The right precision steel rule is the one whose units and graduations match the work—not necessarily the one with the finest markings. Compare the scale first, then the rule’s length, layout, width, thickness, flexibility and model-specific accuracy. A rule is useful for direct measurement and layout, but finer subdivisions alone do not guarantee tighter measurement.
Start with the units and graduations
Steel rules are direct linear measuring and layout tools. Starrett lists English, metric, combined and special graduation styles across its range, so choose a scale that fits the drawing, workpiece and measuring convention you use.
For example, the Starrett C604R-6 has 4R graduations: eighths, sixteenths, quick-reading thirty-seconds and sixty-fourths. That makes it a relevant option when you need those inch subdivisions on a compact rule. Its markings describe how the scale is divided; they do not, by themselves, establish the accuracy of a measurement.
Compare the rule’s length and physical form
Length affects where the rule can be placed and how much of a workpiece it can cover in one setup. Width and thickness affect how it sits against an edge or surface, while flexibility is a model characteristic to match to the task rather than a universal measure of quality.

Starrett’s broader range includes different lengths, graduation styles and temper choices. Check the exact model’s catalog entry rather than assuming one rule’s dimensions or accuracy apply to the brand’s other rules.
Read accuracy separately from scale resolution
A scale marked in sixty-fourths provides finer subdivisions than one marked only in eighths, but the printed divisions are not a guarantee that every reading is accurate to that increment. For a concrete example, Mitutoyo’s Series 182 catalog lists +.004/−.0035 inch (+0.1/−0.09 mm) length accuracy for specified full-flexible rules. That is a model-series specification, not a universal tolerance for steel rules.

If the job requires traceable measurement or tolerances tighter than the accuracy stated for the exact rule, use an appropriate higher-precision instrument. Do not infer suitability for close-tolerance work from the number of graduation lines alone.
Improve how you take a close reading
For a close visual reading, avoid relying on the physical end of the rule as the starting datum. Starrett’s technical guidance says the eye can read better by measuring between two lines rather than from the rule’s end to a line. Align one graduation with the starting point and read the distance to another graduation; this reduces dependence on the end edge as the reference.

Choose by the job
- Need inch subdivisions through 64ths: Consider a rule with that exact graduation pattern, such as the Starrett C604R-6, and check that its compact 6-inch length and dimensions suit the work.
- Need a different scale or length: Compare the exact graduation layout and dimensions in the manufacturer’s listing; both Starrett and Mitutoyo offer multiple configurations.
- Need a stated accuracy: Find the specification for the exact model and verify that it meets the task’s tolerance. Do not transfer a figure from another model or brand.
- Need traceability or tighter tolerances: Select a measurement instrument designed and specified for those requirements rather than treating finer rule graduations as proof of accuracy.
Protect the edge and graduations
As general handling practice, protect the measuring edge and scale from knocks, abrasion and damage that could affect alignment or legibility. The cited manufacturer material does not establish a steel-rule-specific cleaning protocol or calibration interval. Where measurement tolerance demands it, verify the rule against an appropriate reference; no universal verification schedule is established here.
