Yes—foundational AEC marketing still helps construction firms win work. A 2018 Hinge article in Building Design + Construction argues that newer digital tactics work best when they reinforce six basics: clear staff bios, professionally presented project evidence, useful project descriptions, referrals, organized references, and a permission-based contact list. Together, these assets answer the questions a prospective owner, developer, architect, or facilities leader asks before inviting a firm into a pursuit: Do you understand my problem? Have you solved something similar? Can someone credible vouch for you? How can I keep the conversation moving?

What the six fundamentals do for a construction firm

The six practices are complementary, not competing marketing channels. Each removes a different form of buyer uncertainty.

Fundamental Primary job in business development Evidence a prospect should find
Resumes and bios Establish individual expertise and role clarity Relevant projects, locations, responsibilities, past roles, niche skills, and clearances
Project portfolio photography Make completed work immediately credible and memorable Professional images that show the project and its context
Project descriptions Connect your work to the client’s problem and outcome A concise account of challenge, approach, role, and result
Referrals Transfer trust before a formal introduction Visibility and useful expertise that people can confidently mention
References Give a buyer a relevant person to contact Current clients grouped by service, project type, and market
Contact lists Keep prospects and relationships active over time Shared, permission-based records accessible to the sales team

Use the framework as an operating system for pursuits rather than as a checklist for a brochure. A project page can contain the right photograph, a problem-focused description, the relevant team bios, a reference option, and a follow-up path in one place.

1. Make resumes and bios prove relevant expertise

A generic biography says that someone is experienced. A useful AEC bio shows where that experience was earned, what the person did, and why it matters to this prospect. Buyers often need to assess a proposed team before they know the company well, so make the evidence scannable.

Include the details a pursuit team actually needs

  • Project names and locations: Name recognizable work and identify the city, region, or campus. Location can signal familiarity with local authorities, labor conditions, climate, or delivery practices.
  • Responsibilities: State whether the person led preconstruction, estimating, scheduling, site operations, design coordination, commissioning, safety, or another function. “Worked on” is not a role.
  • Past roles and employers: Show prior positions and firms so a reader can understand the depth of experience.
  • Niche expertise: Identify specialties such as occupied renovations, healthcare infection control, advanced manufacturing, historic work, public procurement, or complex phasing—only when the person can substantiate them.
  • Clearances and credentials: List security clearances, licenses, certifications, and other requirements relevant to the market.
  • Firm attribution: Mark whether each project was completed at your current company or at a former employer. This distinction protects credibility and lets the client judge how directly the firm can reproduce the experience.

Build bios for the audience, not for an internal org chart

For a university laboratory pursuit, lead with laboratory, safety, and occupied-campus experience. For a developer seeking a fast-track industrial building, lead with procurement, schedule control, and commissioning. Keep a complete master resume internally, then create a role-specific version for each submission. Have the named individual verify dates, project scope, title, and attribution before the proposal goes out.

A practical format is a two-sentence positioning statement followed by selected projects with role and location, then credentials and prior experience. Avoid unqualified superlatives; a specific responsibility is stronger than “world-class leader.”

2. Turn project photography into usable proof

Construction buyers cannot inspect every job in person. Strong imagery gives them a fast way to understand workmanship, scale, detailing, and the finished environment. The 2018 guidance recommends hiring a professional photographer who has an architecture portfolio, because architectural work requires control of perspective, light, vertical lines, and context.

Plan the shoot around the buyer’s questions

  • Show the completed building in its setting, not only a close-up of a polished detail.
  • Include interiors, exterior elevations, important transitions, and spaces that demonstrate the project’s purpose.
  • Capture construction-sensitive features—phasing interfaces, restoration details, high-performance systems, or difficult site conditions—when they are safe and presentable.
  • Record captions, project name, location, completion date, photographer, and usage rights at the time of delivery.

Before commissioning new work, ask the project architect, owner, or developer whether existing commissioned images can be shared. Confirm any fee, license, credit line, embargo, or approval requirement in writing. An image that cannot legally be reused in a proposal, website, or social post is not a dependable marketing asset.

Organize images for repeated use

Store high-resolution originals separately from web-sized copies, and attach searchable metadata for market, building type, services, and photographer. Create a small, curated set for each priority market rather than making prospects sift through hundreds of nearly identical shots. Review permissions when ownership, tenants, or security conditions change.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

3. Write project descriptions around the client’s problem

A project description should explain more than what was built. It should let a similar client recognize a challenge and see how your firm addressed it. Pair every major image with a short narrative that covers context, constraints, action, and outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A four-part description structure

  1. Situation: Identify the owner’s objective, building type, location, and important constraints such as an occupied site, a fixed opening date, or a complex stakeholder group.
  2. Challenge: Describe the risk or problem that made the work difficult. Avoid confidential details and do not imply a problem the client did not have.
  3. Response: Explain your specific contribution—preconstruction decisions, sequencing, procurement, coordination, field controls, or quality processes.
  4. Outcome: State the verified result, such as a completed phase, maintained operations, resolved coordination issue, or delivered facility. Use measured figures only when the client has approved them.

Write for the reader’s market. A healthcare prospect needs to see infection-control planning and continuity of care; a public owner may care about transparent procurement and community coordination. One accurate project can support several versions when the emphasis changes without changing the underlying facts.

Protect trust while making the story concrete

Obtain client approval for names, photographs, cost, schedule, and performance claims. Distinguish your firm’s work from that of a joint venture, architect, or former employer. If an outcome is not documented, describe the process rather than inventing a percentage or savings figure.

4. Earn referrals before you need an introduction

Referrals are not limited to former clients. Hinge’s 2018 article says a person who has never worked with your firm may still refer it after seeing useful expertise and a visible point of view. That makes educational content a relationship tool, not merely a traffic tactic.

Make expertise easy to pass along

  • Publish practical explanations of a recurring owner problem, such as phasing an occupied facility or preparing for a difficult procurement route.
  • Use project examples to show decisions and trade-offs rather than issuing broad claims about excellence.
  • Give subject-matter experts a consistent author profile so readers can identify and remember them.
  • Offer a clear way for a reader to contact the appropriate person without forcing a generic inquiry path.

Useful material can be a briefing, webinar, checklist, site-tour debrief, or technical article. Its purpose is to demonstrate judgment that a trusted intermediary can describe accurately. Do not treat every contact as a sales lead or ask people to endorse work they cannot evaluate.

Use registration forms carefully

The article suggests placing some educational material behind a registration form to build an email list. That is a marketing suggestion, not legal advice. Before collecting or sending email, obtain the consent required in the jurisdictions where recipients are located, state what they will receive, provide an unsubscribe method, and keep records of permissions. Offer a genuinely useful resource and avoid making unrelated promotional messages a condition of access.

5. Maintain a reference system that matches the pursuit

A reference list loses value when it contains impressive names but no relevance or current contact. Organize references by service, project type, and market served. A healthcare owner should be able to receive healthcare references for the service being proposed, not a random list of long-ago contacts.

Keep every entry usable

  • Confirm the person’s current title, organization, email, and phone number.
  • Record the project, contract or service provided, and the relationship to your firm.
  • Note topics the person can discuss credibly, such as collaboration, schedule management, occupied operations, or closeout.
  • Ask permission before naming someone in a proposal and give advance notice when a buyer may call.
  • Record the last confirmation date and any restrictions on use.

Hinge’s article recommends updating the list at least quarterly. Treat that as a minimum cadence: a coordinator can send a brief confirmation request, remove bounced addresses, and flag contacts who have changed roles. A reference who has moved organizations may still be valuable, but the proposal must describe the relationship accurately.

6. Put the contact list in a shared CRM

The contact list is the infrastructure connecting bios, content, referrals, references, and follow-up. The article recommends CRM software rather than relying on an accounting system or a spreadsheet, because the sales team needs a shared view of relationships and activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimum fields for an AEC contact record

  • Person, organization, role, market, and geography
  • Relationship owner and other internal stakeholders
  • Projects, services, and pursuits associated with the contact
  • Referral source and relevant mutual connections
  • Last interaction, next action, and follow-up date
  • Email permission status, source of consent, and opt-out history
  • Reference eligibility and any usage restrictions

Choose a system the team will actually use

When evaluating CRM software, prioritize shared access, role-based permissions, duplicate control, import and export capability, activity history, reminders, reporting, and integration with the tools your pursuit team already uses. Ask whether the system can separate a company, its offices, and individual contacts; associate one person with multiple projects; and preserve consent records. A feature-rich platform that nobody updates is less useful than a simpler system with clear ownership and routine data hygiene.

How the fundamentals work together in a pursuit

Use the six assets as a sequence when a target opportunity emerges:

  1. Frame the need: Identify the client’s market, problem, delivery model, and decision-makers in the CRM.
  2. Select proof: Pull two or three relevant projects with approved images and descriptions that address the stated problem.
  3. Assemble the team: Choose bios showing comparable roles, locations, credentials, and clearly attributed experience.
  4. Add trusted voices: Select references by market and service, confirm permission, and brief them on the likely topics.
  5. Plan the next contact: Record the introduction, permission status, owner, and next action so follow-up does not depend on one person’s inbox.

This process also exposes gaps early. If no project has an approved image, no bio shows the required clearance, or no reference fits the market, the firm can fix the gap before the shortlist is due.

What Hinge’s 2018 figures do—and do not—prove

The article reports several Hinge figures that explain its emphasis on visibility and expertise. It says more than two-thirds of AEC buyers seek high-visibility experts because buyers may lack the relevant internal expertise. It also reports that 81.5% of buyers had received a referral from someone they had never worked with, and that 94.5% of referrals were attributed to a firm’s reputation, expertise, or visibility, compared with 5.5% attributed to someone who had previously met the firm.

Those numbers are findings as presented by Hinge in the July 10, 2018 article, not a 2026 industry benchmark. The page does not provide the underlying study’s methodology or citation, so use the figures to understand the article’s argument—not to forecast conversion rates or promise a result. Current performance should be measured with your own qualified-opportunity, referral, and pursuit data.

A maintenance plan that keeps the system credible

Cadence Action Owner
After each completed project Collect approved images, confirm attribution, write the problem-and-outcome description, and tag the project by market and service. Marketing with project leadership
Monthly Review new contacts, next actions, bounced emails, and duplicate records. Business development or CRM administrator
Quarterly Confirm reference availability, titles, contact details, permissions, and usage restrictions. Marketing and account owners
Before each proposal Verify every bio, project claim, photograph license, reference, and consent record used in the submission. Pursuit manager
Annually Retire outdated images and bios, review priority markets, and assess which educational topics generate qualified conversations. Marketing and leadership

Common failure modes and fixes

  • Inflated experience: Listing a former employer’s project as current-firm experience undermines trust. Label the employer and the person’s actual role.
  • Beautiful but irrelevant portfolio: Replace generic glamour shots with images and descriptions tied to the prospect’s building type, constraints, and outcome.
  • Unapproved imagery: Secure written usage rights and required credits before publication or proposal use.
  • Stale references: Confirm contacts quarterly and alert them before a buyer calls.
  • Spreadsheet isolation: Move relationship data into a shared CRM with ownership, next actions, and permission fields.
  • Content without a follow-up path: Give readers a relevant contact and record consent rather than adding people to an unsolicited mailing list.
  • Unverifiable claims: Use documented outcomes, approved figures, and precise descriptions instead of unsupported rankings or savings.

Further reading for AEC professional-services marketing

Basil Sawczuk’s Marketing and Selling Professional Services in Architecture and Construction (ISBN 9781405181877) is a 288-page paperback published in 2009 for architects, engineers, project managers, facilities managers, surveyors, and contractors. It is useful background on professional-services marketing, but its publication date means readers should pair it with current privacy requirements, CRM practices, and digital-channel policies.

The practical takeaway

New channels do not replace the proof system behind a construction firm’s reputation. Keep bios precise, show completed work with permissioned images, explain the client problem and outcome, make expertise easy to refer, maintain relevant references, and give the sales team a shared contact record. That foundation makes every newer tactic more credible and gives a prospect a clear reason—and a safe way—to take the next step.
