The headline most likely refers to A2US’s MEW Air Purifier, a compact Korean-developed device that uses electrically charged water microdroplets rather than a conventional disposable filter. It was named a CES 2025 Innovation Awards honoree, but that recognition is not a performance certification: public information does not establish a widely published CADR, verified room-size rating, or current U.S. retail price. The technology is worth watching, but it is not yet a proven substitute for a properly sized HEPA purifier when reliable room-wide particle removal matters.
What is the MEW water-droplet air purifier?
MEW is a product from South Korea’s A2US, also described as Water Micro Electrospray. The CES 2025 listing recognizes it in Sustainability & Energy Transition and describes an electrohydrodynamic water-purification concept. A2US presents it as a compact, filter-free device intended for personal spaces and vehicles; its stated dimensions are about 2.76 inches across and 3.15 inches high, designed to fit most vehicle cup holders. These are product claims, not evidence that the unit can clean an entire room at a useful rate.
The distinction matters because “water-based air purifier” describes several different technologies. A conventional air washer passes air through or over water. MEW’s distinctive claim is electrospray: electricity forms fine charged droplets, rather than simply using a basin of water as a dust trap. It is not the first water-based air cleaner.
How do electrosprayed water droplets clean air?
- Water feeds an electrospray emitter or nozzle.
- An electric field breaks the water into very small droplets and charges them.
- A2US says the process produces hydroxyl radicals, written ·OH, which can react with some odor-causing compounds and biological contaminants.
- The company says charged droplets interact with fine airborne particles and help collect them.
- For purification to matter in a room, pollutants must ultimately be captured or neutralized and clean air must be delivered at a sufficient rate. Droplet production alone does not establish either result.
On its MEW product page, A2US says its droplets are larger than 50 nanometers, that the device generates about 50 billion droplets per second, and that it uses less than 0.1 mL of water per hour. The company also says a refill can last more than a month under its stated conditions. Treat these as manufacturer-reported specifications; they do not measure room-cleaning speed or establish independent performance.

A2US’s technology and company history says development began in 2016 through a KAIST mechanical-engineering laboratory, followed by nozzle development, safety testing, prototypes, and commercialization work. A later KAIST-associated research release reported 99.9% ultrafine-dust removal under test conditions and said A2US planned a portable product launch in 2026. That is a reported research result, not proof that a retail MEW unit removes 99.9% of pollutants in an occupied home. The release does not make that figure a household guarantee.
What does the evidence say it can remove?
Particles, including dust and smoke
A2US says charged droplets collect fine dust. The KAIST-associated result is promising, but a percentage without its particle-size range, chamber volume, starting concentration, test duration, airflow, and product configuration cannot show how quickly a purifier will clean a real room. The public information cited here does not establish a broadly published, independently verified CADR for MEW.
That gap is especially important for wildfire or cigarette smoke. Small smoke particles require effective airflow as well as capture efficiency. Without a suitable smoke CADR and test protocol, MEW should not be relied on for smoke emergencies or as the primary purifier in a smoke-prone home.

Bacteria and viruses
A2US says hydroxyl radicals support antibacterial and antiviral effects and refers to bioaerosol testing by Korea Conformity Laboratories. A test showing that a microorganism was inactivated or reduced in a chamber is not the same as demonstrating that the device prevents infections in an occupied room. The public product material does not establish protection against respiratory disease.
Odors and gases
A2US says hydroxyl radicals break down odor-causing compounds. A general odor claim does not show removal of every volatile organic compound (VOC) or gas. Buyers concerned about formaldehyde, benzene, smoke gases, or a particular chemical should look for compound-specific test results.
Is it really filter-free—and maintenance-free?
A2US describes MEW as filter-free and says users refill a water tank instead of replacing a disposable filter. That may avoid recurring filter purchases, but it does not make the appliance maintenance-free. Water-contact parts can collect mineral deposits or residue, and a neglected reservoir can become a source of odor or microbial growth. Electricity, water, cleaning supplies, and eventual component replacement remain part of ownership costs.

“Filterless” also should not be taken to mean that a device has no screens, separators, washable parts, or other particle-handling components. Before buying, check the actual cleaning instructions, recommended water type, refill interval, and availability of replacement parts. A filter replacement is periodic and comparatively straightforward; cleaning a wet reservoir may take more frequent hands-on attention.
Can it replace a HEPA purifier?
Not on the public evidence available here. A HEPA purifier uses a mechanical filter; MEW claims a combination of charged droplets and reactive chemistry. The useful comparison is not novelty or a removal percentage alone, but how much cleaned air the device delivers for the pollutants and room in question.
CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, measures delivery of cleaned air and helps indicate whether a purifier can handle a given room. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Most Efficient criteria and Version 2.0 room-air-cleaner specification illustrate the emphasis on measured performance; the 2025 criteria exclude ozone generators and products combining air purification with humidification or dehumidification in the same housing for that recognition category.

A2US says MEW is ozone-free and that hydroxyl radicals convert back to water without harmful by-products. Those are relevant company claims, but the public materials cited here do not provide an accessible independent test report with methods, measured concentrations, and operating conditions. Electricity and reactive chemistry make by-product testing important: NIST has described potential emissions from some electronic and reactive air cleaners, including ozone, formaldehyde, and ultrafine particles, and published work on measuring by-product formation.
Before using a reactive or water-based unit around children, pets, or people with asthma or chemical sensitivities, seek documentation covering ozone and other emissions, water hygiene, and the conditions tested. Confirm whether the manufacturer specifies tap, distilled, or purified water, how often the reservoir must be emptied and cleaned, and whether water can enter the room air. Added moisture can be unwelcome in a humid or condensation-prone room; the word “water” alone does not tell you the humidity effect.

What should you check before buying a filterless purifier?
- CADR and room fit: Look for smoke, dust, and pollen CADR, not only a percentage removal claim. Do not assume a cup-holder-sized device can clean a bedroom or living room.
- Your pollutant: Particle capture, gas removal, and microbial inactivation require different evidence. Ask for compound-specific results for VOCs and gases.
- Emissions: Request ozone and by-product test methods, measured results, and operating conditions for any device using electrical charging or reactive chemistry.
- Water care: Confirm water type, reservoir-emptying and cleaning frequency, and whether deposits can affect the emitter.
- Humidity: Establish whether water stays inside the appliance or is released into the room, especially in damp spaces.
- Real ownership terms: Compare cleaning labor with filter costs; verify shipping status, warranty, return policy, replacement parts, and support in your country.
- Certification: Check the applicable local regulatory listings and electrical safety documentation. Do not treat an award or marketing claim as a certification.
