An acoustically transparent (AT) projection screen lets sound pass through the image so the left, center, and right speakers can sit behind it. That places dialogue near the actors’ mouths and creates a cinema-style front soundstage. The trade-off is that every screen fabric changes sound and light to some degree, so the right choice depends on speaker geometry, projector brightness, seating distance, room depth, and whether you choose woven or perforated material.

What an acoustically transparent screen solves

A conventional opaque screen forces the center speaker below, above, or beside the picture. That can pull dialogue away from the actors and restrict screen size. An AT screen allows the center channel to sit close to the image’s vertical center, with the left and right speakers aligned behind the same surface.

  • Dialogue appears to come from the people speaking.
  • Left-center-right imaging remains consistent across a wide picture.
  • Large speakers and subwoofers can be hidden behind a false wall.
  • Very wide or tall screens become easier to integrate visually.

AT is most valuable in a dedicated theater, a large screen installation, or any room where a center speaker below the image would be noticeably low. It is usually unnecessary for a small television-style room, a soundbar, a shallow wall, or a layout where the center speaker already sits at the correct height.

How AT screen materials work

Woven and knitted screens

Woven material passes sound through spaces between threads. Thread diameter, openness, coatings, backing, tension, listening angle, and the air gap behind the screen all affect performance. Woven surfaces often avoid a discrete hole pattern and can provide smooth, benign acoustic behavior, but the weave may become visible at close seating distances.

Seymour describes Center Stage XD as having 1,739 holes per square inch and reports approximately 1.4 dB average attenuation above 2 kHz. Those are manufacturer specifications for that material, not universal woven-screen performance (Seymour specifications).

Perforated and microperforated screens

Perforated screens use holes in a solid surface; microperforated versions use smaller, more numerous holes to reduce visible patterns and acoustic side effects. Hole diameter, spacing, pattern, orientation, and the distance to the speaker determine the result.

Stewart says its MicroPerf X² uses a diamond pattern with more than 30,000 perforations per square foot and holes of about 0.020 inch. That is a product-specific claim, not a definition of every microperforated screen (Stewart MicroPerf information).

Woven versus perforated: the practical choice

Criterion Woven or knitted Perforated or microperforated
Acoustics Often smooth and less reflective, but fabric-specific Can attenuate or reflect treble; equalization may be useful
Image texture Weave can show at close range Holes or moiré can show if pitch and projector geometry conflict
Gain Commonly unity or below Some designs offer higher gain or directionality
Ambient light Usually limited unless specially engineered Some gray or ALR designs improve brightness in controlled geometry
Speaker distance May allow relatively close placement, subject to the maker’s instructions Often needs a meaningful air gap to limit reflections and comb filtering
DIY practicality Generally straightforward to staple or attach Needs careful orientation, tension, and projector matching
Typical fit Dark theaters, close seating, audio priority Large screens, gain requirements, or cinema-style installations

Neither construction is universally superior. Seymour argues that woven materials reduce perforated-vinyl attenuation and comb filtering (Seymour comparison), while Stewart argues that engineered perforation can deliver excellent image and acoustic results (Stewart comparison). Material measurements and installation geometry matter more than the label.

Audio compromises you must plan for

Treble attenuation

Openings and surface structure usually affect high frequencies more than bass. The audible result can be duller dialogue or less air, and the effect can vary by seat. An independent 2023 study of six professional and 13 general-purpose fabrics measured transmission losses from roughly 0.1 to 5 dB, with reflected sound also varying substantially between fabrics (independent screen-fabric measurements). Test tension, frequency range, backing, angle, and speaker distance before comparing numbers.

For one example, Screen Innovations lists Unity AT’s peak attenuation as 6 dB at 20 kHz and says the main effect begins around 1–2 kHz. Unity AT is currently marked discontinued, so treat those figures as a legacy specification rather than a buying recommendation (Unity AT specification).

Reflections and comb filtering

Sound can pass through perforations, reflect from a speaker baffle or rear wall, and return through the screen after a delay. The direct and delayed sound may cancel or reinforce at different frequencies, producing seat-to-seat variation. Equalization can correct broad tonal loss but cannot remove every position-dependent interference pattern.

Speaker distance is material-specific

Do not apply a universal four-inch or one-foot rule. Stewart generally recommends about one foot behind its MicroPerf products (Stewart placement guidance), while its Harmony G3 announcement says speakers can be as close as one inch behind that woven material (Harmony G3 announcement). Follow the exact installation sheet for the material you buy.

Backing and the front wall

Light-colored speakers and walls behind an open screen can reduce contrast by reflecting projected light back to the viewer. Dark, nonreflective treatment usually helps, but a backing layer can also reduce acoustic transparency. Stewart specifically warns that close-coupled black backing can interfere with some microperforated designs (Stewart backing guidance). Darken the cavity and speaker fronts where practical, then use only the backing arrangement approved for the screen.

Image performance and projector requirements

Gain and brightness

AT material can have lower gain than a solid screen, so calculate brightness using calibrated projector lumens, image area, gain, throw distance, lamp or laser age, ambient light, and whether you watch HDR or 3D. A higher-gain surface may brighten the center seats but narrow the viewing cone or create hotspotting.

  • Seymour Center Stage XD is published around 1.2 gain, with some larger-screen descriptions giving 1.0.
  • Elite AcousticPro UHD is listed at 1.0 gain, with a stated 180-degree viewing angle and approximately -2.36 dB mean attenuation.
  • Elite AcousticPro 4K is listed at 1.1 gain and -3.06 dB mean attenuation from 8 to 20 kHz.

These vendor figures use different methods and are not directly interchangeable (Elite comparison table).

Resolution, weave, holes, and moiré

“4K-ready” or “8K-ready” does not guarantee a texture-free image. Pixel pitch, projector sharpness, screen size, seating distance, material pitch, orientation, lens characteristics, and throw geometry determine whether you see weave, holes, or moiré.

Elite lists AcousticPro UHD as compatible with 4K/8K projection but specifies a 1.3Ă— image-width minimum throw and no ultra-short-throw compatibility (Elite material data). Before ordering, view a sample from the closest seat with the intended projector and display fine grids, text, and bright uniform fields.

Projector compatibility

Most AT products discussed here are front-projection materials. Confirm the projector’s throw ratio and lens-shift range, and do not assume compatibility with ultra-short-throw, very short-throw, rear-projection, or unusually bright close-range systems. UST geometry is particularly likely to expose screen-pattern artifacts.

Designing the speaker cavity and screen wall

Measure more than the screen width. Reserve depth for the frame, speaker cabinets, stands, acoustic treatment, subwoofer clearance, cable routing, ventilation, and service access. A false wall is often safer than placing speakers directly against the fabric.

  • Place the center speaker as close as practical to the image’s vertical center and aim it at the main seats.
  • Toe-in the left and right speakers as the room and speaker design require.
  • Keep ports, cooling vents, and amplifier access unobstructed.
  • Treat the front wall with dark, nonreflective surfaces and suitable absorption.
  • Prevent nearby subwoofers from vibrating the frame or fabric.
  • Measure and equalize with the screen installed, not with it temporarily removed.

Which type fits your room?

Dark dedicated theater

Start with a neutral woven material when seating is close and high-frequency accuracy is the priority. Its lower or unity gain is less problematic in a light-controlled room.

Large screen or commercial-style room

Consider perforated or microperforated material when extra gain, a very large image, or established cinema construction is important. Confirm hole visibility, speaker distance, and projector compatibility first.

Bright multipurpose room

An AT material marketed for gray or ambient-light use may help, but acoustic transparency, gain, viewing angle, and color uniformity can conflict. Screen Innovations lists Slate AT and other materials, while availability and current specifications should be confirmed through a dealer (Slate AT; Pure AT).

Ultra-short-throw projector

Choose a solid screen or an AT material explicitly engineered and tested for that lens. Do not assume a standard woven screen will work; Elite identifies AcousticPro UHD as standard-throw only.

Limited depth or correctly placed center speaker

A solid fixed-frame screen is usually the better value when the room cannot accommodate a cavity or the center speaker already sits at the correct height.

DIY, motorized, and solid-screen alternatives

DIY AT screen

A separate fabric and rigid frame allows custom dimensions and can reduce cost. It also makes tension, orientation, backing, frame flex, shipping, and returns your responsibility. Fabric pricing is not the finished-screen price.

Motorized AT screen

Motorization adds concealment and convenience but introduces roller tension, curl, waves, mechanical service, and higher cost. A fixed frame is generally the safer choice for maximum flatness and image uniformity.

Solid screen with an external center speaker

This is often preferable when the room is shallow, brightness and ambient-light performance matter most, or the center channel can sit immediately below the image without an obvious localization error.

Spandex or speaker cloth

Low-cost fabrics may pass sound but are not automatically projection materials. Stretch, texture, gain, contrast, durability, fire performance, and projector compatibility may be uncontrolled. Treat them as experimental DIY options, not equivalent replacements for measured screen fabric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes

The image is too dark

Likely causes include low gain, an oversized image, HDR demands beyond the projector, ambient light, or reflective room surfaces. Reduce image size, improve light control, increase calibrated projector output, or reconsider the material.

Dialogue sounds dull

Measure with and without the screen, verify speaker distance and aiming, inspect the backing and cavity, and apply room correction only after the screen is installed. If the loss remains unacceptable, compare another material sample.

Moiré, weave, or holes are visible

Increase throw or seating distance, follow approved orientation instructions, adjust projector position, reduce image size, or select a finer weave or different perforation pattern. A sample test is more reliable than a resolution label.

Contrast is disappointing

Darken the cavity and speaker fronts, control ambient light, and follow the manufacturer’s backing recommendation. Adding an unapproved layer can worsen both contrast and sound.

Terminology that prevents a costly mistake

An “acoustically transparent projection screen” is a front-projection surface that passes sound to speakers behind it. A “transparent display” is a display panel designed to pass light or imagery. Acoustic grille cloth and generic speaker fabric are not automatically suitable for projection. A conventional OLED, LCD, or television cannot simply be made AT without redesigning the display.
