The color alone does not identify the cause. Check what changed recently, then inspect soil, drainage, light, and foliage before reaching for fertilizer.
Start with what changed
Note when yellowing began and whether it followed a change in watering, a move indoors or outdoors, a cold spell, a draft, or a seasonal transition. University of Minnesota Extension says yellow leaves are “caused by abrupt changes in soil moisture, air temperature or drafts.” Seasonal yellowing can also occur in spring or fall, but the response varies with hibiscus species and growing conditions.
Check water and drainage
Both overly wet and overly dry soil can stress hibiscus. Aim to keep the root zone relatively moist without leaving it saturated, and make sure a container can drain freely. Letting the plant wilt from dryness or leaving roots in water can contribute to yellowing and leaf drop. In cooler winter conditions, hibiscus generally needs less water.
Consider light and acclimation
Hibiscus generally does best in bright light. University of Minnesota Extension recommends 4 to 5 hours of bright direct sunlight for hibiscus grown in Minnesota; this is regional guidance, not a universal requirement for every species or climate. If moving a plant outdoors, acclimate it gradually to stronger sun rather than exposing it suddenly. Also consider whether a recent move left it in a much dimmer spot.

Inspect leaves and new growth for pests
Look closely at leaves, tender stems, and leaf undersides for aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, and mealybugs, as well as signs of feeding. Washing foliage periodically may be appropriate. If treatment is needed, use only products labeled for hibiscus and the intended location, and follow the product label.
When nutrients may be involved
Nutrient availability is one possibility, but yellowing by itself does not establish a deficiency. Pale or yellow new leaves can raise the possibility of a micronutrient issue. Alkaline soil can limit iron or manganese availability, and iron may occasionally need supplementation. Consider soil pH or nutrient availability if the yellowing persists despite suitable watering, drainage, light, and temperature; seek local extension guidance before applying a targeted micronutrient treatment.
