If you want the short answer: tip 10% to 20% for a one-time standard house cleaning, 15% to 20% for deep cleaning or move-out cleaning, and $10 to $20 per cleaner for strong recurring service. For a difficult post-remodel or post-construction clean, a 20% tip or $30 to $50 per cleaner is reasonable when the crew handled heavy dust, tight timing, appliance interiors, cabinets, adhesive residue, or extra detail work.
For a regular cleaner who comes weekly, biweekly, or monthly, you do not always need to tip every visit. Many homeowners give a larger year-end or holiday bonus instead, often equal to the cost of one cleaning visit. That is especially appropriate when the same person has taken care of the home all year.
The right number depends on the job type, the bill, the number of cleaners, and whether the cleaner is an employee, agency crew member, or owner-operator. On our job sites, we think about tipping the same way we think about allowances, change orders, and punch-list work: define the scope first, then pay fairly when someone goes beyond it.
Quick Tipping Rules for 2026
Most standard house cleanings in the U.S. land around $100 to $300 per visit in 2026. Common pricing ranges include about $118 to $238 for a standard visit, $100 to $300 for many routine cleans, and hourly rates around $25 to $90 per cleaner depending on location, company structure, and scope. Many independent cleaners and small crews are closer to $40 to $55 per hour, while professional cleaning companies may price by the visit, by the hour, or by room count.

- Size is 3 11/16" by 6 1/2" White Envelope Printed in Black Ink w/ Standard Gum Seal

Use this as a practical baseline:
- Routine recurring cleaning: $10 to $20 per cleaner when the service is strong, or save it for a holiday bonus.
- One-time standard cleaning: 10% to 20% of the bill.
- Deep cleaning: 15% to 20% of the bill.
- Move-in or move-out cleaning: 15% to 20%, more if the home is heavily soiled.
- Post-renovation or post-construction cleaning: 20%, or $30 to $50 per cleaner for difficult dust and detail work.
- Owner-operator: optional, but appreciated for exceptional work, short-notice scheduling, difficult conditions, or added tasks.
If the bill already includes a service charge, platform fee, or gratuity line, ask whether that money goes directly to the cleaners. Do not assume it does. Cash is still the cleanest method when a crew arrives because you can hand each person their share directly.
House Cleaner Tip Calculator
Percentages are useful, but homeowners usually need the actual dollar amount. The table below converts common cleaning bills into 10%, 15%, and 20% tips.
| Cleaning bill | 10% tip | 15% tip | 20% tip | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $120 | $12 | $18 | $24 | Small standard clean |
| $180 | $18 | $27 | $36 | Typical standard clean |
| $240 | $24 | $36 | $48 | Larger standard clean or two-person crew |
| $300 | $30 | $45 | $60 | Deep clean starting point |
| $500 | $50 | $75 | $100 | Move-out or heavy post-remodel clean |
| $700 | $70 | $105 | $140 | Large deep clean or dust-heavy project |
For example, if you pay $180 for a standard cleaning, a normal tip is $18 to $36. If you pay $300 for a deep clean, a fair tip is $45 to $60. If you pay $500 for a move-out or post-construction clean and the crew handled heavy dust, cabinets, appliances, baseboards, and tight scheduling, $75 to $100 or more is appropriate.
How to Tip a Multi-Person Cleaning Crew
When two or three cleaners arrive, do not leave a vague lump sum unless you know the company will divide it fairly. Either tip each cleaner directly or write a short note that says how the total should be split.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Here is the simple math. If your cleaning bill is $240 and you want to leave a 15% tip, the tip is $36. For a two-person crew, that is $18 each. For a three-person crew, it is $12 each. If one person stayed late, handled the oven, cleaned pet messes, or took on an add-on task, you can give that person more.
Cash works well for crew splits. If you tip digitally through a booking platform, check whether you can assign the tip to the crew or whether it goes into a general payout. A good company should be able to explain this clearly.
Recurring Cleaners: Tip Every Visit or Give a Holiday Bonus?
For recurring service, tipping every visit is optional. If the cleaner comes every week or every two weeks and the price is already set for the relationship, many homeowners tip occasionally for extra effort and then give a larger holiday bonus.
A practical recurring-service approach looks like this:

- Weekly or biweekly cleaner: tip $10 to $20 when the cleaner handles something beyond the usual scope, such as extra pet hair, a guest-room reset, or a messy kitchen after hosting.
- Monthly cleaner: tip $10 to $25 for strong service because each visit usually involves more buildup.
- Long-term cleaner: give a year-end bonus equal to one normal cleaning visit when your budget allows.
If your regular cleaning costs $160 every two weeks, a holiday bonus of $160 is a strong and customary thank-you. If that is not in your budget, give what you can and include a written note. For a cleaner who has protected your floors, learned your home, worked around pets, and kept a consistent schedule, a direct thank-you matters.
Deep Cleaning, Move-Out Cleaning, and Heavy Jobs
Deep cleaning is not just a longer version of standard cleaning. A standard clean usually covers visible surfaces: counters, sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, floors, dusting, trash, and general kitchen cleanup. A deep clean often adds baseboards, door trim, cabinet fronts, soap buildup, hard-water marks, light fixtures, vents, appliance exteriors, and detail work around edges and corners.
In 2026, deep cleaning commonly costs around $200 to $400, with heavier deep cleans, move-out cleaning, and neglected homes often reaching $250 to $700 or more. Move-in and move-out cleans often run $250 to $500+ in higher-cost markets, especially when appliance interiors, inside cabinets, window tracks, closets, garage sweeping, and trash removal are included.
For these jobs, use 15% to 20% as your normal tipping range. Tip toward the high end when the cleaners face heavy grease, pet accidents, hard-water buildup, lots of clutter, a short deadline, or a home that has not been cleaned in months. Tip lower, or not at all, if the company missed agreed scope items and did not correct them.

When It Is Really Post-Construction Cleaning, Not House Cleaning
This is where homeowners often underestimate the work. After a remodel, the house may look ready because the cabinets are installed, the paint is dry, and the floor is uncovered. But construction dust behaves differently from ordinary household dust. It gets into cabinet boxes, drawer slides, return grilles, closet shelving, window tracks, light fixtures, and the small gaps where new trim meets old surfaces.
On our job sites, we do not treat post-construction cleaning as a basic maid-service appointment. The sequence matters. Dust-producing punch-list work should be complete first: drywall touch-ups, sanding, paint corrections, tile cuts, trim scribing, and hardware drilling. If you clean before those tasks are done, you pay twice.
Residential post-construction cleaning commonly runs around $300 to $700 for many remodels and new-build handoffs, but large or dust-heavy projects can exceed that. The crew may need HEPA-filter vacuuming, microfiber dusting, adhesive or paint cleanup, glass scraping with non-scratch tools, cabinet interior cleaning, floor protection, and multiple passes. A regular vacuum and a scented all-purpose spray are not enough for fine construction dust.
For tipping, use 20% as a fair target when the cleaners perform real post-construction detail work. On a $500 post-remodel clean, that is $100. For a two-person crew, you could hand each cleaner $50. If the job was smaller but still dusty, $30 to $50 per cleaner is a useful rule.

Before the Cleaner Arrives After a Remodel
A better clean starts before the cleaning crew walks in. Remove loose construction debris, nails, fasteners, packaging, and scrap material. Ask your contractor which products are safe for new finishes, especially natural stone, hardwood, grout, stainless steel, glass, specialty tile, and matte cabinet paint. Replace or protect HVAC filters so the system does not keep recirculating fine dust after the home is cleaned.
New finishes also need cure time. Fresh paint, grout, caulk, sealers, floor finish, and countertops may have product-specific cleaning restrictions for the first few days. Harsh chemicals can damage new surfaces before the homeowner ever gets to enjoy them.
What Affects the Tip Amount?
The tip should reflect more than the invoice total. Two homes can both cost $220 to clean but require very different levels of labor.
Increase the tip when the cleaner handles:
- Heavy pet hair, pet accidents, litter tracking, or odor problems.
- Hard-water buildup on glass, tile, fixtures, or shower doors.
- Grease inside or around appliances.
- Lots of clutter that slows access to surfaces.
- Extra bathrooms, guest turnover, or hosting cleanup.
- Interior cabinet cleaning, appliance interiors, baseboards, vents, blinds, or window tracks.
- Short-notice scheduling or a same-day request.
- Renovation dust, drywall dust, sawdust, or paint residue.
You can tip less when the cleaner is an owner-operator charging a premium rate and the job was exactly within scope. You can also skip the tip when the work was incomplete, careless, or damaging. If there is a problem, give the company a chance to correct it before you decide the final payment and tip.
Owner-Operator vs Agency Cleaner
A self-employed cleaner or owner-operator sets the price, buys the supplies, manages the schedule, pays insurance if they carry it, and keeps the business profit. Because of that, tipping is more optional. Still, a tip is appreciated when the owner-operator works late, squeezes you in, handles a difficult home, or adds tasks without nickel-and-diming the invoice.
Agency cleaners are different. They may not set prices, and they may receive only part of the fee you pay. If a cleaning company charges $220, the cleaner is not necessarily taking home $220. In that case, a direct tip can make a real difference, especially for a crew that does careful work consistently.
If you are unsure, ask one direct question: “Do tips go directly to the cleaners who worked in my home?” The answer will tell you whether to tip through the platform, leave cash, or hand money to each cleaner directly.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
DIY cleaning makes sense when the home is already maintained, the scope is light, and you have the right tools. A homeowner can handle normal dusting, vacuuming, mopping, counters, bathrooms, laundry, and basic appliance wipe-downs with a good vacuum, microfiber cloths, mop system, bathroom cleaner, glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, gloves, trash bags, and scrub brushes.

DIY becomes less efficient when the job requires detail, speed, or specialty handling. Hire a pro for move-out cleaning, neglected bathrooms, heavy grease, hard-water removal, large homes, rental turnover, pre-listing cleaning, post-remodel dust, or a tight deadline before guests, photos, final walkthrough, or move-in.
A standard cleaner may spend 2 to 4 hours in an average home depending on square footage, bathrooms, pets, and clutter. A deep clean can take 4 to 8+ hours or require a two-person crew. A post-construction clean may need multiple passes: one rough clean after major work, one detail clean after punch-list items, and a final wipe-down after air settles.
If your time is worth more than the savings, hire the pro. If the home has new finishes or construction dust, hire someone who understands those surfaces. The cost of damaging new stone, hardwood, grout, glass, or cabinet paint can be far higher than the cleaning bill.

Cleaning sounds simple until new materials, dust, and chemicals enter the picture. For ordinary house cleaning, ask whether the cleaner brings supplies or uses yours. If you prefer lower-odor or safer chemical choices, look for products that meet recognized safer-product programs and confirm they are compatible with your surfaces.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For construction or remodel dust, ask whether the crew uses a HEPA-filter vacuum. Fine dust should be captured, not blown around the room. Workers may also need gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators depending on the dust, ventilation, and cleaning products in use. Safety data sheets matter when stronger chemicals, solvents, adhesives, or specialty cleaners are involved.
Do not move into a newly built or substantially remodeled space just because it looks clean. Some projects require final inspection approval or a Certificate of Occupancy before legal occupancy. Cleaning helps with readiness, but it does not replace code compliance, final inspections, permit closure, smoke and carbon monoxide requirements, safe egress, handrails, guards, electrical completion, plumbing completion, or HVAC readiness.
If you are cleaning before a final walkthrough, separate cosmetic cleaning from inspection readiness. A spotless kitchen does not solve an open electrical item. A clean stairwell does not fix a missing guardrail. The contractor, homeowner, and cleaner each have different responsibilities.
Common Tipping Mistakes to Avoid
The biggest mistake is tipping by habit instead of matching the tip to the job. A $10 tip may be fine for a light recurring clean, but it is thin for a difficult $500 move-out clean with appliance interiors and heavy bathroom buildup. On the other hand, a large percentage tip is not required every two weeks if you already plan to give a meaningful holiday bonus.

Another mistake is failing to declutter. Cleaners can clean surfaces they can reach. If counters, floors, beds, desks, and bathroom vanities are covered with personal items, the visit turns into pickup time. That reduces the time available for actual cleaning and can make the final result feel weaker.
Scope confusion is also common. Before the appointment, confirm whether the quote includes appliance interiors, inside cabinets, baseboards, windows, window tracks, laundry, dishes, trash removal, pet messes, garage sweeping, and outdoor areas. If you add those items on site, expect to pay more and tip accordingly.
For remodels, the most expensive mistake is hiring a standard house cleaner for post-construction dust without confirming the equipment and sequence. Ask about HEPA vacuuming, microfiber detail dusting, debris limits, floor protection, and safe products for new finishes. If the crew is not set up for construction dust, find a cleaner who is.
Bottom Line
For most homeowners in 2026, a fair house cleaner tip is simple: 10% to 20% for a one-time standard clean, 15% to 20% for deep or move-out cleaning, $10 to $20 per cleaner for strong recurring service, and 20% or $30 to $50 per cleaner for difficult post-remodel or post-construction work.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip a house cleaner for a standard cleaning?
For a one-time standard cleaning, tip 10% to 20% of the bill. On a $180 cleaning, that is $18 to $36. For recurring service, $10 to $20 per cleaner is common when the work is strong.
Do I need to tip a house cleaner every time?
No. For recurring cleaners, many homeowners tip occasionally for extra work and give a holiday bonus instead. A common holiday bonus is the cost of one regular cleaning visit, adjusted for your budget and relationship.
How much should I tip for a deep clean or move-out clean?
Tip 15% to 20% for deep cleaning or move-out cleaning. If the bill is $300, a fair tip is $45 to $60. If the job is $500 and includes heavy soil, appliance interiors, cabinets, or tight timing, $75 to $100 is reasonable.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I tip each cleaner separately if a crew comes?
Yes, when possible. If the total tip is $36 for a two-person crew, give $18 to each cleaner or leave a written note saying how to split it. Cash is easiest for clear crew splits.
Do you tip a self-employed house cleaner?
Tipping an owner-operator is optional because they set their own rates, but it is still appreciated for exceptional work, short-notice scheduling, pet messes, heavy buildup, renovation dust, or added tasks outside the quote.
How much should I tip for post-construction cleaning after a remodel?
For real post-construction or post-remodel cleaning, tip around 20% or $30 to $50 per cleaner when the crew handles fine dust, HEPA vacuuming, cabinet interiors, adhesive residue, appliance detail, and multiple cleaning passes.
