriate water temperature, enough room in the drum, and safe storage will affect the result as much as the brand name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liquid or powder laundry detergent better?

Neither format is universally better. Liquids are especially useful for grease, oily soil, and pretreating. Powders often perform well on dirt, clay, and ground-in soil. Consumer Reports currently identifies Tide Original Powder and Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder as its two highest-rated powders, while Tide Original Boosted Liquid and Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release are stronger liquid choices for general use and difficult stains.

Do pods clean better than liquid detergent?

Not automatically. Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Power PODS is the top pod or pack in Consumer Reports testing, but pods cannot pretreat and use a fixed dose. A strong liquid may be more useful for a stain that needs direct treatment or for adjusting the amount to a small load.

Are laundry detergent sheets worth buying?

They can be convenient for travel and shared laundry rooms, but current Consumer Reports and Good Housekeeping testing generally finds sheets weaker on common stains than liquids, powders, and pods. Lightweight or paper packaging is not proof of better cleaning or lower total environmental impact.

Is free-and-clear detergent safer for sensitive skin?

A fragrance- and dye-free product may be a sensible first choice for someone avoiding common irritants, but it is not guaranteed to prevent reactions. all free clear’s manufacturer says it contains no perfumes or dyes, and EPA explains that Safer Choice evaluates ingredients and performance; neither is a promise that every individual will tolerate the formula.

Does expensive detergent clean better?

Price and cleaning performance are not identical. Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release is a strong tough-stain performer but relatively expensive, while Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean is a strong value option in Consumer Reports testing. Compare test results and calculate the current cost per load rather than assuming price determines performance.

Does hard water change which detergent is best?

It can. Calcium and magnesium in hard water can reduce cleaning power and contribute to stiffness or residue. Follow the exact detergent instructions for hard water, do not automatically double the dose, and investigate water-softening options if correct dosing and loading do not solve the problem.

Can I use regular detergent in an HE washer?

Use a detergent whose current package specifically indicates HE compatibility and follow its dose instructions. HE washers use less water, so excess detergent can leave suds and residue. Do not assume that products in the same brand family have identical directions; check the exact liquid, powder, pod, or sheet package.

How much laundry detergent should I use?

Use the dose line and instructions on the current package for load size, soil level, and water hardness. There is no reliable universal cap rule because concentrations and dose markings vary. Too much can cause residue and poor rinsing; too little can leave body soil behind.

Should I use a special detergent for babies?

Not necessarily. A baby-labeled detergent is not automatically fragrance-free or medically safer. Check the ingredients and consider a fragrance- and dye-free option if a child has sensitive skin, while following the care instructions for the garments.

What detergent is best for workout clothes?

Choose a detergent with strong body-oil and sweat performance, such as Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release, then focus on correct dosing, prompt washing, an adequately long cycle, and not overloading the machine. Fragrance can mask persistent odor without removing the underlying body soil.

Does cold water really clean clothes?

Modern detergents can work effectively in cold water, and cold cycles can save energy. Warm water may help some greasy or heavily soiled loads when the care label allows it. Treat blood with cold water first, and always follow the garment’s maximum-temperature instructions.

Do I need a separate detergent for dark clothing?

Not always. Woolite All Darks is a reasonable specialty choice when reducing fading and pilling is the priority, but Good Housekeeping says it is weaker on tough stains. A general-purpose detergent is more practical for dark work clothes or heavily soiled garments.
