Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter co-founded Serena & Lily in 2003. Dugan brought a background in art and textile design; Kanter brought retail and business experience from her Mill Valley Baby & Kids store. The brand began with nursery and crib bedding.
How Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter met
Their partnership grew out of Kanter’s Mill Valley Baby & Kids store. Dugan had created hand block-printed fabrics and accessories for interior designers and boutiques, and brought her design portfolio to the store in 2003. The W. P. Carey magazine at Arizona State University says the two decided to join forces within 24 hours of meeting; Kanter later recalled that Dugan left her portfolio on October 2 and that they met a week later. How the early business reached customers
The company first operated as a wholesale brand. A 2015 profile by Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey magazine reports that Serena & Lily sold baby products through 600 specialty stores, including Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus, before launching its own website. What the name means
“Serena” and “Lily” refer to the co-founders’ first names: Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter. Serena & Lily was not started by one person whose full name is Serena or Lily.
