What does “seaweed” mean in these bricks?
It means alginate, a biopolymer derived from seaweed, used as a binder in an unfired soil brick. Sheep wool is added separately as reinforcement. A 2023 review says a Scottish brick manufacturer used alginate at less than 20% and sheep wool at 5% or less in soil bricks, with tests reporting increased compressive strength. Those percentages describe the reported formulation, not a recipe that can be assumed to work with any soil or alginate.
Are wool and seaweed bricks really 37% stronger?
The World Bank’s 2023 report, Global Seaweed, attributes a 37% strength increase over traditional bricks to bricks made with sheep wool, clay and seaweed-derived alginate. Treat this as a reported result for that formulation, not a general property of wool-and-seaweed bricks. The available report information does not specify the original study’s full test protocol, sample details or exactly how the traditional-brick comparator was defined.
Why can alginate improve one soil brick but not another?
A 2016 peer-reviewed study by Cassandra A. Dove, Fiona F. Bradley and Siddharth V. Patwardhan tested five alginates with three soil compositions in prototype unfired clay blocks. The researchers assessed compressive and flexural strength, microstructure, abrasive strength and hygroscopic behaviour. Both the alginate type and the soil affected the results.

Alginate source and dosage matter
The greatest reported compressive-strength increase came from alginate sourced from Laminaria hyperborea; it exceeded twice the strength of the equivalent control specimen in that experiment. The study also found that increasing the alginate dosage did not consistently increase strength. These findings support a limited conclusion: some alginates can improve strength in some unfired-clay formulations, but the outcome depends on the mix.
This 2016 experiment tested alginate and soil compositions; it is distinct from the reported wool-plus-alginate brick result. It should not be used as confirmation of the 37% figure.

Strength claims need a benchmark and a test
Compressive strength is only one property, and a percentage increase is meaningful only in relation to the specimens and comparator tested. The 2023 review also describes a separate alginate-block experiment with compressive strength of 1.64 N/mm², below the 2 N/mm² minimum requirement it cites for unfired earth blocks in New Mexico. That was not the wool-brick formulation. It illustrates why a result for one mix cannot establish that another meets a particular standard.
- Material: identify the alginate source and the soil composition.
- Amount: report additive concentrations; a higher dose is not automatically stronger.
- Property: distinguish compressive strength from flexural strength or other performance measures.
- Comparison: state what control specimen or benchmark the result is measured against.
- Use: do not infer code compliance or structural suitability from a prototype strength result.
Are these bricks ready for construction?
The sources do not establish the wool-and-alginate material as a commercially available, code-approved building product or demonstrate its suitability for a specific structural application. The World Bank reports that most seaweed construction materials remain at research or pilot stage. A reported strength increase is therefore not a substitute for product certification, applicable code checks or project-specific engineering.

How this recipe differs from other seaweed-brick research
“Seaweed bricks” can refer to different materials and processes. The wool-and-alginate account concerns alginate as a binder in unfired clay. Other studies use seaweed biomass as a pore-forming agent in fired clay, or use fibres such as seagrass in adobe; those results do not test the wool-and-alginate combination.
A 2026 study of fired, 3D-printed bricks incorporating algae-based biomass reported lower thermal conductivity as algae content increased, alongside lower stiffness and strength; all tested formulations had reported compressive strength of at least 21 MPa. This is a different process and involves a tradeoff, not evidence for the unfired wool-and-alginate recipe. A 2020 study of Posidonia oceanica seagrass fibres in adobe is also a separate line of research.
