Can You Use Potato Water to Water Plants? What to Know

Cooled, unsalted potato water is an occasional way to reuse household water—not a proven plant fertilizer. Avoid salted or hot water, and stop if residue or mold appears.

You can use cooled potato cooking water on plants occasionally—but only if the potatoes were cooked without salt or other additions. Treat it as a way to reuse household water, not as fertilizer: there is no established evidence that it reliably improves plant growth, flowering, or health.

What potato water may—and may not—do

John Murgel, a horticulture and natural resources extension specialist with Colorado State University Extension, told The Spruce, in an article syndicated by Yahoo, that starchy cooking water may affect soil microbial activity more than it directly supplies plant nutrients. The report also cautions that excess starch may contribute to visible mold on the soil surface. It does not establish a measurable plant-growth benefit or a safe starch threshold. The Spruce/Yahoo report, published August 7, 2026, is expert advice reported secondhand, not a controlled trial of potato water.

No controlled study specifically testing potato cooking water on garden or house plants was located in the sources reviewed. There is no established nutrient analysis, plant-specific result, dilution ratio, or recommended schedule. So don’t count on potato water to boost growth or replace a plant-appropriate fertilizer.

When it is reasonable to use it

Use the water only if the potatoes were cooked plain. Do not use water containing salt; salt can interfere with roots’ uptake of water and nutrients, and repeated additions can risk salt accumulation. Avoid water containing bouillon, oil, butter, or other additions as a conservative precaution: the available sources do not assess those ingredients individually.

  1. Set aside water from plain, unsalted potatoes.
  2. Let it cool completely to room temperature. Do not pour hot cooking water onto roots or soil.
  3. Use it occasionally, when the plant actually needs watering. No reliable frequency or dilution ratio is established.
  4. Stop if mold or a visible residue develops on the soil surface.

Keep normal watering and feeding practices

Potato water should not change how you judge whether a plant needs water. Containers can dry faster than in-ground plants, but soil should remain moist rather than waterlogged. University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant watering guidance explains the distinction between moist soil and overwatering.

When a plant needs nutrients, choose fertilizer based on the plant and, where relevant, soil conditions. UC IPM’s potato-growing guidance describes fertilizer as a nutrient source and cautions against placing it close to stems, where it can cause burning. An Ask Extension response about growing potatoes recommends soil testing when choosing fertilizer and warns that excess nitrogen can harm crop outcomes. These recommendations concern potatoes; their rates and formulations should not be applied to houseplants or other garden plants without relevant guidance.
