A floodlight is a high-intensity fixture that spreads light over a broad area. In an LED model, the LED light source produces the light and the fixture’s optics direct it across the target area. Motion sensing and photocells are optional controls: a motion sensor can switch the light on when movement is detected, and a photocell can keep it off during daylight. How much area it covers, how bright it is, what weather it tolerates, and how it is wired all depend on the specific model.
What floodlights are used for
Floodlights provide broad-area illumination for functional and decorative purposes. Typical applications include building entrances, parking areas, work areas, sports venues, building facades and perimeter security. The word describes a lighting role and beam distribution rather than one lamp technology. LED, halogen, metal-halide and other floodlight types all exist. A general reference overview notes that LED floodlights have displaced many metal-halide sports lights, but that is a trend, not a rule that every floodlight application now uses LEDs.
Some products sold as floodlights are aimed at a specific surface or zone, while more tightly focused variants serve stage-lighting purposes. The term therefore covers a range of fixtures that share one trait: a wide, intense spread of light rather than a small, precise beam.
How a floodlight works
Every floodlight has three functional parts: a light source, optics that shape the output, and, in LED models, a driver that conditions the electrical supply.

Only need to use the included screws to fix on the exterior wall.
The light source
The light source produces light when supplied with electrical power. In an LED floodlight, the LED chips are the source. Light output is generated only while the fixture is energised, so the wiring and control arrangement determine when the light can operate.
The optics
The reflector or lens shapes and directs the output so that it covers an area. Beam spread matters. A broad distribution covers a wider space at a given intensity, while a narrower beam concentrates the same light into a smaller direction and reaches farther along that line. Choosing the wrong distribution is one of the most common reasons a floodlight appears too dim in one place and too glaring in another.
The LED driver
An LED floodlight contains an integrated driver that supplies the LED source with the electrical conditions it needs. Manufacturers offer LED floodlights with different wattages, beam angles, mounting options and supply requirements. These are product-specific details, not universal properties of floodlights, so they should be read from the model’s own documentation.

How motion sensors and photocells change operation
A standard floodlight stays on whenever it is powered and switched on. A motion-sensor floodlight adds a control system that decides when the light should run. The three control elements most often described in manufacturer documentation are the following.
Motion sensor
The motion sensor switches the light on when it detects movement. In one manufacturer example, a preselected time delay then determines when the light switches off again. Another manufacturer describes a combined motion/occupancy sensor and photocell with adjustable sensitivity and a test/time control. Detection range, sensitivity and timing differ between models, so the published figures for the exact product are the ones to use.
Photocell
A photocell can inhibit operation during daylight, so the light does not trigger when it is already bright outside. This is typically what prevents a motion floodlight from switching on at noon when a passing shadow crosses the sensor.

Time switch
A time switch sets how long the light stays on after activation. Where a product offers one, it is adjusted separately from the sensor’s sensitivity, so both should be checked during commissioning.
Reading a floodlight specification
When you compare floodlights, the key values are the area and beam distribution to be covered, light output, electrical supply compatibility, whether motion sensing or a photocell is useful, the environmental rating for the mounting position, and the installation method. Wattage on its own does not describe brightness or coverage.

| Specification | OLF 2RH value (Acuity Brands sheet, revision dated November 6, 2024) |
|---|---|
| Light output | 2,160 lumens |
| Power | 25 W |
| Input voltage | 120 V |
| Motion sensor detection angle | 180 degrees |
| Motion sensor forward detection | Up to 70 feet |
| Daylight control | Photocell to prevent daylight operation |
| On-duration control | Time switch to adjust how long the lights stay on |
| Location rating | Wet-location listing for the stated mounting conditions |
Dividing 2,160 lumens by 25 W gives about 86 lumens per watt for this product. That is simple arithmetic on the sheet’s figures, not a separately tested efficiency result.
Lumens and watts describe different things
Watts measure electrical power drawn. Lumens measure light output. Two floodlights with the same wattage can differ substantially in lumens, and efficiency, the lumens produced per watt, varies by design. LEDVANCE’s product page for its FLOODLIGHT SENSOR 10 family states “up to 145 lm/W”. That is a manufacturer product claim on an undated page accessed October 8, 2026, not an independently established industry average.
Weather ratings are model-specific
An IP rating states how well an enclosure resists dust and water, and the rating must match the mounting position. LEDVANCE’s product page shows an IP65 example, while noting that certain higher-wattage sensor variants have IP44 protection. Products within one family can therefore differ in weather protection, so check the rating of the exact model you intend to install.

Installation safety
A mains-powered floodlight can cause electric shock if it is handled while energised. Manufacturer guidance is consistent on this point. STEINEL’s instructions for its XLED Protect S floodlight state: “Disconnect the power supply before attempting any work on the unit.” LEDVANCE’s safety advice for its Floodlight Essential Sensor states: “All electrical connections must be made by a qualified person.”
The STEINEL instructions also say the supply must not be live during installation, that the circuit should be checked with a voltage tester, and that installation must follow the applicable national wiring regulations. Taken together, the minimum checks before work begins are:
- Isolate the circuit at its supply and confirm it is off before touching any conductor.
- Prove the circuit is dead with a voltage tester before connecting or disconnecting anything.
- Follow the exact product instructions and the wiring rules that apply where you are, which vary by country and region.
- Use a qualified electrician where the product instructions or local rules require one, which LEDVANCE’s advice indicates for all electrical connections.
This article describes how floodlights work and what their specifications mean. It is not a wiring guide.
Where motion sensors can misbehave
Motion sensors respond to changes in their environment, and not every change is a person. STEINEL warns that gusts, snow, rain and hail may cause unwanted activation, because the sensor may not distinguish sudden temperature changes from heat sources. A motion floodlight should therefore be positioned and adjusted with those conditions in mind. Its sensitivity and detection range are model-specific, and weather-related false triggers are a documented limitation rather than a fault in a particular unit.
What to compare when choosing a floodlight
If more than one option is under consideration, compare these axes using the manufacturer’s current model documentation, because product ranges and ratings change:
- Standard versus motion-sensor control.
- Beam distribution and the intended coverage area.
- Light output in lumens, not wattage alone.
- Supply voltage and installation method.
- Environmental protection for the specific mounting site.
- Where published, the sensor’s detection range, sensitivity, daylight threshold and time delay.
Where a manufacturer does not publish a value you need, such as a detection range for a particular model, ask the manufacturer or check the instructions before relying on that function.
