Best Weed Killer for Zoysia Grass: What Actually Works Without Wrecking the Lawn

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best weed killer for zoysia grass is not one bottle with a flashy label. It is the right active ingredient applied at the right time, to the right weed, while the zoysia is healthy enough to tolerate it. For most homeowners, that means a spring pre-emergent for crabgrass and goosegrass, a fall pre-emergent for annual bluegrass and winter weeds, and spot treatments for broadleaf weeds or sedges as they appear.

If you want the short answer: use prodiamine, dithiopyr, or pendimethalin before annual grassy weeds germinate; use a zoysia-labeled broadleaf herbicide for clover, dandelion, chickweed, and similar weeds; use sedge-specific products such as halosulfuron, sulfentrazone, bentazon, or imazaquin for nutsedge and kyllinga; and be extremely cautious with glyphosate because it can kill actively growing zoysia.

On our construction and landscape-adjacent job sites, the worst lawns usually have the same pattern: bare soil, compaction, poor drainage, thin turf, and then a late attempt to fix everything with one strong spray. Herbicide can be part of the repair, but it cannot substitute for a thick, well-managed zoysia stand.

Start With the Weed, Not the Brand

Zoysia is a warm-season turfgrass. It spreads by stolons and rhizomes, handles heat well, and can make a dense lawn when it is maintained correctly. That dense canopy is one reason people like it. It also means herbicide mistakes can be expensive because injured zoysia may take weeks or months to fill back in.

Before buying anything, identify the weed category. A product that works on dandelion may do very little to crabgrass. A crabgrass product may not touch nutsedge. A non-selective herbicide may kill the weed and the zoysia together.

Weed problem Common examples Best control approach Typical timing
Summer annual grassy weeds Crabgrass, goosegrass, sandbur Pre-emergent such as prodiamine, dithiopyr, or pendimethalin; labeled post-emergent where needed Spring before germination
Winter annual weeds Annual bluegrass, chickweed, henbit Fall pre-emergent plus labeled winter post-emergent if needed Late summer to fall
Broadleaf weeds Dandelion, clover, plantain, dollarweed Zoysia-labeled broadleaf mix, often 2,4-D with dicamba and MCPP or MCPA When weeds are young and turf is not stressed
Sedges Yellow nutsedge, purple nutsedge, kyllinga Sedge-specific herbicide such as halosulfuron, sulfentrazone, bentazon, or imazaquin Active growth, often with repeat applications
Perennial grassy weeds Dallisgrass, bermudagrass contamination, mature grassy clumps Professional diagnosis; selective options are limited and label-dependent Varies by weed and turf condition
Total vegetation kill Renovation areas, driveway cracks, bed edges Glyphosate or other non-selective herbicide away from desirable turf Only where zoysia injury is acceptable

The active ingredient matters more than the brand name. Two products with different front labels may contain the same chemistry. Two products with similar marketing may have different turf restrictions. Always confirm that the label lists zoysia and the target weed.

Best Pre-Emergent Weed Killers for Zoysia

Pre-emergents are the foundation of weed control in zoysia. They form a chemical barrier near the soil surface that stops many annual weed seedlings before they establish. They are most useful for weeds that come from seed every year, especially crabgrass, goosegrass, sandbur, and annual bluegrass.

For zoysia lawns, the common pre-emergent active ingredients are prodiamine, dithiopyr, and pendimethalin. These are normally applied as granular products with a broadcast spreader or as liquid concentrates with a calibrated sprayer. Granules are easier for many homeowners. Liquids can be efficient, but only if you measure the lawn and mix accurately.

Spring Pre-Emergent for Crabgrass and Goosegrass

For summer annual weeds, apply the spring pre-emergent before crabgrass germinates. In many U.S. regions, that is when soil temperatures are approaching about 55 degrees Fahrenheit for several days, often from late February through April depending on location. Southern lawns may need treatment much earlier than northern transition-zone lawns.

Dithiopyr has one advantage: some products provide early post-emergent activity on very young crabgrass. That does not mean it will rescue a lawn full of mature crabgrass in July. Once crabgrass has several tillers and a tough root system, control becomes harder and more expensive.

After application, many pre-emergents need to be watered in with roughly 0.25 to 0.5 inch of irrigation or rainfall, depending on the label. Do not apply before a heavy storm that could wash product into drains, ditches, or waterways.

Fall Pre-Emergent for Annual Bluegrass and Winter Weeds

Fall pre-emergent is often the missing step in zoysia lawns. Homeowners focus on crabgrass in spring, then annual bluegrass and chickweed show up during cool weather. A fall application targets annual bluegrass and winter annual broadleaf weeds before they germinate.

In many areas, the fall window lands from late August through October. The exact timing depends on local weather, elevation, and soil temperature. If your zoysia goes tan and dormant in winter, winter weeds can stand out sharply against the dormant turf. Prevention looks much cleaner than chasing weeds after they are established.

Best Post-Emergent Weed Killers for Zoysia

Post-emergent herbicides treat weeds you can already see. This is where label reading becomes more important because zoysia tolerance varies by active ingredient, application rate, temperature, and growth stage.

Celsius WG Herbicide 2-Pack with Bug And Blade Weed ID Card
  • TWO TREATMENTS, ONE SEASON — COMPLETE WEED CONTROL UP TO 4,000 SQ FT — The two-pack delivers a full spring + fall treatment cycle in one order. Use packet one in early spring as weeds emerge, and packet two in late summer or fall for a season-ending cleanup. Two gallons per packet, two applications per season — one purchase covers your entire warm-season weed program from first green-up through dormancy.
  • KILLS 120+ WEEDS INCLUDING CRABGRASS, DOLLARWEED, CLOVER, AND DANDELION — Triple-mode-of-action formula (Dicamba + Thiencarbazone-methyl + Iodosulfuron) works through three independent killing mechanisms simultaneously, so weeds that have built resistance to standard herbicides still can't escape all three. Each packet includes a Bug and Blade Weed ID Card showing the 6 most treated warm-season lawn weeds by photo and name.
  • SAFE ON ST. AUGUSTINE, BERMUDA, CENTIPEDE, AND ZOYSIA — NOT FOR COOL-SEASON GRASSES — Celsius WG is engineered specifically for warm-season turf and will not harm St. Augustinegrass, Bermudagrass, Centipedegrass, Zoysiagrass, or Buffalograss when used as directed. Do not apply to tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, or creeping bentgrass.
  • RESULTS IN 1–4 WEEKS — APPLY CORRECTLY AND THE MATH WORKS — Weed growth ceases within hours of application; visible yellowing begins within 1–2 weeks; full kill occurs in 1–4 weeks depending on temperature. Apply to actively growing weeds when daily average temperature exceeds 60°F. A second application 2–4 weeks later is recommended for stubborn perennials like Virginia buttonweed or dallisgrass.
  • TWO WEED ID CARDS INCLUDED — ONE PER APPLICATION — PLUS SAFE FOR PETS AND FAMILY AFTER DRY — Both packets include our laminated Bug and Blade Weed ID Card with photos and names of the 6 most commonly treated warm-season lawn weeds. No more guessing what's growing in your lawn. Treated areas are safe for pets and family once the application has fully dried. Follow the current product label for complete guidance.

For scattered weeds, spot-spraying is usually better than blanket-spraying. A one-gallon pump sprayer can treat small patches with less chemical load on the lawn. Mark treated areas with flags or a simple sketch so you do not overlap the same spot three times.

Broadleaf Weeds: Clover, Dandelion, Chickweed, Plantain

Many broadleaf weeds in zoysia can be controlled with products containing 2,4-D, dicamba, and MCPP or MCPA, as long as the label allows use on zoysia. These mixes are common in homeowner weed killers and professional turf products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use them when weeds are actively growing and temperatures are within the label range. Avoid spraying during heat stress, drought stress, or windy conditions. Dicamba and similar ingredients can move into planting beds or injure sensitive ornamentals, especially when applied carelessly near shrubs, trees, vegetables, or flower beds.

For best results, mow two or three days before treatment, then wait a couple of days after spraying before mowing again. That gives the herbicide enough leaf surface and time to move through the weed.

Crabgrass: Prevention First, Rescue Second

Crabgrass is best controlled before it appears. If it is already up, check labels carefully. Quinclorac is commonly used for crabgrass in turf, but not every quinclorac product is labeled for zoysia, and use restrictions vary. Do not assume a crabgrass killer is safe just because it says it is for lawns.

If crabgrass is mature, the better plan may be to reduce seed production, apply fall and spring pre-emergent, and thicken the zoysia. One season of poor timing can create two seasons of cleanup.

Nutsedge and Kyllinga: Use Sedge Chemistry

Nutsedge is not a grassy weed, even though many homeowners describe it that way. It has a triangular stem, grows faster than the surrounding turf, and often appears in wet or compacted areas. Pulling it by hand can leave underground tubers behind, and the patch often returns.

Use a sedge-labeled herbicide such as halosulfuron, sulfentrazone, bentazon, or imazaquin where the product label allows use on zoysia. Expect follow-up treatments. The first application may yellow or burn down the visible sedge, but underground tubers and rhizomes can survive. Many sedge labels call for a second application after a set interval.

If sedge keeps coming back in the same low spot, fix the water problem. Check downspout discharge, irrigation overspray, compacted subsoil, and grade. On construction sites, we often see sedge explode where equipment compacted the soil or where final grading left a shallow bowl that holds water.

When Zoysia Is Most Vulnerable

Zoysia can tolerate many labeled herbicides, but timing still matters. The same product that performs well on healthy summer turf can cause discoloration or thinning if applied during green-up, drought, high heat, or winter transition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be conservative when zoysia is coming out of dormancy. Green-up is not just a color change; the plant is restarting active growth. Late-winter and early-spring herbicide decisions should account for air temperature, turf condition, and how close the lawn is to active growth. If the lawn is half green and half dormant, wait unless the label specifically supports that use and the weed problem justifies treatment.

Heat matters too. Atrazine may be labeled for some zoysia uses, but temperature restrictions are serious. Some extension guidance warns about turf injury when atrazine is applied above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Broadleaf herbicides can also injure turf or nearby plants when applied during hot, windy weather.

Do not spray stressed zoysia. If the lawn is drought-stressed, scalped, diseased, newly sodded, or recovering from construction traffic, solve the stress first where practical. Herbicide on weak turf often turns a weed problem into a bare-ground problem.

DIY Cost vs Professional Weed Control in 2026

DIY weed control can be cost-effective if the lawn is straightforward and you are willing to measure carefully. Professional service makes sense when the weed mix is complicated, the lawn is large, or the risk of turf damage is high.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Typical 2026 cost Best fit Main risk
DIY granular pre-emergent About $25-$50 per bag for an average lawn Routine spring or fall prevention Wrong spreader setting, skipped overlap, no water-in
DIY spot-spray post-emergent About $15-$45 for many homeowner products Small broadleaf or sedge patches Wrong active ingredient or spraying during heat stress
Professional weed control visit About $49-$210 per treatment in common national ranges Recurring prevention and monitored applications Paying for generic service without proper weed ID
Manual weed removal About $50-$100 per hour Small beds, sensitive areas, chemical avoidance Incomplete root or tuber removal
Heavy infestation or difficult site Can reach $150-$400 per acre or more Large properties, severe weeds, access issues Underlying drainage or soil problems left unfixed

For a typical quarter-acre property, a single professional weed control treatment often lands around $50-$150, with many estimates centering near $95. Prices rise when the lawn needs specialty sedge chemistry, crabgrass rescue treatments, multiple visits, steep slopes, difficult access, or combined fertilization.

Full lawn maintenance is a broader budget item. National 2026 estimates for lawn maintenance can start around $0.15-$0.56 per square foot, while fertilizing can start around $0.12-$0.32 per square foot. Weed control is only one line item in a healthy zoysia program.

How to Apply Weed Killer Without Damaging Zoysia

Measure the lawn before you treat it. Do not guess. A 5,000-square-foot lawn needs a different amount of product than a 9,000-square-foot lawn, and overapplication is one of the fastest ways to discolor zoysia.

For rectangular areas, multiply length by width. Break irregular lawns into smaller rectangles or triangles, add them together, and subtract driveways, patios, beds, and building footprints. A 50-foot by 80-foot front lawn is 4,000 square feet before deductions.

Granular Products

Use a broadcast spreader for most full-lawn granular applications. Check the product label for the spreader setting, then make a test pass if you are unsure. Apply in a consistent pattern, keep the spreader moving before opening the gate, and shut the gate before stopping or turning on pavement.

Sweep granules off sidewalks, curbs, driveways, and patios back into the lawn. Do not wash them into the street. Many pre-emergents must be watered in, but that water should move the product into the turf zone, not into the storm system.

Rank #4

Liquid Products

For liquid concentrates, use a dedicated lawn sprayer with visible measurement marks. Calibrate it. One practical method is to fill the sprayer with water, spray a measured 1,000-square-foot area at your normal walking pace, then see how much water you used. That tells you how much finished spray volume you apply per 1,000 square feet.

Wear chemical-resistant gloves, long sleeves, long pants, socks, shoes, and eye protection as directed by the label. Keep children and pets off treated areas until the label says reentry is allowed. Store products in their original containers, away from heat, drains, food, seed, and animal feed.

Weed-and-Feed on Zoysia: Useful or Risky?

Weed-and-feed can be convenient, but it is often the wrong tool at the wrong time. Fertilizer timing and herbicide timing do not always match. Zoysia should be fertilized based on active growth and soil-test guidance, while herbicides are timed around weed germination or weed growth stage.

A large weed-and-feed bag may cost around $65-$70 at retail, while smaller preventer products may be closer to $18 depending on size and inventory. The price is not the deciding factor. The deciding factors are whether the active ingredient is right for the weed, whether zoysia is listed on the label, and whether the timing fits both the turf and the weed.

Avoid weed-and-feed on stressed, dormant, newly installed, or partially green zoysia unless the label clearly allows it. Also avoid spreading it into planting beds or over exposed tree roots. If you only have scattered weeds, spot-spray instead of treating the whole lawn with herbicide and fertilizer.

Construction-Site Lessons for Better Zoysia Weed Control

Weeds love disturbed ground. After grading, trenching, driveway replacement, patio work, drainage repair, or utility work, bare soil can turn green with weeds before zoysia has a chance to knit together. The best weed control after construction is fast stabilization.

On our job sites, we try to avoid leaving loose soil exposed longer than necessary. Depending on the project, that may mean sod, mulch, erosion-control blanket, temporary cover, or properly timed seeding outside the zoysia area. Around hardscape edges, we also look closely at grade. Water that runs off a patio and sits along the turf edge will invite sedge and thin the zoysia.

Compaction is another common issue. A skid steer, dumpster, material staging area, or repeated foot traffic can compact the upper soil layer. Zoysia may survive, but thin turf leaves openings for weeds. Core aeration during the appropriate growing season, topdressing where needed, drainage corrections, and correct mowing height can do more long-term good than another herbicide application.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when you have a mostly healthy zoysia lawn, a known weed problem, and a manageable lawn size. A homeowner can handle a spring pre-emergent, a fall pre-emergent, and small spot treatments with careful label reading and basic equipment.

Hire a licensed lawn applicator when the lawn has mixed turf species, recent sod, severe sedge pressure, perennial grassy weeds, drainage failures, pesticide-sensitive landscaping, or proximity to ponds, streams, wells, or storm drains. Also hire help if you cannot identify the weed. Guessing with herbicide is not a plan.

Professional help is also worth considering when the lawn is part of a larger property improvement. If you are installing hardscape, correcting drainage, replacing a driveway, or repairing grade, coordinate weed control with the construction schedule. Spraying before heavy soil disturbance is usually wasted money. Treating after stabilization and turf recovery is often more effective.

Safety, Label, and Local Rule Notes

The pesticide label is the law for use directions. It controls where the product can be applied, how much can be used, what turf species are allowed, what protective gear is required, and how soon people or pets can reenter the area. State and local rules may add restrictions, especially near water or for certain active ingredients.

Do not apply herbicide to pavement, open drains, saturated soil, or windy conditions. Do not mix products unless the labels allow it. Do not exceed the rate because the weeds look bad. More product can injure zoysia, contaminate runoff, and still fail to solve the underlying problem.

If you hire a company, ask whether the applicator is licensed and insured, what active ingredients they plan to use, what weeds they are targeting, how many treatments are expected, and what you need to do before and after application. A good answer should include timing, watering instructions, mowing guidance, and realistic expectations.

The Bottom Line

For zoysia grass, the best weed killer is a program, not a single product. Use pre-emergent herbicide in spring for crabgrass, goosegrass, sandbur, and other summer annuals. Use fall pre-emergent for annual bluegrass and winter annual weeds. Use zoysia-labeled broadleaf herbicides for clover, dandelion, chickweed, and plantain. Use sedge-specific products for nutsedge and kyllinga. Save glyphosate for renovation, dormant-use situations where the label allows it, or areas where you are willing to kill vegetation.

Then fix the conditions that invited weeds in the first place: mowing height, irrigation, drainage, compaction, fertility, shade, and bare soil. A thick zoysia lawn is still the most reliable weed control you can build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weed killer for zoysia grass in 2026?

For most zoysia lawns, the best plan is prodiamine, dithiopyr, or pendimethalin as a pre-emergent, plus spot treatments matched to the weed. Use labeled broadleaf herbicides for clover and dandelion, and sedge-specific herbicides for nutsedge or kyllinga.

What weed killer is safe for zoysia but kills crabgrass?

Pre-emergents such as prodiamine, dithiopyr, and pendimethalin are commonly used to prevent crabgrass in zoysia. For existing crabgrass, quinclorac may be an option only if the specific product label allows use on zoysia.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use atrazine on zoysia grass?

Some atrazine products may be labeled for zoysia, but label limits matter. Avoid applying atrazine above label temperature limits; turf injury risk can rise above about 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

When should I apply pre-emergent to a zoysia lawn?

Apply spring pre-emergent before summer annual weeds germinate, often when soil temperatures approach about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Apply fall pre-emergent in late summer or fall before annual bluegrass and winter weeds germinate.

How do I kill nutsedge in zoysia without damaging the grass?

Use a zoysia-labeled sedge herbicide such as halosulfuron, sulfentrazone, bentazon, or imazaquin. Nutsedge often needs follow-up treatment because underground tubers can survive the first application.

How much does professional weed control for zoysia cost?

In 2026, professional weed control commonly runs about $49-$210 per treatment, with many quarter-acre lawn treatments around $50-$150. Severe infestations, sedge control, steep sites, and large lawns cost more.
