A 3,775-Year-Old Log Offers Evidence for Carbon-Locking Wood Vaults

A cedar preserved beneath compact clay for 3,775 years offers a striking natural example of carbon storage, but engineered wood vaults still face questions about site conditions, emissions, and verification.

A cedar log found beneath compact clay in Quebec retained nearly all its carbon for 3,775 years, giving researchers evidence that carefully chosen burial conditions can preserve wood for millennia. The finding supports further study of engineered “wood vaults” as a possible carbon-removal method—but it does not show that burial will work reliably in every soil or at large scale.

What researchers found in Quebec

In 2013, researchers excavating a trench for a wood-vault pilot project in Quebec uncovered an eastern red cedar log about 2 meters belowground. The team led by University of Maryland atmospheric and oceanic science professor Ning Zeng dated it to 3,775 years old. In a comparison with modern wood, the ancient sample showed less than 5% carbon loss, according to the 2024 study in Science (study record and abstract; University of Maryland account, September 26, 2024).

The likely explanation is the site’s compact, low-permeability clay. By restricting oxygen and limiting access by fungi and insects, the soil may have slowed decomposition enough to preserve the log. This is evidence about one unusually preserved specimen and its setting, not a guarantee for other wood, soils, climates, or engineered sites.

How a wood vault is intended to store carbon

Wood vaulting is a proposed hybrid nature-and-engineering approach: bury woody biomass in conditions that inhibit decay, keeping its carbon out of the atmosphere for longer than it would remain stored in exposed or decomposing material. The Quebec discovery acts as a natural example of long-term preservation that researchers can investigate without waiting centuries for a new burial experiment.

Novabright 8 Pcs Exotic Hardwood Lumber 3/4" x 2" x 12"
  • A Variety of Rare Wood Species: this set of wood boards contains four rare woods - padauk, zebrawood, purpleheart, merbau, 2 of each of the 4 types of wood, a total of 8, enough to meet the needs of artistic creation
  • Optimal Size: the single strip measures about 12 x 2 x 0.75 inches/ 30.48 x 5.08 x 1.91 cm; The uniform size is convenient for layout and splicing; This size is the good size for making small cutting boards
  • Natural Textures: padauk, zebrawood, purpleheart and merbau each have natural grain and color, making them suitable for making small cutting boards, decorative panels, or handicrafts; The wood itself is easy to oil and polish, and the finished product has a superior texture
  • Materials: the wood panel is made of solid wood with a unique and layered surface texture; After preliminary drying, it is suitable for turning, planing, cutting and gluing
  • Wide Range of Applications: can be applied in woodworking, handicraft production, cutting board processing or as a carving and inlay material

The study’s abstract estimates that, after optimization, the method could have a global sequestration potential of up to 10 gigatonnes of CO2 per year, at an estimated cost of $30–$100 per tonne. These are author estimates, not observed removal capacity, current market costs, or a forecast of deployment. The same abstract notes that terrestrial photosynthesis removes six times more CO2 annually than fossil-fuel emissions, while most of that captured carbon is later returned through decomposition.

What the ancient log does—and does not—establish

A naturally preserved log demonstrates that some underground conditions can keep wood intact for thousands of years. It does not establish how consistently an engineered vault can reproduce those conditions, how much greenhouse gas a project emits across its full lifecycle, or what monitoring is needed to verify storage over time.

A 2025 report in Yale Alumni Magazine described experiments at seven U.S. sites examining how soil, climate, and hydrology affect decomposition and related emissions. The report characterized best practices as poorly understood at that time. That makes the site conditions and performance of each project central questions, rather than details that can be assumed from the Quebec find.

What a wood-vault project would need to evaluate

  • Soil permeability: Whether the ground can limit oxygen movement to buried wood.
  • Hydrology and climate: How water movement and local conditions affect decay and emissions.
  • Wood decomposition: How quickly stored material breaks down and what greenhouse gases are released.
  • Monitoring and verification: How storage can be checked over the intended period.
  • Lifecycle costs: Whether cost figures describe an actual project or a modeled, optimized scenario.

The discovery depth of about 2 meters describes where this log was found; it is not a universal engineering specification. Available evidence does not establish one recommended burial depth or a single site design.

How wood vaulting fits into climate action

The University of Maryland presents wood vaulting as a potential complement to other climate strategies, including reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. The ancient log supports continued investigation of durable carbon storage; it does not show that storage can replace emissions cuts or that the method is ready to deliver the study’s estimated global potential.
