The best range hood is not always the one with the biggest CFM number or the flashiest stainless finish. It is the hood that captures smoke, grease, steam, heat, and combustion pollutants before they spread through the kitchen, and it has to do that without sounding so loud that nobody uses it.
For most homeowners, our first recommendation is a ducted under-cabinet or wall-mount hood sized at least as wide as the cooktop, usually 30 or 36 inches wide, with a practical airflow range of about 300 to 600 CFM. That gives most kitchens enough ventilation without automatically turning the project into a major mechanical redesign. For heavy gas cooking, frequent searing, wok cooking, island cooktops, or open-concept layouts, the right answer may be wider, deeper, quieter, and more expensive.
On our kitchen remodels, we treat the range hood as part appliance and part mechanical system. The appliance matters, but the duct path, exterior termination, electrical work, mounting height, cabinet layout, and makeup air requirements matter just as much. A $500 hood installed badly can perform worse than a modest $200 hood installed correctly.
Below are the six range hood categories we recommend most often, with realistic 2026 pricing, where each one works, and where it does not.

Quick Picks: The 6 Best Range Hood Types
If you want the short version, choose by kitchen layout and cooking style first. Brand and finish come second.
| Best For | Recommended Hood Type | Typical Width | Practical CFM Range | Typical Installed Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most remodels | Ducted under-cabinet stainless hood | 30 or 36 in. | 400-750 CFM | $500-$1,500 |
| Small budget replacement | Ductless or convertible under-cabinet hood | 30 in. | 160-300 CFM | $200-$800 |
| Open wall with no upper cabinet | Wall-mount chimney hood | 30 or 36 in. | 380-600 CFM | $700-$2,100 |
| Island cooktop | Ceiling-mounted island hood | 36-42 in. | 600-900 CFM | $1,200-$3,500+ |
| Custom wood hood surround | Range hood insert or liner | 28-46 in. | 300-1,200 CFM | $900-$5,000+ |
| Tight kitchens needing microwave space | Over-the-range microwave vent | 30 in. | 250-400 CFM | $400-$1,200 |
Nationally, range hood installation in 2026 commonly averages around $575, with many standard jobs landing between $300 and $850. A simple like-for-like swap can stay under $500 to $800 installed. Adding new ductwork, cutting an exterior wall or roof, changing cabinets, or installing makeup air can push the job into the $800 to $2,100 range or higher. Premium island and custom insert projects can exceed that once framing, finish carpentry, electrical, and mechanical work are included.
1. Best Overall: Ducted Under-Cabinet Stainless Hood
For the average American kitchen remodel, this is the category we trust most. A good ducted under-cabinet hood mounts below an upper cabinet, vents through the wall or up through the cabinet, and sends cooking exhaust outdoors. Look for a 30-inch model over a 30-inch range or a 36-inch model over a 36-inch range. If the cabinet layout allows it, matching or slightly exceeding the range width improves capture.
In this category, we like the Hauslane, Cosmo, Kobe, Broan, and similar stainless under-cabinet class: 400 to 750 CFM, dishwasher-safe baffle filters, LED lighting, multiple fan speeds, and a rectangular or round duct connection. For most families, a hood in the 400 to 600 CFM range is the practical sweet spot. It is strong enough for normal gas or electric cooking, but it may avoid some of the complexity that comes with very high airflow.

Under-cabinet hoods work well because the hood sits close to the cooking surface and usually benefits from surrounding cabinets and a back wall. Those surfaces help guide the plume of smoke and steam upward into the capture area. In real kitchens, capture area often matters as much as raw CFM.
We especially like baffle filters in this class. They are durable, easy to wash, and better suited to higher-grease cooking than flimsy mesh filters. Mesh filters are fine on lighter-duty hoods, but baffles are easier to live with in a busy kitchen.
What To Budget
Appliance pricing commonly runs from about $250 to $900 for a solid midrange ducted under-cabinet hood. Installed cost is often $500 to $1,500 depending on whether the existing duct and electrical connections can be reused. If we have to open a wall, install rigid duct, add a roof or wall cap, and repair finishes, the price can climb quickly.
Contractor note: do not spend all the money on the hood and then choke it with a poor duct path. A 6-inch or 8-inch rigid duct, short run, smooth turns, sealed joints, and a proper exterior cap usually beat a long, undersized, flex-duct route every time.
2. Best Budget Pick: Convertible Under-Cabinet Hood
A convertible under-cabinet hood is the right budget answer when you need a clean replacement, have limited cabinet space, and cannot easily add an exterior duct. These hoods can often be installed in ducted or ductless mode. In ductless mode, air passes through grease and charcoal filters before returning to the kitchen.
Broan-NuTone-style 30-inch under-cabinet models are common in this category. Basic units can start around $100 to $200 for the appliance. Installed, a straightforward replacement may land around $200 to $800 depending on wiring, cabinet fit, and whether the old unit comes out cleanly.
Where It Makes Sense
This is a practical choice for apartments, condos with restricted exterior penetrations, rental kitchens, light electric cooking, and small projects where the budget does not support ductwork. It can help with grease and odors, especially if the filters are maintained.
It is not equal to a ducted hood. A ductless hood does not exhaust moisture, heat, carbon monoxide, or nitrogen dioxide outdoors. That matters most over gas ranges. If the home has a gas cooktop and the kitchen can be vented outside, we recommend ducted ventilation whenever practical.

Plan on replacing charcoal filters periodically. The exact schedule depends on the model and cooking habits, but a household that cooks daily should not treat charcoal filters as permanent. Also check the fan sound rating. A cheap hood that is unpleasant at high speed tends to stay off, which defeats the point.
3. Best Wall-Mount Pick: Ducted Chimney Hood
A wall-mount chimney hood is the cleanest solution when the range sits on an open wall without upper cabinets above it. These hoods include a visible vertical chimney cover that hides the duct as it runs toward the ceiling or upper wall. They are common in modern and transitional kitchen remodels because they provide a finished focal point without custom cabinetry.
For most 30-inch and 36-inch ranges, we look for a ducted wall-mount hood around 380 to 600 CFM. Cosmo, Zephyr-style, Broan, ZLINE, and similar models are common options in this space. Appliance-only pricing often falls between $250 and $900 for midrange stainless units, while designer finishes and higher-CFM models can run much higher.
Best Use Case
This is a strong pick for homeowners who cook often and want better performance than a ductless hood or over-the-range microwave. The wall behind the range helps contain the cooking plume, and the chimney design usually gives us a more direct duct path than complicated cabinet retrofits.

Before ordering, measure ceiling height, hood height, chimney extension range, and the recommended mounting distance above the cooking surface. Many hoods are designed for an installation height around 24 to 36 inches above the cooktop, but the appliance manual governs. Mounting too high lets smoke and grease escape around the hood.
Installed Cost
A wall-mount chimney hood usually costs more to install than a simple under-cabinet replacement. Expect $700 to $2,100 in many remodels, especially if new ductwork, drywall repair, blocking, a dedicated electrical connection, or exterior venting is needed. Roof venting usually costs more than a short wall vent because flashing and weatherproofing must be handled carefully.
4. Best Island Pick: Wider Ceiling-Mounted Island Hood
Island hoods need more respect than they usually get. An island cooktop has no wall or side cabinets to help contain smoke. Air from people walking by, HVAC registers, ceiling fans, and open windows can push the cooking plume away from the hood. That is why we often size island hoods wider and deeper than the cooktop.
For a 30-inch island cooktop, a 36-inch hood is often the better choice. For a 36-inch cooktop, a 42-inch hood may be worth considering if the room can visually support it. Common airflow targets are 600 to 900 CFM, especially for gas cooking or frequent high-heat work.

Why It Costs More
An island hood hangs from the ceiling, so the installation has to deal with structure, alignment, duct routing, electrical, ceiling finish, and often attic or floor framing above. The hood must be solidly anchored. A loose or poorly braced island hood is not acceptable.
Installed cost commonly starts around $1,200 and can reach $3,500 or more. If the duct has to run across joists, through a roof, or through finished second-floor space, the project may need carpentry, drywall, roofing, and painting. If the hood exceeds 400 CFM, the makeup air question also has to be answered before you buy.
Our Job-Site Advice
For island cooking, buy for quiet performance at the speeds you will actually use. Sound is measured in sones. As a rough reference, 1 sone is similar to a refrigerator, and normal conversation is around 4 sones. A hood that can move serious air at a tolerable sound level is more useful than a loud high-CFM hood that only looks powerful on paper.
5. Best Custom Look: Range Hood Insert For A Wood Surround
If you want a built-in hood that disappears into custom cabinetry or a decorative wood surround, you need a range hood insert. The insert is the mechanical unit: fan, lights, filters, and controls. The cabinetmaker builds the surround, and the installer provides the duct path, liner clearances, electrical connection, and exterior termination.
Common insert brands include Broan, Best, ZLINE, and similar pro-style options. Sizes vary widely, but many inserts are designed for 30, 36, 42, and 48-inch cooking areas. Airflow can range from about 300 CFM to 1,200 CFM depending on the cooking appliance and blower design.
When It Is Worth It
An insert is the right choice for high-end remodels where the hood needs to match the cabinetry rather than look like a freestanding stainless appliance. It is also a good way to build a larger capture area over a serious range. If the homeowner has a 36-inch or 48-inch gas range and cooks aggressively, a properly designed insert and surround can perform very well.
The key phrase is properly designed. The cabinet opening, liner, fire clearances, duct diameter, blower location, and mounting height need to match the manufacturer’s requirements. This is not the place to guess in the field after the cabinets arrive.
Cost Range
The insert itself might cost $400 to $2,000 or more. Once custom carpentry, finishing, ducting, electrical, and possible makeup air are included, full installed cost can run from $900 to $5,000+. Copper, plaster, wood, or highly detailed designer surrounds can go beyond that.
6. Best Space Saver: Over-The-Range Microwave Vent
An over-the-range microwave is a compromise, not a performance pick. We use it when the kitchen truly needs the microwave above the range because counter space and wall cabinet space are limited. It can be the right answer in a compact kitchen, but it is rarely the best ventilation answer.
Most over-the-range microwave vents are 30 inches wide and often move around 250 to 400 CFM. Some can be ducted outdoors; others are installed in recirculating mode with charcoal filters. Ducted is strongly preferred when possible.
Where It Falls Short
The capture area is usually shallower than a dedicated hood, especially over the front burners. That means steam and smoke can roll past the appliance before the fan catches it. The fan may also be loud at higher speeds, and filter maintenance is easy to forget.
If you mainly boil water, reheat food, and cook on an electric or induction range, an over-the-range microwave may be acceptable. If you frequently sear meat, stir-fry, blacken fish, use a griddle, or cook on high-BTU gas burners, a dedicated ducted hood is usually the better investment.

Budget
Expect appliance pricing in the low hundreds for basic models and more for premium convection or sensor-cooking units. Installed cost often lands between $400 and $1,200 depending on electrical, cabinet fit, vent orientation, and whether exterior ducting already exists.
How To Choose The Right CFM
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It measures how much air the fan can move under rated conditions. It is useful, but it is not the whole story.
For gas cooking, a common rule of thumb is roughly 1 CFM for every 100 BTU of burner output. A range with 50,000 total BTU would point toward about 500 CFM. For wall-mounted hoods, another practical rule is about 100 CFM per linear foot of hood width. A 30-inch hood is 2.5 feet wide, which suggests about 250 CFM as a basic starting point. For island hoods, the rule often increases to about 150 CFM per linear foot because capture is harder.
These are starting points, not final design. A tight home, long duct run, multiple elbows, high-output range, or island layout can change the answer. So can local code.

Many jurisdictions following the International Residential Code require makeup air for domestic range hoods capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM. The basic idea is simple: if a hood pulls a lot of air out of a house, replacement air has to come from somewhere. Without a planned makeup air path, a powerful hood can depressurize the home, backdraft combustion appliances, pull air through fireplaces, or make doors hard to open.
Makeup air can add significant cost because it may require a ducted intake, motorized damper, controls, tempering strategy, and coordination with HVAC. Before buying a 600, 900, or 1,200 CFM hood, ask your contractor or local building department what applies in your area.
Ducted Vs Ductless: The Honest Difference
Ducted hoods exhaust air outdoors. Ductless hoods filter air and return it to the room. That difference matters.
A ducted hood can remove moisture, heat, odors, grease particles, smoke, and combustion byproducts from gas cooking. A ductless hood can catch some grease and reduce some odors, but it does not remove moisture, heat, carbon monoxide, or nitrogen dioxide outdoors. For indoor air quality, especially with gas cooking, ducted ventilation is the stronger choice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
We use ductless only when the building conditions make ducting impractical or cost-prohibitive. Examples include some condos, interior kitchens with no reasonable exterior path, or budget-limited replacements where the cooking load is light. Even then, we tell homeowners to use the fan early, maintain filters, and use other ventilation when available.
Installation Details That Decide Performance
The best range hood can be ruined by poor installation. Here are the details our crews check before ordering the appliance.
Width And Depth
The hood should be at least as wide as the cooking surface. A 30-inch range needs a 30-inch hood at minimum. A 36-inch range needs a 36-inch hood. For island installations, going 6 inches wider is often smart because the plume is less contained.
Duct Size And Route
Use rigid metal duct sized to the hood manufacturer’s instructions. Common residential duct sizes include 6-inch, 7-inch, 8-inch, or 10-inch round duct, or rectangular duct such as 3-1/4 by 10 inches on smaller hoods. Avoid long runs, unnecessary elbows, crushed transitions, and flexible duct. Every turn reduces effective airflow and increases noise.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Exterior Termination
A range hood should vent outdoors, not into an attic, crawlspace, soffit cavity, garage, or wall cavity. The termination needs a proper wall or roof cap with a damper, exterior sealant, and roof flashing where applicable. Exhausting warm, greasy, moisture-laden air into an attic is a mold and fire-risk problem.
Noise
Look at sones, not just CFM. If the spec sheet only advertises maximum airflow and hides sound ratings, be skeptical. In open-concept kitchens, quieter operation at normal cooking speeds is often more valuable than a screaming high-speed setting.
Filters
Baffle filters are common on higher-CFM stainless and pro-style hoods. Aluminum mesh filters are common on lower-cost models. Ductless installations also need charcoal filters. Clean grease filters regularly. A clogged filter reduces airflow and can hold cooking odors.

Hire a pro when the job involves new exterior ductwork, roof penetration, cutting masonry or siding, hardwiring changes, cabinet modification, island mounting, makeup air, or permit requirements. Also hire a pro if you are changing from ductless to ducted. That is not just an appliance swap; it is a mechanical installation.
For many range hood jobs, the crew may include a remodeler, electrician, HVAC contractor, roofer, or finish carpenter. That sounds like overkill until you see what goes wrong when a heavy island hood is poorly anchored or a roof cap leaks into fresh drywall.
Safety, Code, And Permit Notes
Code requirements vary by city and state, but several issues come up repeatedly. High-capacity hoods over 400 CFM may trigger makeup air requirements. Electrical work may require a permit or licensed electrician. New duct penetrations through exterior walls or roofs need proper weatherproofing and may need inspection. Gas ranges make ventilation more important because cooking can add combustion pollutants to the home.
Before we order a hood, we verify the manufacturer’s installation manual, local code requirements, cabinet dimensions, stud or joist locations, duct path, exterior cap location, and whether any combustion appliances could be affected by depressurization. Those checks are not paperwork for paperwork’s sake. They prevent expensive rework.

The most common mistake is buying by CFM alone. A 900 CFM fan connected to a bad duct path is not a great system. Capture area, hood depth, mounting height, duct size, filter type, and sound rating all matter.
The second mistake is choosing ductless mode over a gas range and assuming it provides the same protection as outdoor exhaust. It does not. Ductless may be better than no fan, but it is not the same category of performance.
We also see homeowners buy a high-CFM hood without budgeting for makeup air, mount the hood too high, vent into the attic, use flexible duct, forget charcoal filters, or default to an over-the-range microwave when the kitchen has room for a real hood.
Our Bottom Line
If you are remodeling a typical kitchen, start with a ducted under-cabinet or wall-mount hood in the 300 to 600 CFM range, sized at least as wide as the cooktop, with a short rigid duct to the exterior. That setup gives most homeowners the best balance of performance, cost, noise, and code simplicity.
Choose a budget convertible hood only when exterior ducting is not realistic or the cooking load is light. Choose an island hood with extra capture area and a serious installation budget. Choose an insert when custom cabinetry is the priority. Choose an over-the-range microwave only when space forces the tradeoff.
A range hood is one of those kitchen systems that should disappear into daily life. It should be easy to use, quiet enough to turn on, strong enough to capture the mess, and installed so the air actually leaves the house. Get those basics right, and the brand name matters a lot less.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size range hood do I need for a 30-inch or 36-inch range?
Use a hood at least as wide as the cooking surface. A 30-inch range needs at least a 30-inch hood, and a 36-inch range needs at least a 36-inch hood. For island cooktops, consider going 6 inches wider because there are no walls or cabinets to help capture smoke.
Is a ducted range hood better than a ductless range hood?
Yes. A ducted range hood exhausts moisture, heat, smoke, grease, and combustion pollutants outdoors. A ductless hood filters some grease and odors but returns air to the kitchen, so it does not remove moisture, carbon monoxide, or nitrogen dioxide outside.
Recommended Free Tools
How many CFM does a range hood need for a gas stove?
A common rule of thumb is about 1 CFM per 100 BTU of gas burner output. A 50,000 BTU range points toward roughly 500 CFM, but duct length, hood width, cooking style, and local makeup air requirements can change the final recommendation.
Do I need makeup air for a range hood over 400 CFM?
Many jurisdictions following the International Residential Code require makeup air for domestic range hoods over 400 CFM. Check with your local building department before buying a high-CFM hood, because makeup air can add ducting, dampers, controls, and HVAC coordination.
How much does range hood installation cost in 2026?
A typical range hood installation averages about $575 nationally, with many jobs between $300 and $850. Simple replacements may stay under $500 to $800 installed, while new ductwork, roof venting, island hoods, custom inserts, or makeup air can push costs to $2,100 or much more.
Is an over-the-range microwave as good as a dedicated range hood?
Usually no. An over-the-range microwave saves space, but its capture area is shallower and its fan is often weaker or louder than a dedicated hood. It can work for light cooking, but frequent searing, frying, wok cooking, or gas cooking is better served by a ducted range hood.
