But access is far from universal, and millions of households with a dishwasher said they used it zero times in a typical week. The clearer story is uneven access and use—not a confirmed nationwide retreat.
How common are dishwashers in U.S. homes?
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s preliminary 2024 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) estimated 132.54 million primary-residence homes. Its appliance table counted 99.47 million with a dishwasher and 33.06 million without one—about 75% with a dishwasher. The figures are preliminary and may change. EIA’s 2024 table provides the underlying estimates, and its RECS program page describes the preliminary data.
A separate measure points in the same general direction: the U.S. Department of Energy cited a 73.9% household dishwasher-ownership estimate from the 2019 American Housing Survey in a 2022 analysis. That figure and the 2024 RECS estimate come from different surveys and years, so they are context, not a like-for-like trend line. Together, they do not establish that dishwasher ownership is falling.
Having a dishwasher does not mean using it
In the preliminary 2024 RECS results, 19.17 million homes with a dishwasher reported using it zero times in a typical week. That is a distinct group from the 33.06 million homes without a dishwasher: appliance presence and weekly use are different measures.

- Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
- HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.
The pattern is not new. EIA’s 2017 overview of its 2015 RECS results reported that 79.7 million households had a dishwasher, and 16.0 million of those households—20%—never used it. Across all households, 54% both had and used a dishwasher. The 2015 figures are useful historical context, but they should not be directly compared with 2024 counts as a precise change because they are different survey years and measures. See EIA’s 2015 RECS overview.
Why might an apartment or rental home lack one?
EIA’s 2024 table breaks dishwasher estimates out by housing type and owner-or-renter status, making those useful ways to examine differences in access. Its 2015 overview also reported that about one quarter of households with an unused dishwasher were in apartment buildings with five or more units. These figures show that multifamily housing is relevant to the discussion; they do not prove that apartment living or renting causes a household to lack or not use a dishwasher.

The available figures do not identify why an individual home lacks a dishwasher. Kitchen layout, plumbing or electrical constraints, space, household preferences, and installation decisions may matter in a particular property, but the cited surveys do not establish them as nationwide explanations. For a renter, the practical answer is to check the listing, lease, and installed appliances; the national ownership figures cannot tell you what a specific unit includes.
Do price and noise explain a national decline?
They are purchase considerations, but the available evidence does not show they are causing dishwasher ownership to fall. DOE’s 2022 dishwasher standards analysis cited a 2019 national consumer survey in which price ranked first among 18 purchase factors, followed by sound, style, and brand; energy efficiency ranked fifth and energy-bill savings sixth. This describes what consumers considered when purchasing, not why homes currently lack a dishwasher.

DOE also said that higher prices may lead owners or landlords to repair an existing unit and defer replacement. That is a possible response to purchase cost, not evidence that recent prices have reduced dishwasher provision across U.S. homes. The department’s dishwasher standards technical support document (January 2022) says: “For new homes, it is unlikely that a small increase in dishwasher price would cause home builders to omit a dishwasher if it was part of their kitchen design, as is very common.” This is DOE’s analysis, not a current survey of builders or new-home installations.

The figures support a careful conclusion: dishwashers remain common, but a substantial minority of homes do not have one, and ownership does not ensure weekly use. They do not establish a national trend of builders dropping dishwashers. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Characteristics of New Housing page describes annual new-housing data, but the information cited here does not provide a current dishwasher-installation rate.

For a homeowner planning a kitchen or replacing an appliance, the evidence-backed purchase considerations are price, sound, style, brand, and energy efficiency. For builders and renovators, whether to include a dishwasher remains a project-specific design decision; the national ownership estimates alone do not determine what a particular household needs.
