The latest reported targets for Aberdeen’s Baird Family Hospital and ANCHOR Cancer Centre are December 2026 for ANCHOR and September 2027 for Baird to start receiving patients. Those dates were reported on 8 June 2026, alongside a warning that further delay was possible; they are not confirmed current targets for October 2026. The available sources also do not establish that GRAHAM is the main contractor or that delays have affected a specific number of GRAHAM jobs.
What are the reported opening targets?
BBC News reported on 8 June 2026 that NHS Grampian had moved ANCHOR’s target from July to December 2026, and Baird’s target for starting to receive patients from June to September 2027. The report said further delays remained possible. No source available for this article confirms whether either target still holds as of October 2026 or whether either facility has opened.

The dates also describe different milestones: ANCHOR’s reported target was an opening, while Baird’s was the start of receiving patients. They should not be treated as a single project-wide completion date.
What services are the two facilities intended to provide?
Baird Family Hospital
The Scottish Government’s August 2025 progress update describes Baird as a planned centre for maternity and neonatal care, reproductive health, breast care, theatres, research and teaching. These services make the facility distinct from ANCHOR, even though the two developments are linked.

ANCHOR Cancer Centre
The same update describes ANCHOR’s role in oncology, haematology and radiotherapy. The centre is intended to provide cancer services alongside the wider Foresterhill campus.
Why is the project at risk of further delay?
The Scottish Government’s August 2025 update said design-review changes were still being implemented and that their effects on programme timing and cost were still being assessed. That is an official indication that design changes remained relevant to delivery, rather than a final explanation of every subsequent delay.

Aberdeen Business News reported on 9 June 2026, summarising NHS Grampian board papers and project comments, that unresolved technical and commercial matters could affect the programme. Its account identified water-system contamination risk and design and commissioning work, as well as mould, ventilation problems, design revisions and unresolved electrical and ventilation issues. It also reported that an independent external team was being added to strengthen scrutiny of delivery, risk and safety.

The report quoted NHS Grampian Interim Director of Infrastructure Jug Johal acknowledging the potential for further delay and cost increases if technical problems arose, while saying the aim was to deliver within the then-stated £438 million budget. That was an expressed aim, not a guarantee or a confirmed final cost.

How have the schedule and cost estimates changed?
The figures below come from different project stages and reports. They are not a like-for-like series of final costs: each is an estimate or business-case figure as reported by the named source.
| Source and stage | Reported cost | Schedule reported |
|---|---|---|
| Initial expectation, as reported by BBC News in June 2026 | Up to £134 million combined | Both facilities were originally expected to open in 2020. |
| Outline Business Case, listed in the Scottish Government’s August 2025 update | £163.7 million | ANCHOR projected operational in 2021; Baird projected for handover in 2021 and full operation in early 2022. |
| Full Business Case, listed in the Scottish Government’s August 2025 update | £233.2 million | ANCHOR estimated for May 2023; Baird for December 2023. |
| March 2023 update, as recorded in the Scottish Government’s August 2025 historical note | £261.1 million | ANCHOR estimated for October 2023; Baird for September 2024. |
| Later combined figure, reported by BBC News in June 2026 | £438.6 million | BBC reported the December 2026 ANCHOR and September 2027 Baird patient-receiving targets. |
The original expectation and later combined figure are both reported by the BBC. The intervening business-case and March 2023 values are recorded in the Scottish Government’s later progress update. Different project stages and price contexts mean the amounts should not be read as direct measures of cost growth without further accounting detail.

Is GRAHAM building the Aberdeen hospitals, and are its jobs delayed?
The available sources do not confirm GRAHAM’s contract role on Baird or ANCHOR, and they do not establish that a particular number of GRAHAM jobs is delayed. GRAHAM’s healthcare page describes its general sector experience, which is not evidence that it is responsible for this project. The June 2026 reports refer to a main contractor but do not identify that contractor as GRAHAM in the material available here. A link between the project’s schedule risk and GRAHAM employment therefore cannot be stated as fact.

The latest dated schedule information available here is the June 2026 reporting, while the Scottish Government’s progress update covers status at August 2025. Neither source confirms the October 2026 position. The reported targets are useful context, but a current NHS Grampian or Scottish Government statement is needed to establish whether they remain in force. Until then, the facilities’ present opening dates, final project cost and any contractor-specific employment impact remain unconfirmed.
