Older incandescent mini-light strings are often wired in series, so every bulb in a section sits on one continuous current path. When one filament burns out, or a bulb or connection in that path opens, current stops for the whole section. The bypass meant to prevent this, a small shunt inside each bulb, does not always work, which is why one bad bulb can darken everything. Some strings split their lights into several circuits, so only one section may go dark, and many LED strings are built differently altogether.
How series wiring turns one bulb into a whole-section outage
In a series circuit, current has only one path. It flows through each bulb in turn, and it must pass through every connection to complete the loop. If that path opens at any point, current stops everywhere along it. The U.S. Department of Energy’s explainer “How Do Holiday Lights Work?” puts the older behavior plainly: “When a bulb goes out in a series, it used to be that the entire series would go out.”
The break does not have to come from a burned-out filament. A bulb that has worked loose in its socket, or a damaged connection in the wiring, can open the circuit in exactly the same way. iFixit’s guide, “Half of Christmas String Lights Won’t Light Up (Incandescent),” updated March 5, 2024, makes the same point: a dark section usually means an interruption somewhere in that series path, not necessarily a bulb you can see is broken.
What the shunt is supposed to do
Many incandescent mini-light bulbs contain a small internal wire, called a shunt, that is meant to take over when the filament fails. The Department of Energy describes it as a lower-resistance route that lets current continue past a failed bulb. Under normal operation the shunt is insulated from the filament’s connection. When the filament burns out, that insulating coating breaks down and the shunt conducts, so the rest of the section stays lit while the dead bulb stays dark.

The shunt is a bypass, not a guarantee. If the coating does not break down or the shunt does not conduct, the open circuit remains and the section goes dark. This is the main reason a single burned bulb can still take out a whole run of lights on an older set, and it is why a bulb that looks intact can still be the culprit.
Reading the pattern: whole string or one section
The pattern of the outage is one of the most useful clues. Incandescent sets are often divided into several series circuits, and the lights on each circuit are arranged so that an open circuit in one section can leave another section lit. A set that is half dark is therefore consistent with a single open section, while a set that is entirely dark points toward something affecting the whole set, such as the power supply.

A dark section does not prove that a visibly blown bulb is the cause. A bulb can be unseated or defective with no obvious sign of damage. That is why the check should start with the socket and connections rather than with the glass alone.
Incandescent and LED sets are not wired the same way
The explanation above applies most directly to older incandescent mini-lights. Many modern LED strings use parallel-connected segments. In that design, one failed LED is less likely to extinguish a large part of the set, because current can still reach other segments. The Home Depot’s guide “How to Fix Holiday Lights,” updated October 1, 2026, describes typical LED configurations of this kind, but designs vary, so treat this as a common pattern rather than a rule for every product.

LED strings still fail. A connector, rectifier or diode, moisture intrusion, or another product-specific fault can darken a segment or the whole set. Repairability also differs: many incandescent strings have replaceable bulbs and accessible plug fuses, while many LED sets are sealed or lack an accessible fuse.
Troubleshooting a dark string, step by step
- Identify the bulb type and the pattern. Note whether the set is incandescent or LED, and whether all lights are out or only one section. The answer determines which steps apply.
- Unplug the string. Do this before touching bulbs, sockets, or the plug fuse.
- Check power and visible damage. If the whole string is dark, confirm the outlet works with another device. Inspect the cord and plug for cracks, melting, pinching, or exposed wire.
- Check bulbs in the dark section. On a replaceable-bulb set, press each bulb firmly into its socket and look for bulbs that have shifted. A bulb tester can help identify a bulb that looks intact but is not conducting. Replace with a bulb of the type and rating the set specifies.
- Check the plug fuse, if present. Use the value printed on the plug or fuse. Never install a fuse with a higher rating than the set specifies, because that removes the protection the fuse provides. Some LED strings have no accessible fuse, so do not assume one exists.
- Stop if the set is still faulty or damaged. Wiring faults can be dangerous to repair. Do not tape over exposed line-voltage wiring, and do not keep using a string with seriously damaged wiring. Replace a damaged or persistently faulty string.
When repair is not worth the risk
If a section stays dark after the bulbs are reseated and the fuse checks out, the fault is likely in the wiring or a connector, which is harder to locate and riskier to fix. Retire the string rather than improvising. Keeping the set unplugged during every inspection is the single most important safety step, and it applies to every type of light set discussed here.

Basic electrical safety is also relevant beyond holiday lights. If you are testing outlets or working with extension cords for an outdoor display, use the same caution: confirm the source is dead before touching any connection.
