The best choice depends on three things: the size of the work, the clamps you already own, and how much you trust the accuracy claim on the label. This guide compares the four options that have published specifications from their makers and explains how to weigh those specifications.
What a right-angle assembly square does
An assembly square is a fixed L-shaped reference. You set one board against one face and the second board against the other, and the square holds them square to each other so the clamps can pull the joint tight without the corner drifting. Milescraft describes its ClampSquares for woodworking assembly and gluing, used on inside and outside corners. Rockler describes its Clamp-It as having flat faces that hold parts at 90 degrees while you clamp, drive fasteners, or wait for glue to dry.
That is a different job from a clamp that grips a joint directly. A square supports the geometry; a clamp supplies the force. Most of the decisions below come down to making sure those two things work together in your shop.
The four options with published specifications
The table lists the options with the details each manufacturer states on its product page. Where a value is not listed on the page, it is marked as not stated.

Matching the square to the work
Size is the first filter, and the two Milescraft sizes show the logic. The 4-inch pair is positioned for small projects, where a compact footprint keeps the square out of the way of the clamp heads. The 8-inch pair is positioned for boxes and shelving, where a longer reference face keeps the carcass aligned over a longer glue line.
These are the manufacturer’s examples, not limits. A narrow box side can be handled by a small square and a wide case by a large one; what matters is that the square’s faces are long enough to reach past the joint on both pieces and that the clamp can reach the square’s clamping points.

4-inch squares for small work
Choose the 4-inch size for drawer boxes, small frames, and other pieces where the joint sits close to the edges of the assembly. Because the squares are small, they are easy to reposition between glue-ups. Check that your clamp jaws still open far enough to reach past the square’s body on the thickest stock you use.
8-inch squares for boxes, shelving, and larger assemblies
Choose the 8-inch size when the joint is long or the assembly is large enough that a short reference face would let the pieces tilt. Rockler’s 8 by 8-inch Clamp-It sits in the same general size class, but it uses a different construction and mounting system, so it is not a direct substitute for the Milescraft pair.

Checking clamp compatibility before you buy
Clamp compatibility causes more wasted purchases than size does, because the interfaces differ between brands. Before ordering, walk through this list with the clamps already on your bench.
- Bar clamps: Milescraft lists bar clamps as compatible for both sizes. Confirm the bar diameter and jaw depth fit the square’s clamping points.
- C-clamps: Also listed for both Milescraft sizes. C-clamp throat depth limits how far the jaws reach across the square, so measure it.
- Fence and track clamps: Listed for Milescraft. Use these when you want the square to register against an existing jig or track.
- Rockler docking and rods: The Clamp-It uses its own docking and attachment features rather than relying on ordinary bar or C-clamp fit alone. If you plan to link squares or mount them to a rod, confirm that setup on the product page before purchase.
- Turstein hooks: The four hand-tightened hooks are the attachment method for that set. Test that the hooks seat on your stock thicknesses, up to the stated 2-inch capacity.
Construction and what it does and does not tell you
Foam-filled and glass-reinforced ABS
Both Milescraft squares are foam-filled ABS, and the Rockler Clamp-It is glass-reinforced ABS. ABS is a polymer, so the faces are less likely to mark finished surfaces than bare metal, and it is light enough to move around the bench. The construction does not by itself prove accuracy. A rigid polymer square can be out of square if it was molded or assembled poorly, and a metal square can be accurate or not depending on its machining.

CNC-machined aluminum
Turstein’s squares are machined aluminum, which is heavier and more rigid than ABS. Metal faces can mark softwood and some finishes, so consider protective pads when clamping finished work. The maker states that each square is verified to 90° ±0.025°, a tolerance that is tighter than most workshop squares. That figure is a manufacturer claim on the product page. No independent test of it was found in sources available for this guide, so treat it as the vendor’s own specification.
Weighing accuracy claims
Only one of the four options publishes a numeric angular tolerance. The others state dimensions and clamp features but no accuracy figure. That difference matters: a stated tolerance is useful for comparison, but it is still the seller’s statement. Check accuracy yourself before the first glue-up by setting the square on a flat surface, drawing a line along one face, flipping the square, and drawing a second line; if the two lines do not overlap, the square is out of square. A clamp-free check like this takes a minute and works for any of the four options.

When a clamp is the better tool
Some joints are easier to hold with a clamp that grips the joint directly. Kreg’s 90° Corner Clamp is designed for corner and T-joints in material up to 25 mm thick, and it works on the joint itself rather than alongside it. Kreg’s Right Angle Clamp is a pocket-hole tool; its pin is designed to fit a pocket hole so the two pieces stay aligned while you drive the screw. These are clamp mechanisms, not L-shaped assembly squares, so they solve related but different tasks.
Use an assembly square when you need a reference that holds the angle across a large or irregular assembly and you have clamps to spare. Use a corner clamp when the joint is small and you want the clamp to do both the holding and the alignment. For pocket-hole work, the right-angle clamp is built for that workflow specifically.
The Kreg 90° Corner Clamp product page gives the full specifications for that tool.
Buying checklist
- Measure the largest assembly you build and choose the square size that gives both faces enough length to reach past the joint.
- Confirm that the squares accept the clamp types you own, including jaw depth and throat depth.
- Decide whether you want a fixed square or a set that can be docked, linked, or hooked together.
- Choose metal if you need the most rigid reference and can protect your finished surfaces; choose ABS if you want lighter, less marking-prone squares.
- Check the square’s angle on your bench before trusting it on a finished project.

For most woodworkers starting with a dedicated assembly square, the 8-inch Milescraft ClampSquares are a practical default for boxes and shelving, and the 4-inch pair suits smaller frames and drawers. Choose the Turstein set if you want a stated 90° ±0.025° tolerance and metal construction, and accept that the figure is the maker’s own. Whichever you buy, confirm the angle on your bench before trusting it.
