If you have a possum in the yard, the first thing to know is this: in North America, the animal is technically an opossum, and it usually does not need to be trapped or killed. Most opossums are nocturnal visitors passing through for pet food, fallen fruit, garbage, compost, birdseed, water, or a quiet shelter under a deck, shed, porch, garage, or crawl space.
The humane way to get rid of opossums is to make your yard stop functioning like a food court and a motel. Start with a 3-night reset: remove every outdoor food and water source, secure trash, clean up fruit and birdseed, close pet doors at dusk, keep pets inside or leashed after dark, and watch for activity. If the opossum is only crossing the property at night, it will often move on once the easy meal disappears.
On our job sites, we treat recurring opossum problems as an exterior-envelope and site-management issue, not an extermination issue. A weak shed base, open deck skirt, broken crawl-space vent, loose lattice panel, or unsealed garbage area will keep inviting animals back. The five humane methods below focus on the permanent fixes: attractant control, shelter removal, construction-grade exclusion, short-term deterrents, and licensed help when trapping, injury, young animals, or local law makes DIY the wrong move.
1. Remove Food and Water Attractants First
Most opossum problems start with easy calories. Opossums are opportunistic. They eat insects, slugs, rodents, snakes, carrion, overripe produce, pet food, compost scraps, and spilled birdseed. That makes them useful in the ecosystem, but it also means a normal backyard can accidentally become a dependable feeding route.

Before buying traps, repellents, or gadgets, do this for three consecutive nights:
- Bring pet food and water bowls indoors before dusk.
- Lock garbage lids with clips, bungee cords, or animal-resistant cans.
- Clean up fallen fruit, nuts, berries, and overripe garden produce daily.
- Use a sealed compost bin instead of an open pile.
- Sweep spilled birdseed under feeders and reduce nighttime seed availability.
- Close pet doors at dusk or switch to an electronic pet door.
- Drain or cover standing water where practical.
- Store grill grease trays, fish bait, and livestock feed in sealed containers.
This is usually the cheapest fix. If you already have decent trash cans and storage bins, DIY attractant control can cost $0 to $75. If you need locking lids, bungee cords, a sealed compost bin, or lidded storage containers, the bill may be closer to $75 to $150.
Do Not Forget Pet Doors
Opossums can enter through pet doors when food is available inside. If you have a mudroom, garage, laundry room, or kitchen with a pet bowl near the door, treat that as part of the wildlife pathway. Close the flap at dusk for at least one week after the last sighting. If the problem repeats, install an electronic pet door keyed to your pet’s collar.
When Coexistence Is Reasonable
If the opossum is simply walking along the fence line at night and is not denning, entering the house, bothering poultry, eating garden produce, or getting cornered by pets, the most humane answer may be to remove attractants and wait. Opossums often move through a territory instead of staying in one yard permanently.
2. Eliminate Denning Shelter Under Decks, Sheds, Porches, and Crawl Spaces
Food brings opossums into the yard. Shelter makes them stay. Quiet, dark, low spaces are the usual suspects: open deck framing, raised sheds, porch voids, loose skirting, brush piles, stacked firewood, garages with gaps at the weatherstrip, and crawl spaces with broken vents.
Walk the property in daylight and look for openings larger than about 3 inches, disturbed soil, hair on rough edges, flattened grass paths, droppings, or a musky odor near a sheltered area. Do not seal an opening immediately if you suspect an animal is inside. Closing an occupied space can trap the animal and create a worse problem inside the structure.
Use the Newspaper or Dust Test Before Sealing
Before closing a suspected den opening, loosely plug it with crumpled newspaper or lightly dust the entrance with flour or dry soil. Check it after dark and again the next morning. If the plug is pushed out or the dust shows tracks, the opening is active. Repeat for 1 to 2 nights if you are unsure.
If activity continues, if you hear young animals, or if the opening leads under a home, porch, or occupied structure, call a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator. A professional should confirm the species, check for young, identify all entry points, and use legal animal-handling methods before exclusion.

For simple outdoor shelter, remove the invitation:
- Raise firewood at least 12 inches off the ground and keep it away from fence lines.
- Remove unused lumber, pallets, tarps, and debris piles.
- Trim shrubs so there is visible clearance at the base.
- Repair garage door weatherstripping with gaps greater than 1 inch.
- Close shed doors and repair rotted trim at the base.
- Keep dense compost, brush, and leaf piles away from decks and crawl-space vents.
Basic cleanup may cost nothing except time. If repairs are needed, expect small material costs: $15 to $40 for weatherstripping, $20 to $60 for simple vent screen materials, and $30 to $150 for basic hardware cloth, fasteners, gloves, zip ties, stakes, and sealant.

3. Build Opossum Exclusion Barriers That Actually Hold
Exclusion is the permanent solution. Repellents fade. Trapping creates legal and ethical issues. But a properly built barrier changes the structure so the animal cannot get back in.
For deck skirting, porch voids, shed bases, and crawl-space openings, use galvanized hardware cloth, not chicken wire or lightweight plastic netting. Chicken wire bends too easily, and plastic mesh can be chewed, torn, or pulled loose. We typically look for 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth for small openings and perimeter work, with corrosion-resistant screws and washers or heavy-duty staples secured into sound framing.
How to Build a Buried Mesh Skirt
For a shed, porch, or deck perimeter, a practical exclusion detail looks like this:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Use 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth.
- Fasten the top edge to framing, blocking, or masonry with corrosion-resistant fasteners.
- Extend the mesh down to grade.
- Bury the lower edge 8 to 12 inches where soil conditions allow.
- Where digging is difficult, bend the bottom outward in an L-shape apron 12 to 18 inches along the ground and pin it securely.
- Backfill and compact soil or cover the apron with stone, pavers, or compacted gravel.
- Overlap seams at least 6 inches and fasten the overlap every 6 to 8 inches.
For high-value garden beds, use stronger fencing. A reliable garden barrier is about 4 feet tall, buried 1 to 2 feet, and angled outward. The top 12 inches can be bent outward at roughly 90 degrees to discourage climbing. That is more work than sprinkling a repellent, but it is also the type of detail that keeps animals out after rain, irrigation, and normal yard use.
Crawl-Space and Vent Repairs Need Building Sense
Crawl-space work deserves special care. You cannot simply board over vents and call it fixed. Crawl spaces may need code-compliant ventilation or an approved sealed crawl-space approach, depending on the home and jurisdiction. Exterior openings also need durable materials that resist corrosion, moisture, soil contact, and animal pressure.
For a damaged crawl-space vent, the repair should preserve required ventilation or follow the local approved alternative. Use metal vent covers, hardware cloth backing, masonry anchors where needed, and sealant compatible with the surrounding material. If the frame is rotted, replace the frame rather than fastening mesh to weak wood.
For larger deck or shed perimeters, DIY exclusion materials commonly run $150 to $500 or more, depending on linear footage, mesh gauge, access, and whether you need trim boards, masonry anchors, gravel, pavers, or drainage corrections. Professional exclusion costs more, but it is often cheaper than repeated trapping plus later crawl-space repair.
| Fix | Typical 2026 Cost | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| 3-night attractant reset | $0-$75 | First step for most yards with nighttime visitors |
| Basic DIY exclusion supplies | $30-$150 | Small gaps, vents, short shed sections, minor skirting repairs |
| Larger DIY deck or shed barrier | $150-$500+ | Longer perimeters needing hardware cloth, fasteners, trenching, and finish trim |
| Wildlife inspection | $100-$300 | Unclear entry points, noises under structures, possible young, repeated activity |
| Professional opossum or wildlife removal | $150-$600 typical | Animal handling, trapping where legal, exclusion planning, basic repairs |
| Complex attic or envelope repair | $500-$3,500 | Delayed problems involving contamination, insulation, repairs, and broader wildlife-proofing |
4. Use Short-Term Deterrents Correctly
Deterrents can help during the few nights when you are removing food sources or waiting for an animal to leave a den area, but they are not the backbone of a humane opossum plan. Frightening devices and repellents are inconsistent. Rain, irrigation, habit, hunger, and shelter pressure all reduce their effectiveness.
Use deterrents as temporary pressure, not as a permanent system. Good short-term options include:
- Motion-activated lights aimed at a specific travel path or den entrance.
- Motion-activated sprinklers near gardens or compost areas.
- Temporary radio noise near an unoccupied shed or porch opening.
- Removing hiding cover so the area feels exposed.
- Closing pet doors and garage doors before dusk.
Use these for 3 to 7 nights while also removing attractants and preparing exclusion. Do not rely on mothballs, ammonia-soaked rags, poisons, or unverified chemical repellents. Mothballs are pesticides with label restrictions, ammonia is unpleasant and unreliable, and poisons create serious risk for pets, non-target wildlife, and scavengers. Poison is also the wrong tool for a beneficial native animal that may simply be passing through.

Keep Pets Out of the Conflict
Most opossum conflicts happen when a dog corners the animal. During the correction period, keep pets indoors at night or take them out on a leash. If your dog has already had contact with wildlife, check for bites or scratches and call your veterinarian. For human bites or scratches, wash the wound and contact a medical professional or local public-health authority.
Rabies in opossums is considered rare compared with higher-risk wildlife, but rarity is not a reason to handle a wild animal. Treat direct contact as a health and safety issue, not as a backyard nuisance.
5. Call a Licensed Wildlife Professional When Removal Is the Humane Option
There are times when DIY prevention is not enough. Call a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator when an opossum is trapped in a window well, garage, fence, crawl space, or wall cavity; appears injured or sick; may have young under a structure; is repeatedly entering an occupied building; or is threatening poultry or small livestock. Also call when your state or city requires licensed handling.
Ask for more than a trap. A competent wildlife company should provide an inspection, written estimate, species identification, entry-point map, animal-handling plan, young-check protocol, sanitation scope, exclusion materials, warranty terms, and proof of licensing and insurance. If the proposal is only “set a cage and relocate it,” keep asking questions.
Relocation Laws Vary by State
Do not assume you can trap an opossum and release it at a park, field, or wooded area. Relocation rules vary sharply by state and can be more restrictive than homeowners expect. Some states prohibit homeowners from relocating trapped wildlife off their property. Some require nuisance wildlife to be released or euthanized on the property. Others allow off-site release only with conditions such as same-county release, minimum acreage, and written landowner permission.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is also an animal-welfare concern. Relocated wildlife may struggle to find food, water, shelter, and territory, and may spread disease or conflict into another area. That is why exclusion and attractant control are usually better than trapping.
What Professional Removal Should Cost in 2026
For straightforward opossum or small wildlife jobs, national 2026 pricing commonly falls around $150 to $600. Possum-specific removal is often reported around $150 to $350 on the low end and $250 to $500 in other common price ranges. A wildlife inspection alone often runs $100 to $300, with some companies crediting that fee toward the job.
Costs rise when the animal has entered a crawl space, attic, wall, or porch assembly and the work includes sanitation, insulation removal, vent repair, deck skirting, odor control, or broader wildlife-proofing. Small attic animal removal jobs can run $500 to $1,500. Larger trapping and attic repair projects can reach $1,500 to $3,500. Yard problems are cheaper when handled early because you are fixing access before it becomes contamination and building repair.
DIY vs. Hiring a Pro
DIY is appropriate when the opossum is outside, healthy, not trapped, not nesting under a structure, and your plan is limited to removing attractants, cleaning the yard, managing pet food, and installing simple exclusion after you have confirmed the space is empty.

Safety, Permits, and Construction Details Homeowners Miss
Most opossum work does not require a building permit if you are cleaning up attractants, adding a small mesh barrier, or repairing a minor vent screen. Permits become more likely when the work changes a fence, deck, porch, structural framing, retaining wall, drainage pattern, or crawl-space system. Fence rules are local. Many cities regulate height, location, corner visibility, materials, and property-line placement. Before building a 4-foot garden fence or modifying a boundary fence, check your local fence rules.
For crawl spaces, do not block required openings without understanding ventilation, moisture, combustion-air, and local code requirements. A bad repair can keep opossums out while trapping moisture in. That trade is not worth it. Use durable materials, preserve drainage, and avoid burying untreated wood or creating a soil-to-wood contact point that invites rot.
For deck and porch skirting, leave access panels where future inspection is needed. We prefer removable panels fastened with exterior-rated screws rather than permanently burying every service point. If plumbing cleanouts, hose bib lines, electrical junctions, or sump discharge components are behind the skirt, the exclusion should still allow maintenance access.

The Bottom Line
The best way to get rid of possums in your yard is not to chase them. Remove the food, remove the shelter, and close the access points with materials that belong on a building, not temporary garden netting. In many yards, a 3-night attractant reset solves the problem. For recurring activity under decks, sheds, porches, or crawl spaces, construction-grade exclusion is the humane long-term fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest humane way to get rid of a possum in the yard?
Remove food and water sources for three nights: pet food, garbage access, fallen fruit, birdseed, compost scraps, and open water. Close pet doors at dusk and keep pets leashed or indoors at night. If the opossum is only visiting for food, it often moves on quickly.
Should I trap and relocate an opossum?
Usually no. Relocation can be illegal, restricted, or inhumane depending on your state. If trapping seems necessary, check local wildlife rules first or hire a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator.
What material keeps opossums out from under a deck or shed?
Use galvanized 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch hardware cloth secured to solid framing or masonry with corrosion-resistant fasteners. Bury the bottom 8 to 12 inches or bend it outward into a 12- to 18-inch ground apron and pin it securely.

Are opossums dangerous to pets or people?
Opossums are usually not aggressive and rabies is rare in opossums, but you should not handle wildlife. Most conflicts happen when dogs corner them. Keep pets indoors or leashed at night during the correction period and treat bites or scratches as medical concerns.
How much does professional opossum removal cost?
In 2026, straightforward opossum or wildlife removal commonly runs about $150 to $600. Inspections often cost $100 to $300. Costs can exceed $1,000 when crawl-space repair, sanitation, insulation, or broader wildlife-proofing is needed.
Do repellents work on possums?
Repellents and frightening devices are inconsistent and should only be used as short-term pressure for 3 to 7 nights. Attractant control and physical exclusion are more reliable.
