What the ABC report covers
Published by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Construction Technology and Innovation Committee, the sixth annual report focuses on technology related to construction health and safety. Contractor Magazine’s October 5, 2026 summary says the report was released during Careers in Construction Month. The summary describes a broad field of applications rather than a ranking of products.
Areas covered include wearable devices, AI-powered risk detection, environmental monitoring and connected jobsite solutions. The report also considers programs addressing mental health, fatigue and hydration—an indication that construction health and safety extends beyond immediate injury hazards.
How contractors are applying the technology
Case-study topics described in the summary show that “safety technology” can mean a device, a way of organizing information or a digital process. The examples include:

- Digital pre-task planning: Digitizing planning and hazard recognition before work begins.
These examples address different points in a safety process. Some can help teams notice conditions or patterns; others support planning, inspection, communication or worker resources. The summary does not establish that one category is more effective than another.
Technology supports a safety program; it does not replace one
ABC Construction Technology and Innovation Committee Chair Adam Latourelle, chief information officer at the BR Cos. in Glendora, California, said: “Technology alone does not create a safer workplace. Strong leadership, engaged employees and a culture that prioritizes health and safety remain the foundation of every successful organization.”

That distinction matters when evaluating a new tool. A wearable or monitoring system can provide information, but people still need a process for responding to it. Incident analysis is useful only if findings inform decisions and follow-up. Digital pre-task planning can help organize hazard recognition, but it does not make workers’ participation or supervisors’ attention optional.
ABC Vice President of Construction Technology and Innovation Matt Abeles described the report as looking beyond traditional jobsite safety to the physical, mental and emotional well-being of workers. The summary also quotes him saying, “The speed of health and safety innovation is redefining construction excellence.” Read alongside Latourelle’s comment, the message is not that adopting more technology guarantees better outcomes: innovation has to be integrated into a functioning safety culture.

It therefore does not support claims that a particular technology reduced injuries, lowered costs or outperformed another approach. Questions to ask before adopting a safety tool
The report’s examples suggest a practical way for contractors to assess a proposed technology without treating novelty as proof of value:
- Which hazard or health need does it address? Define the problem—such as heat exposure, planning gaps, security or inspection access—before selecting a tool.
- What part of the safety process does it support? Clarify whether it helps detect risk, document conditions, plan work, communicate or provide worker support.
- Who acts on the information? Establish how alerts, records or findings reach someone able to respond, and what follow-up is expected.
- Can workers use it and participate? Consider whether the process is understandable and practical for the people doing the work.
- How will the organization judge results? Set an appropriate way to review implementation and outcomes rather than assuming that deployment itself proves improved safety.
These are decision questions, not evaluation criteria attributed to ABC’s report. They reflect the report’s emphasis, as described by Contractor Magazine, on pairing technology with leadership, employee engagement and established safety practices.
