The Afina A-01 is a fixed, filtered showerhead with one spray setting. NBC Select’s 2026 review found installation straightforward overall and described its square face as delivering a wide stream, but noted that the instructions do not explain how to add the included flow restrictor. The main buying caveats are the single spray pattern, an unresolved inconsistency in filter-replacement timing, and a filtration claim that should not be confused with NSF certification.
Is the Afina showerhead worth it?
The Afina A-01 may suit buyers who want a fixed showerhead with a replaceable filter and broad spray coverage, and who are comfortable with one spray option. It is a less obvious fit for someone who wants adjustable patterns or needs clearly established replacement timing and long-term filter costs before buying.
NBC Select’s 2026 review lists one spray setting and says its reviewer found the square face produced a wide stream with full coverage. The same review reports a 2.5-gallon-per-minute flow rate and an included 1.8-gpm flow restrictor. These are reported product specifications, not a guarantee of the flow or pressure a particular home will experience. NBC Select’s review

Does the Afina showerhead actually filter chlorine?
There is some reported evidence of chlorine reduction, but it comes from a particular test rather than a complete independent evaluation of every contaminant or every installation. WIRED says its out-of-box test reduced total chlorine to undetectable levels, while also noting that independent lab testing was not offered. That result should be read as a test finding under the conditions used, not as proof of broad contaminant removal in all homes. WIRED’s filtered showerhead review
Afina’s product page presents results from a 30-day consumer assessment by Provela Labs. The reported outcomes were self-reported, and the underlying study protocol or report is not available in the material reviewed here. The results therefore do not establish medical benefits or prove that the showerhead causes improvements to skin or hair. Afina A-01 product page

What the certification wording means
Afina says its filter “Exceeds NSF-177 standards.” That is manufacturer wording, not the same thing as a verified NSF certification. NSF/ANSI 177 covers shower filtration systems for aesthetic effects, and the NSF directory search reviewed here did not establish an Afina listing. Buyers seeking certified performance should look for the exact product or company in the official directory rather than treating a standards comparison as certification. NSF’s NSF/ANSI 177 listings
Does it improve water pressure?
NBC Select reports a 2.5-gpm flow rate and an included 1.8-gpm restrictor. The reviewer found the stream broad, but neither that observation nor the listed flow rate establishes that the A-01 will raise pressure in a particular bathroom. Actual shower experience depends on the home’s water supply and plumbing as well as the installed configuration. Afina’s “up to 200% more pressure” wording is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result in the sources cited here. NBC Select’s review Afina product page

This shower head water softener makes showering pleasant and safe. You can enjoy the cleanest shower experience with your family!

How often do you replace the Afina filter?
The published interval is inconsistent. NBC Select’s 2026 review says 90 days, while WIRED’s 2026 review reports a two-month interval. Afina’s science page also uses both two-month and three-month language. Because the sources do not resolve the difference, confirm the current instructions for the exact cartridge and check whether any subscription renews on the same schedule before estimating ongoing cost. NBC Select WIRED Afina’s science page
The 2026 prices reported by the reviewers also depend on the replacement schedule: NBC Select lists $40 without a subscription or $29 with a 90-day subscription; WIRED lists $40 or $29 every two months. Treat these as dated reports, not current guaranteed prices, and verify the subscription commitment and cancellation terms at checkout.

Does the Afina showerhead fit a standard shower arm?
Afina says the A-01 fits standard half-inch U.S. shower connections. The product page also says the package includes a wrench and plumber’s tape. If your existing connection is unusual, damaged, or outside the stated U.S. standard, check compatibility before purchase. Afina product page
Installation note
NBC Select’s reviewer described installation as straightforward overall but said the directions did not explain adding the flow restrictor. The reviewer, Rebecca Rodriguez, wrote: “Because I had installed a few other models already, I knew enough about adding a flow restrictor that I eventually figured it out.” If restrictor configuration matters to you, check the current installation directions or ask Afina for clarification before installation. - MAINTAINS WATER PRESSURE: filtration is designed to work with your existing flow rather than restrict it, so you get cleaner water without a weaker stream
- EASY-SWAP SFC100 FILTER CARTRIDGE: no tools needed, about two minutes to replace; lasts 3-6 months depending on your water quality; replace sooner if lather feels flatter or the chlorine smell returns
- REDUCES CHLORINE, SEDIMENT AND ORGANIC IMPURITIES: also helps to reduce chloramine at lower levels for a short period, thanks to its Vitamin C filter media
- COMPACT, LOW-PROFILE DESIGN: adds about 3-4 inches to your existing shower arm, so your shower head height stays about the same
What should you verify before buying?
- Confirm that one fixed spray setting is acceptable for your household.
- Check the current filter replacement interval, cartridge compatibility, price, and subscription renewal terms.
- Look for an NSF directory listing if third-party certification is important; do not treat Afina’s “Exceeds NSF-177 standards” statement as certification.
- Review the current return and warranty terms. Afina advertises a 90-day money-back guarantee; NBC Select reports a lifetime warranty for customers with an active filter replacement subscription. Verify exclusions and conditions with the seller.
- Confirm the shower connection is the standard half-inch U.S. type specified by Afina.
Afina’s product page lists product and purchase terms, while NBC Select’s review reports the subscription-linked warranty. Terms can change, so rely on the current listing and written terms at purchase.
