A Simple Tablesaw Jig for Cutting Segments for 12-Segment Turnings

A 30-60-90° triangle guides complementary cuts for a 12-segment turning ring, while a gauge block repeats segment length. Here’s what the method covers and what its accuracy claim means.

For accurate segments in a 12-piece turning ring, WOOD Magazine’s method uses a 30-60-90° woodworking triangle as a physical guide on a tablesaw sled. One edge guides the first cut; the other makes the complementary cut. A gauge block controls segment length. The method is specifically described for 12-segment rings, not every segmented-turning layout.

What the method is designed to cut

A 12-segment ring uses 12 equal pieces, with a 15° miter at each end of every segment. WOOD Magazine published Bill Wells’s method on August 26, 2020. It describes a way to guide the stock for complementary cuts and repeat segment length, rather than a universal jig for other ring sizes.

Set up the triangle and sled

  1. Attach a 30-60-90° woodworking triangle to a tablesaw sled with double-faced tape. Position the triangle at about 15°; Wells’s account says the angle need not be exact.
  2. Arrange a gauge block against the fence to establish the desired segment length.

The triangle’s far and near edges serve as the two guides. The stock must be held and guided safely by the sled and fence arrangement; the article does not give a detailed safety procedure or specify stock dimensions.

Cut the segments

  1. Place the blank against the triangle’s far edge and cut the first end.
  2. To cut a segment, place the board against the near edge and butt its cut end against the gauge block.
  3. Repeat the far-edge cut followed by the near-edge cut for the remaining segments, using the gauge block to repeat the length.

In the article’s method, the two triangle edges create complementary angles. Wells reports that the cuts fit the ring even when the angles do not match exactly. Treat that as his account of this setup, not a guarantee for every saw, material, or jig arrangement.

What the accuracy claim does—and does not—establish

Wells wrote that “An error as little as 1/10° in the angle of segment ends proved too much.” He then described the triangle-based method as making the problem disappear. This is an attributed first-person woodworking account in WOOD Magazine, not a controlled accuracy study or a measured tolerance that can be assumed for other setups.

The article names a thick plastic woodworking triangle, double-faced tape, a sled, and a gauge block. It gives Rockler item no. 31545 for the triangle; current stock and product equivalence are not established here. The article does not compare the method with commercial segment-cutting sleds, digital angle gauges, or other ring geometries.

Before adapting the setup

  • Confirm that the triangle has straight, usable edges for guiding the blank.
  • Check that the sled and fence arrangement can hold and guide the stock safely.
  • Make sure the gauge block can repeat the segment length you need.
  • Do not assume the described geometry transfers unchanged to a ring with a different segment count; the article supplies no adaptation instructions.
