In a typical U.S. household plug, two prongs connect an appliance to the hot and neutral wires. A third prong connects it to the equipment-grounding system, providing a low-resistance path for fault current that can help a fuse or circuit breaker shut off power. Two-prong plugs lack that separate ground connection, but they may still be polarized: one blade is wider than the other.
What the third prong does
The third prong is the equipment ground, not normally a third current-carrying supply connection. In the grounding-plug design described by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the two flat blades carry current, while a third wire and round pin connect to ground. The pin is longer so it makes contact before the supply blades.
If an electrical fault energizes an appliance’s conductive case, the ground wire provides a low-resistance path for current. That can help a fuse or circuit breaker interrupt the supply and reduce shock risk. Grounding is a safety measure, not a guarantee against every shock, fire, overload, or wiring problem.
Why some two-prong plugs have a wider blade
Prong count and polarization are separate features. A polarized two-prong plug has blades of unequal width; the wider blade fits the neutral side of a compatible receptacle, helping keep the plug’s intended hot and neutral connections aligned. A non-polarized two-prong plug has equal-width blades and can be inserted either way.

The CPSC’s Guide to Home Wiring Hazards distinguishes non-polarized two-pole, polarized two-pole, and three-wire grounding receptacles. So a two-prong plug is not necessarily non-polarized, and polarization does not provide the separate fault-current path that grounding does.
What the outlet shape tells you—and what it does not
A two-slot receptacle does not provide a visible equipment-grounding contact. A three-slot receptacle has a grounding contact, but its appearance alone does not establish that it is correctly wired or actually grounded. Receptacle compatibility is not proof of safe installation.

Grounding is one part of a broader electrical safety system. Fuses and circuit breakers protect against overcurrent, while GFCI devices address ground-fault leakage in applicable locations. These protections serve different functions; a grounding prong alone does not prevent every electrical hazard.
If a three-prong plug will not fit
Do not cut off the grounding pin or assume a three-to-two-prong adapter creates a ground. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) warns that such adapters may not be properly grounded and advises consulting a qualified electrician when a grounded receptacle is needed. U.S. scope and a brief code-history note
This explanation concerns common U.S. household plugs and receptacles; systems and plug designs differ internationally. ESFI’s 2015 guide, Outlets: The Ins and Outs, says grounding-type receptacles were first required for all 15- and 20-ampere receptacle outlets in the 1971 edition of the National Electrical Code. That is a historical code detail, not a statement of current requirements or local rules for existing buildings.
