A Guide to Compostable Plates: Materials and How to Dispose of Them

A plate’s material label does not determine its disposal route. Check its certification, intended composting system and local facility acceptance before putting it in an organics bin.

Compostable plates belong in a compost collection only when the exact product is suitable for that system and the local operator accepts it. A label such as “plant-based” or “biodegradable” is not enough. Check the finished plate’s certification and package directions, then confirm local acceptance. Commercial compostability does not mean a plate is suitable for a backyard pile.

What are compostable plates made of?

Compostable foodware may be made from paper or plant fibers such as bamboo and sugarcane, or from compostable polymers. These are material categories, not guarantees about disposal. A finished plate may include coatings or additives, and its construction matters as much as the material named on the package. For example, the City of El Cerrito’s foodware guidance names paper, bamboo, sugar cane and other natural materials in its local ordinance context; that is not a blanket rule for other jurisdictions. See the City of El Cerrito foodware ordinance summary.

For commercial certification, the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) uses ASTM D6400 as its base assessment standard and offers optional D6868 and/or D8410 assessment for eligible items. BPI describes D8410 as limited to cellulosic-fiber-based substrates and excludes items where thermoplastic polymer is laminated to those substrates. These standards are not interchangeable claims for every fiber or polymer product. See BPI’s commercial compostability certification information.

Are compostable plates really compostable?

They may be, but the claim needs to apply to the finished product and the intended composting environment. “Natural,” “plant-based” and “biodegradable” do not, by themselves, establish that a plate is certified compostable or accepted by a particular facility.

BPI says its certification checks include biodegradation testing, disintegration testing of the finished item, and compost-quality tests. Its FAQ describes ASTM D6400 and D6868 as standards for commercial composting environments that address biodegradation, disintegration, heavy metals and ecotoxicity. A fiber-based appearance or material description is no substitute for verifying the product’s certification. See BPI’s frequently asked questions.

How to verify a plate’s claim

  1. Identify the exact item. Use the brand, product name and item or SKU number; a supplier’s general statement about a raw material may not cover the finished plate.
  2. Check the certification and intended environment. Look for an established certification mark and whether it identifies commercial or home composting. BPI’s commercial program uses ASTM D6400 as its base, with optional standards for eligible products.
  3. Search the product listing. Use the BPI certified-product catalog, which can be searched by product, company, SKU or keyword. Catalog entries are certified for commercial compostability; only entries with BPI’s home-compost indicator are also certified for home compostability.
  4. Read the package directions. The label should make the intended disposal environment clear. Applicable rules vary by location.
  5. Ask the local collector or facility. Certification does not require a compost operator to accept the product.

Can compostable plates go in my compost bin?

Only if the bin’s collection program or processing facility accepts that type of plate. Check the operator’s accepted-items list or ask directly; a certification mark alone does not settle the bin decision.

  • The local program explicitly accepts the plate type: Follow its instructions for food residue and collection, and use the organics stream it specifies.
  • The plate is commercially certified, but the facility rejects foodservice ware or does not list the item: Keep it out of the compost bin and follow local residual-waste directions.
  • The plate is only described as compostable, biodegradable or plant-based: Do not assume it belongs in organics collection. Ask the program; if it cannot verify acceptance, follow local trash guidance.

Are compostable plates home compostable?

Not necessarily. Commercial certification is for conditions in a commercial composting environment; it does not establish that a plate will compost appropriately in a backyard pile. Use a home compost system only for a plate explicitly certified for home compostability, and follow the certifier’s and local guidance. In BPI’s catalog, the home-compost indicator distinguishes products with that additional certification from products certified only for commercial composting.

Which plate option fits the available waste system?

Choice Intended system What to verify Practical decision
Reusable plate Repeated use with collection, washing and return Whether an effective reuse system is available and can be operated EPA’s preferred choice where that system works.
Commercially compostable disposable plate Commercial or industrial composting Exact product certification and acceptance by the local facility Use only when an accepting program and collection are available.
Home-compost-certified plate Home composting conditions covered by the certification Exact home-compost certification, not just commercial certification Use only as the certification and home system direct.
Recyclable single-use ware Local recycling stream Whether the local program accepts the material or product and whether it meets its cleanliness rules Consider when reusables are unavailable, composting ware is rejected, and local recycling accepts it.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “Reusable food service ware is the preferred choice because it will use less energy and fewer resources over its lifespan if an effective reuse system is developed and operated.” EPA treats commercially compostable ware as conditional on an accepting program and procured collection or hauling, and points to recyclable ware where composting is unavailable or rejects those items and local recycling accepts them. Its comparison is about workable waste systems, not a universal lifecycle ranking of every plate material. See EPA’s guidance on identifying sustainable food service and food service ware.

What rules apply to compostable-plate labels?

Rules depend on where the product is sold. Minnesota is one state-specific example, not a national standard: effective January 1, 2026, covered bags, packaging, and food and beverage products labeled “compostable” must be certified to ASTM D6400 or D6868, except products made of wood or paper with no additives or coatings. A mark from an approved certifier can meet the standard-identification labeling requirement, and products must be clearly labeled for industrial or commercial composting. The law governs covered sales in Minnesota; it does not make a facility accept a product.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) states, “Compost sites can determine what, if any, compostable products they will accept at their facility, in accordance with their permit or other requirements.” Check current state and local rules where you live, as well as the facility’s accepted-items list. See the MPCA’s compostable product labeling guidance.

MPCA also says food scraps and compostable materials make up approximately one-third of residential waste in Minnesota; the agency page does not state a publication year for that figure. It is state-specific context, not a national estimate. See MPCA’s composting information.
