John Travolta’s airport mansion was designed to make flying part of everyday home life: the house looked out onto aircraft parked nearby, and a taxiway connected it to Jumbolair’s community runway in Ocala, Florida. Architectural Digest’s profile describes a midcentury-style concrete-and-glass home shaped around that aviation idea. Its figures are historical, and published accounts give different home sizes.

What does John Travolta’s airport mansion look like inside?

Architectural Digest’s profile, published online in 2007 from its April 2004 issue, describes a concrete-and-glass home of 8,900 square feet, with aircraft visible through large windows. The account says a Boeing 707 and a Gulfstream II were parked about 100 feet from the house beneath individual plane ports, with outdoor walkways leading inside after disembarking. Those measurements and aircraft details describe the home at the time of the profile, not a current inventory or inspection. Architectural Digest

Travolta called its style “midcentury-style,” rather than modern. The profile says the design aimed for modern elegance inspired by major hotels and airport terminals from 1952 to 1962. It names architect Dana Smith and describes influences including Frank Lloyd Wright’s clean lines and dark woods, Eero Saarinen’s aviation architecture, and Morris Lapidus’s curved lobby windows.

Windows, rooms and details in the profile

The reported plan included six bedrooms, two kitchens and three separate dining areas. Blue-tinted windows were described as 18 feet high in a bedroom and 15 feet in the dining room, framing views of aircraft. An Art Deco dining room featured a 15-by-17-foot mural based on a 1937 Fortune advertisement showing a family waiting for a flight. The profile also mentions a pool, a slide and a golf course.

How did the house connect to the runway?

The central design decision was to bring aircraft close to the house without making the residence itself the airport. Travolta told Architectural Digest that he chose the area for a “bigger, stronger runway,” then built a taxiway to the home capable of bearing the 707’s weight. The profile also describes an eight-year process to get the project underway. AOPA had reported in 2002 that Travolta was building in Jumbolair’s first phase. AOPA

Kelly Preston described the idea as having planes “in his front yard” so the family could step out and leave for dinner by aircraft. That vision explains the home’s distinctive arrangement: aircraft close enough to be seen and reached on foot, with a taxiway linking the property to a runway.

Does John Travolta’s house have a runway?

Not an exclusive runway belonging only to the residence. The home is within Jumbolair, a fly-in community in Ocala/Marion County, Florida. Jumbolair’s current official site lists Airport 17FL and a 7,550-by-200-foot asphalt runway designated 18/36, at approximately 100 feet MSL, with GPS approach and PAPI lighting. It says estates have runway access via taxiway. Jumbolair describes the runway as the largest licensed private runway in North America; that superlative is the community’s own claim. Jumbolair

The distinction matters: Travolta’s home was built around access to a shared community aviation facility, rather than a private runway serving one house. AOPA’s 2002 description likewise characterized Jumbolair as a fly-in development with two-to-four-acre lots and a 7,550-foot paved, lighted runway.

How large is the home, and why do published figures differ?

Accounts report different sizes, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive current measurement. Architectural Digest gave 8,900 square feet in its profile, published online in 2007 from the April 2004 issue. The Ocala Gazette reported in 2021 that Travolta owned an almost 20-acre property in the development with a 6,600-square-foot home. The reports may use different measurement bases or refer to the property at different times; the available accounts do not reconcile the figures. Ocala Gazette

The Gazette’s reported $9.5 million sale price was for Jumbolair as a whole, not Travolta’s residence. It should not be mistaken for a price paid for his home.

What is known about ownership today?

The latest source in these accounts confirming Travolta’s ownership is the Ocala Gazette’s report from February 26, 2021. Jumbolair’s current community information describes the runway and estate access, but does not establish whether Travolta still owns or lives at the property in 2026. The 2004/2007 Architectural Digest profile and the 2021 report are useful for understanding the home’s design and history, not for asserting present-day occupancy.

Why the house stands out as a piece of residential design

For a construction-minded reader, the interesting feature is how the home, aircraft parking and taxiway were conceived as a connected experience. The house’s large windows made the aircraft part of the view; walkways and nearby plane ports brought them into the household’s daily circulation; and the taxiway addressed the practical demand of moving a heavy aircraft between home and runway. The result, as described in the profile, was not simply a large house near an airport but a residence planned around aviation access.

That approach also makes the project unusually dependent on its setting: it relies on a fly-in community’s runway, taxiway access and operating environment. The property’s appeal cannot be separated from Jumbolair’s shared infrastructure.
