Acoustic Glass vs. Secondary Glazing for Reducing Aircraft Noise: Which Should You Choose?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither acoustic replacement glazing nor secondary glazing is a universal winner for aircraft noise. The better choice depends on where noise is entering, the condition and geometry of the existing window, the performance of the complete installed assembly, ventilation requirements, and any planning or conservation restrictions. Aircraft noise contains significant low-frequency energy, so a window should be specified using transportation-noise evidence rather than a glass-only claim.

Start with a survey of the whole façade and ask for tested or professionally specified performance for the exact window system and installation. Replacement glazing is usually investigated when the existing frame or opening cannot accommodate a retrofit. Secondary glazing is often attractive when the original window must remain, including some heritage properties, provided there is enough reveal depth for a properly sealed second frame.

What the two options actually change

Acoustic replacement glazing

Acoustic replacement glazing removes the existing window or glazed unit and installs a new window assembly designed for improved sound insulation. Depending on the project, that can mean a new frame and sash, a replacement sealed unit in a retained frame, or a complete replacement window. The acoustic result belongs to the complete assembly: panes, cavities, spacers, seals, frame, opening, and installation.

Replacement can also address problems that prevent a retrofit from working. FAA airport sound-insulation guidance identifies frame size, wall depth, deterioration, and an out-of-square opening as reasons a replacement may be appropriate when a retrofit cannot fit the existing structure.

Secondary glazing

Secondary glazing adds a separate glazed frame inside or outside the existing window. The original window remains in place, while the new frame, air space, seals, and installation details create a second barrier. It can be a practical way to improve an older window without removing fabric that a building owner needs to preserve.

The separation is part of the design, not an incidental gap. Gatwick Airport Limited’s August 2024 noise-insulation scheme says its secondary glazing will generally use a separate frame at least 100 mm from the external glazing, subject to the individual property’s design. That is a project example, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of a particular reduction.

Why aircraft noise needs a different comparison

Aircraft events combine broadband sound with substantial low-frequency content. A rating that describes ordinary airborne speech noise does not automatically predict how a room will respond to overflights. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) distinguishes between two commonly encountered measures:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • STC (Sound Transmission Class) is widely used for airborne sound attenuation and is strongly associated with speech intelligibility. It can be useful for comparing products tested on the same basis, but it is not specifically a transportation-noise rating.
  • OITC (Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class) is intended to indicate outdoor-to-indoor reduction for transportation noise and is useful when low-frequency noise is important. For aircraft exposure, ask whether OITC data are available and whether the test assembly is comparable with the proposed installation.

European suppliers may instead provide weighted sound-reduction values such as Rw with spectrum terms. For example, Gatwick’s 2024 scheme specifies Rw+Ctr ≥ 35 dB for acoustic double glazing in noise-sensitive rooms in its Inner Zone, measured to BS EN ISO 10140-2:2021. This is a requirement for that airport project, not a general target, a universal recommendation, or evidence that a particular product will deliver the same result in another building.

Always compare like with like: the same metric, test standard, frequency range, specimen type, and installation assumptions. A higher number from a different test basis may not represent better aircraft-noise performance.

Assess the entire sound path before choosing a window

FAA Advisory Circular AC 150/5000-9B, issued June 8, 2022, states that noise can enter through “multiple points such as windows, doors, cracks, walls, roofs, ventilators, and chimneys.” A window upgrade can therefore disappoint when another opening is the dominant path.

Acoustic glass versus secondary glazing: decision table

Decision axis Acoustic replacement glazing Secondary glazing
What changes The existing window or glazed unit is replaced with an acoustic-rated assembly. A second glazed frame is added while the original window remains.
Typical reason to investigate it The opening or frame needs replacement, the existing construction is deteriorated, or a retrofit cannot physically fit. Retaining the original window matters, replacement is unsuitable, or a designed paired-window system can be installed.
Evidence to request Tested acoustic performance for the complete proposed window, including frame, glazing, seals, and installation details; request transportation-noise metrics where relevant. Tested or professionally specified performance for the paired system, including the air-space dimension, seals, operating configuration, and installation.
Principal fit constraints Frame dimensions, opening condition, wall depth, weather exposure, appearance, thermal and solar properties, installation access, and applicable codes. Available reveal depth, opening geometry, access to operate both windows, cleaning space, condensation control, ventilation, and heritage or design requirements.
What neither option fixes automatically Noise entering through doors, walls, roofs, vents, cracks, or other parts of the envelope; poor sealing can also undermine either system.

The available evidence does not establish a controlled, universal head-to-head test proving that one option always performs better. The comparison must be made using the actual proposed assemblies and their installation details.

When acoustic replacement glazing is the better fit

The existing frame or opening is unsuitable

Replacement deserves priority when timber or metal frames are badly deteriorated, the opening is out of square, the wall depth cannot accept a secondary frame, or the existing assembly cannot be made airtight. FAA guidance notes that retrofit depends on whether the material can fit the existing structure; replacement is appropriate where retrofit is impracticable for these kinds of reasons.

You need one coordinated window system

A new window can combine acoustic, thermal, solar-control, security, weather, and ventilation requirements in one designed assembly. That can simplify operation and cleaning compared with managing two independently moving windows. It also avoids losing usable reveal depth to an internal secondary frame.

The installation can be renewed at the same time

If the surrounding opening needs repair, replacement allows the installer to correct packings, perimeter joints, sills, and frame-to-wall interfaces as part of one scope. Specify how the old frame will be removed, how the opening will be made good, and how the new frame will be sealed on all sides.

What to verify before ordering

  • The quoted acoustic value applies to the complete window, not only to a pane sample.
  • The report identifies the test standard, specimen dimensions, frame type, opening method, and glazing configuration.
  • The metric is suitable for aircraft or other transportation noise; ask specifically about OITC or an equivalent low-frequency-sensitive basis where available.
  • The proposed frame fits the actual wall depth and opening, including tolerances and reveals.
  • Thermal, solar-gain, safety-glazing, fire, escape, and planning requirements are addressed alongside acoustics.

When secondary glazing is the better fit

The original window must remain

Secondary glazing can preserve an original frame, sash, moulding, or façade appearance that would be lost through replacement. Gatwick Airport Limited’s 2024 scheme explicitly provides secondary glazing where replacement acoustic double glazing is unsuitable, including some listed buildings. Its eligibility and design rules apply to that airport project and should not be treated as a general heritage standard.

The reveal can accommodate a separate frame

Measure the clear depth, sill projection, side returns, and head detail before selecting a system. The Gatwick example generally places the secondary frame at least 100 mm from the external glazing, but another property may require a different arrangement. The important question is whether the designed gap, frame, seals, and opening method can be installed without obstructing operation or creating inaccessible voids.

You can maintain and ventilate both layers

Two windows create two sets of handles, seals, drainage paths, and cleaning surfaces. Specify how each leaf will open, how the cavity will be cleaned, and how condensation will be monitored. A secondary frame that cannot be reached for maintenance can turn a sound-insulation measure into a long-term moisture and usability problem.

What to verify before ordering

  • The supplier or acoustician has specified the paired-window system, not just the added pane.
  • The documentation states the separation distance, frame construction, seals, and whether the original window is open or closed during testing.
  • Both frames can be operated safely and the new frame does not block emergency egress where an opening window is required.
  • Condensation, drainage, trickle ventilation, and cleaning access are included in the design.
  • Listed-building, conservation-area, leasehold, or planning requirements have been checked before fabrication.

How to obtain comparable evidence

  1. Describe the aircraft exposure. Record the rooms affected, the façade orientation, typical event times, whether noise is continuous or intermittent, and whether vibration or rattle is also present.
  2. Commission or request a sound-path assessment. Include windows, doors, walls, roof elements, vents, chimneys, cracks, and service penetrations. Ask for field measurements where the dominant path is uncertain.
  3. Define the comparison basis. Ask each bidder for OITC where available, or for Rw plus relevant spectrum terms and the test standard used. Do not compare a glass-only laboratory value with a whole-window result.
  4. Demand assembly documentation. Obtain the complete window or paired-window specification: frame, pane make-up, cavity, seals, opening style, dimensions, mounting method, and perimeter-joint details.
  5. Check installation assumptions. Confirm whether the reported result assumes a particular substrate, airtight interface, closed vents, or a specific sealant. Require the installer to state how those conditions will be achieved on site.
  6. Compare non-acoustic consequences. Review appearance, operation, cleaning, thermal performance, solar gain, safety, weathering, ventilation, maintenance, and access before selecting the nominally higher rating.
  7. Get a written scope and acceptance plan. It should identify the rooms and openings included, preparation and making-good, sealant and flashing details, ventilation provisions, and how defects or failed seals will be corrected.

Sealing and ventilation are part of the acoustic design

FAA guidance lists proper caulking and sealant among window noise-reduction considerations. A high-rated unit with a continuous perimeter leak can perform far below its laboratory result. The installation scope should cover the frame-to-wall joint, corners, sills, head, jambs, service penetrations, and any junction where air can bypass the glazing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consumer window weatherstripping or compression seals may help with an obvious movable-sash gap, but no quantified aircraft-noise reduction is established for such products. Treat them as a minor supporting repair, not as a substitute for correctly specified glazing, a sound frame, and professional installation.

Do not solve leakage by unintentionally eliminating required fresh air. FAA guidance advises routing outside air primarily through the ventilation system rather than relying on leakage through the envelope. Review local building and energy codes, combustion-air requirements, indoor-air-quality provisions, and any planning conditions before sealing or relocating vents. A ventilation strategy may involve a dedicated mechanical system, acoustic ventilator, or another compliant arrangement; the correct choice depends on the building.

Installation details that determine the result

Continuity of the airtight layer

Specify which layer is intended to be airtight and how it connects to the surrounding wall. For secondary glazing, the original window and the added frame must be considered together; a gap around either frame can become a bypass route.

Frame and glazing compatibility

Glass performance can change when incorporated into a window because of frame design and material, the glazing and mounting method, and airtightness. ISO 22897:2023 explains why glass-only information cannot be assumed to represent the complete window. Ask for data on the actual frame and mounting arrangement.

Operation and maintenance

Confirm handle positions, opening clearances, restrictors, cleaning access, drainage, replacement of failed sealed units, and access for future sealant repairs. Secondary systems require particular care because the original and new windows may need to be opened independently.

Weather and water management

Acoustic work must not compromise flashing, sill drainage, weep paths, or weather seals. A frame that is acoustically tight but allows water into the wall is not a successful installation.

Heritage, planning, and building constraints

Retaining an original window can be decisive in a listed building or conservation area, but “secondary glazing” is not automatically permitted. Check the building’s designation, local planning policy, landlord or lease conditions, and any airport or grant scheme rules before design work begins.

Replacement may also require approvals where the façade appearance changes, the opening is altered, or safety and fire provisions are affected. The acoustic specification should be coordinated with structural, thermal, ventilation, escape, and weatherproofing requirements rather than submitted as a standalone glass choice.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by pane thickness alone

Pane thickness, laminated interlayers, and cavity size can influence performance, but they do not describe the installed window. Request whole-assembly evidence and the test conditions behind the number.

Using STC as if it were an aircraft guarantee

STC is a general airborne-sound rating associated with speech. For transportation noise and low frequencies, ask for OITC or another metric that reflects the relevant spectrum, then compare equivalent test bases.

Ignoring other façade paths

Upgrading one window while leaving a leaky door, roof vent, chimney, wall junction, or crack can leave aircraft events largely unchanged. Survey first and rank interventions by the sound entering through each path.

Assuming the Gatwick figures apply everywhere

The Gatwick scheme’s Rw+Ctr ≥ 35 dB target and generally 100 mm secondary-frame separation are dated, project-specific requirements from 2024. They are useful examples of how a scheme can specify performance, not universal design rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sealing without a ventilation plan

Removing incidental draughts can affect indoor air quality and combustion safety. Coordinate airtightness work with a compliant ventilation design and local code checks.

A practical selection checklist

  • Has the dominant aircraft-noise path been identified by inspection or measurement?
  • Are the window quotes based on complete assemblies rather than panes alone?
  • Are the metrics and test standards comparable and relevant to transportation noise?
  • Can the proposed frame, cavity, seals, and opening method physically fit?
  • Will the intervention preserve required escape, daylight, ventilation, drainage, and weather performance?
  • For secondary glazing, is there adequate reveal depth and access to operate and clean both windows?
  • For replacement, is the existing opening sound enough to receive the new frame, or does it require repair?
  • Are heritage, planning, landlord, airport-scheme, and building-code requirements documented?
  • Does the installation scope include perimeter sealing and making good?
  • Is there a maintenance plan for seals, hardware, drainage, condensation, and future glass replacement?

Bottom-line decision

Choose acoustic replacement glazing when the existing frame or opening is deteriorated, cannot accept a retrofit, or a coordinated new assembly is the most practical way to achieve airtightness and other building requirements. Choose secondary glazing when retaining the original window is important or replacement is unsuitable, and a properly designed, separated, maintainable second frame can fit.

In either case, make the decision from whole-window evidence and a sound-path assessment, not from the name “acoustic glass” or the presence of an extra pane. The most defensible specification is the one that documents the actual assembly, uses a transportation-noise-aware metric, preserves compliant ventilation, and addresses every significant route by which aircraft sound reaches the room.
