The X-Carve was Inventables’ workshop CNC router, launched in 2015 and covered by Make: on March 3, 2015. As of October 8, 2026, the belt-driven X-Carve kit is discontinued, the X-Carve is listed as sold out on Inventables’ machine collection, and the company’s current machine line is the ball-screw-driven X-Carve Pro. Existing owners can still obtain spare parts and cutting bits through CNC Maker Shop, and Easel software remains compatible with the machine.
What the 2015 launch was
The X-Carve is a computer-controlled cutting machine that moves a router across a flat work surface, following toolpaths generated from design files. Inventables introduced it as a workshop machine for makers and small shops. The launch date is documented through the date Make: coverage appears in Inventables’ press coverage archive, which lists the article as published March 3, 2015.
This article does not give 2015 launch prices, work-area dimensions, cutting speeds, or bundle contents. No contemporaneous specification sheet for the launch configuration is available to confirm those figures, so any numbers circulating for the original machine should be checked against archived Inventables material from that period before being relied on.

Is the X-Carve discontinued?
The belt-driven X-Carve kit is discontinued. In a company announcement dated December 10, 2024, Inventables wrote: “Today, we announce that Inventables is officially sunsetting the X-Carve belt driven kits to focus on the production level ball screw driven X-Carve PRO line of machines.” This is an official company statement rather than a quote from a named spokesperson.
The X-Carve name therefore refers to a kit that is no longer sold new, and the machine currently presented as Inventables’ main product is the X-Carve Pro. A listing that says “X-Carve” in 2026 should be checked to confirm whether it is a used belt-driven unit, a leftover stock item, or an X-Carve Pro.

What changed in the later belt-driven X-Carve
Inventables’ Support FAQ, updated July 31, 2025, compares the final belt-driven X-Carve with its predecessor. The later model is described with these changes:
- A direct-drive Z axis
- Improved drive belts
- A modular wasteboard with T-slots and threaded inserts
- A surfaceable wasteboard
- Modular replacement sections for the wasteboard
- A Makita router with a precision 1/8-inch collet
These features belong to the later belt-driven model. They should not be read back into the 2015 machine, whose configuration is not documented in the sources used here.

Getting parts, bits, and software for an existing machine
Inventables says spare parts and accessories, including cutting bits, continue through its partnership with CNC Maker Shop. The X-Carve product page lists a 1/8-inch V-bit set among the accessories. Before ordering, check three things against your own machine:
- The router’s collet size. The later model’s Makita router uses a 1/8-inch collet, but an older unit may differ.
- The bit shank diameter, which must match the collet.
- Whether the part is a belt-drive component or a wasteboard section, since the belt-driven and X-Carve Pro designs differ.
Easel and Easel Pro remain compatible with X-Carve machines according to Inventables, so existing owners do not have to change their design workflow to keep using the machine.

What X-Carve Pro is rated to cut
Inventables’ X-Carve Pro FAQ, updated February 6, 2026, says the machine can carve:
- Plywood, hardwoods, and softwoods
- MDF
- Several plastics
- Corian
- Softer non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, when appropriate tooling and cut settings are used
Inventables adds that correct cut settings and chip removal are required for good results. These are manufacturer support statements, not independent test results, so the practical limits of a given job depend on the bit, the material, and the feed and depth settings you choose.

Questions to answer before choosing between the old and new machines
Because the original machine’s specifications are not documented here, a fair comparison has to be made against the machine you can actually buy or already own. Use this checklist:
- Work area and footprint: confirm the current figures on the product page of the model you are considering.
- Drive system and rigidity: belt drive on the discontinued kit, ball screw on the X-Carve Pro.
- Materials and tooling: check the material list above against the bits you plan to buy.
- Setup and software: confirm Easel or another workflow fits your files.
- Support and parts: confirm that CNC Maker Shop or Inventables will supply parts for the model you choose.
- Availability and total cost: include shipping, bits, and accessories, not only the machine price.
For an existing X-Carve, these questions mainly concern parts supply and tooling. For a new purchase, the X-Carve Pro is the model Inventables currently sells as its production line.
