The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, now styled the Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU), named it its 2024 Best Tall Building Worldwide. Its landscaped and amenity spaces are arranged in four named terraces: Forest, Beach, Garden and Cloud. The award is a 2024 result, not a standing ranking, so the year belongs in any citation of the “world’s best” claim.
What the award actually covers
CTBUH announced the award on October 2, 2024. The building record kept by the Skyscraper Center, CTBUH’s database, lists three awards for the project:
- 2024 Best Tall Building Worldwide
- 2024 Best Tall Building, 100–199 m category
- Space Within Award
The announcement gave the jury’s rationale: “The award recognizes the project’s groundbreaking approach to high-density urbanism, combining nature, community and sustainability within the city’s bustling Orchard district.” That wording is a judgement about design approach, not an independent measurement of performance.
The building at a glance
The figures below come from different sources and dates, and they do not all describe the same thing. The table shows which source gives each value.

Use 343 for what a guest can book today and 350 when describing the architect’s original brief. Current room counts can change as the hotel is refurbished or reconfigured, so check the hotel’s website before quoting either figure as current.
How the four terraces are arranged
WOHA describes the building as a high-rise tropical hospitality prototype. Instead of one landscaped podium at street level, the design stacks four distinct landscape strata and places elevated garden terraces and amenities between the guest-room blocks. The descriptions below come from the architect’s project page and describe the design programme. They are not a guarantee that every space is open to visitors.

Forest Terrace sits at the ground level. A water plaza and cascades sit among forest trees, and the terrace connects the building to the street along Claymore Road and Claymore Drive.
Beach Terrace: tropical frontage toward Orchard Road
Beach Terrace is a tropical landscape with a sandy beachfront, palms and an emerald lagoon. It faces Orchard Road, so it presents the most visible face of the hotel’s landscape from the main commercial street.

Garden Terrace: lawn, fountains and the bar
Garden Terrace is oriented toward Claymore Hill. It includes a verandah, a lawn and fountains, and garden space beside the bar and lounge. It is the terrace most clearly tied to food and drink in the design description.
Cloud Terrace: the upper event level
Cloud Terrace is the highest of the four. It contains a 400-seat ballroom, an event lawn and mirror pools, with planting beneath a photovoltaic roof canopy. Its event function distinguishes it from the three landscape-led terraces below.

Read together, the four terraces vary along three axes: the character of the landscape, the amenity or event use, and the way each one relates to guest rooms and outdoor space.

The hotel says the terrace arrangement supports cross-ventilation, self-shading and daylighting, and that these reduce the building’s overall reliance on energy. Its sustainability page also describes planting and water bodies as environmental buffers that help cool surfaces and reduce the urban heat island effect. These are the hotel’s own descriptions of its design intent. They have not been checked against measured energy use.

The 2024 sustainability figures
The hotel’s 2024 sustainability factsheet, published by Pan Pacific Hotels Group, reports the following. Each figure is the hotel’s own claim for 2024:
- Nearly 100 plant species across 12,000 square metres of foliage.
- 360 photovoltaic panels that generate 23,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy. The factsheet does not state the period over which this energy is measured, so do not describe it as an annual figure.
- Food digesters that process up to one tonne of food waste within 24 hours. This is a processing capacity, not a record of the tonnage actually processed.
What the available sources do not establish
- Structure and construction method. The sources reviewed describe the spatial layout and landscape design, but do not publish structural engineering details, load strategies for the planted terraces, or construction sequencing.
- Independent performance. No independent audit of the hotel’s energy, water or waste figures was found. The Green Mark Platinum rating is reported by the hotel.
- Visitor access. Terrace descriptions show the design intent. They do not confirm which terraces, lawns or the ballroom are open to non-guests or at what times.
- Current availability and prices. Room counts, rates and availability should be checked on the hotel’s official website on the day of any enquiry.
For construction and design readers, the building is best understood as a documented design case: a clearly named set of award-winning spatial ideas, with environmental claims that the hotel itself publishes.
