Curling poinsettia leaves signal stress, but the shape of the leaves alone cannot tell you what is wrong. Check soil moisture and drainage first, then look for cold drafts or hot, drying air. If those conditions do not explain the symptoms, inspect the plant for pests or ask a local cooperative extension office for help identifying the problem.
What curling leaves can—and cannot—tell you
Curling is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A poinsettia that has become too dry may curl and drop leaves, while persistently wet soil can cause yellowing and lower-leaf loss. Drafts, drying heat, pests, or other problems may also be relevant. Compare the plant’s care and surroundings with what you can observe rather than assuming one cause from curl alone.
Check soil moisture and drainage first
If the soil is dry
Feel the growing medium before watering. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises that leaves can curl and drop when a poinsettia is allowed to become too dry. Water when the soil surface feels dry; slight drooping can also be a cue, according to University of Delaware Cooperative Extension. The University of Minnesota Extension also suggests checking whether the pot feels lightweight. Avoid relying on a fixed weekly schedule, because the plant and growing medium should guide the decision.
If the soil stays wet
Check whether water can escape through the pot’s drainage holes and whether it is collecting in a saucer or decorative cover. Iowa State notes that keeping poinsettias too wet often yellows and drops lower leaves. Water thoroughly when the plant needs it, let excess drain, and empty any cover or saucer holding water. For a step-by-step watering method, Iowa State’s watering guidance recommends removing the decorative cover, watering in a sink, and returning the plant after it has drained.

Review the plant’s location and recent moves
Keep the poinsettia away from cold, drafty windows and doors, as well as fireplaces and heating vents that blow hot, dry air. Extension guidance from University of Maryland Extension recommends avoiding both cold drafts and drying heat sources, and allowing water to drain rather than leaving the pot in a water-filled saucer. If the curling began after a move or a change in temperature, that timing is worth considering, but it does not prove the cause.
University of Delaware Cooperative Extension warns that temperatures below 50°F can damage poinsettias. This is a damage threshold, not proof that a particular plant’s curling was caused by cold; consider its recent exposure and other care conditions as well.

Inspect for pests if basic care checks do not explain the symptoms
Look over the foliage, including the undersides of leaves, for visible signs of insects or other damage. The University of Florida IFAS Extension lists aphids, mealybugs, scales, whiteflies, and spider mites among pests that attack poinsettias. Curling by itself does not identify any one of them.
If symptoms persist or you cannot interpret what you see, contact your local cooperative extension office for diagnostic guidance. A diagnosis may require inspecting the plant and its visible damage; avoid treating it for a specific pest or disease based only on leaf curl.
