Whirlpool WTW5057LW0 Troubleshooting: A Practical Fix-It Guide

A practical guide to troubleshooting a Whirlpool WTW5057LW0 top-load washer: safe home checks for fill, drain, spin, wet loads, suds, and error codes, plus clear signs that a technician is needed.

Most basic Whirlpool WTW5057LW0 top-load washer problems, including a washer that will not start, will not fill, will not drain or spin, or leaves clothes wet, begin with checks you can make from outside the cabinet: power, both water supplies, a fully closed lid, load size and balance, detergent type, and drain-hose setup. If those checks do not resolve the problem, or if the washer keeps holding water or repeats a fault code, stop using it and arrange qualified service. Internal wiring, pump, pressure-system, drive, and control-board testing belongs to a technician, not to a home repair.

Confirm the exact model before you troubleshoot

Whirlpool’s product page and owner documentation identify this line as the WTW5057LW family, a top-load washer with a removable agitator. The complete model number, including the final characters, is printed on the rating label. Use that full number, not the family name, when you look up manuals, order parts, or compare a displayed code against a list. General Whirlpool top-load code lists may not include every code used on this exact model, so the owner documentation for your model is the authority.

To find the correct manual, use Whirlpool’s manuals portal and enter the model number from the rating label. The owner manual available at the time of writing is Whirlpool document W11545828 Rev C, dated 2024. It covers the everyday checks described below. A separate model-specific technical manual also circulates through a third-party mirror on ManualsLib. It is marked “FOR SERVICE TECHNICIAN’S USE ONLY,” and this article does not reproduce its procedures.

Start with the external checks

These checks apply to nearly every symptom, so run them first. Stop the cycle before touching anything, and keep hands dry around the controls and any standing water.

  • Power: Confirm the outlet is live and the household breaker has not tripped. Plug the washer into a working outlet and make sure the cord is not pinched behind the cabinet.
  • Water supplies: Open both the hot and cold faucets fully, and confirm both hoses are connected and not kinked.
  • Lid: Close the lid fully and make sure the cycle has actually been started, not just selected.
  • Load: Check that the basket is not overloaded or tightly packed.
  • Detergent: Confirm you are using HE detergent in the amount the package and the washer instructions specify.
  • Drain hose: Confirm the drain hose is installed correctly, as described in the drain section below.

Washer will not start or appears unresponsive

Work through the external checks above. If the washer still does not respond, note any code shown on the display, then unplug the washer for about 10 seconds and plug it back in. If it still does not start, or the display keeps showing a code after the reset, arrange service. Do not open the cabinet to look for a loose connection; that work is for a technician.

Washer will not fill or fills slowly

Slow or missing fill is almost always a water-supply problem. Check that both faucets are fully open, that neither hose is kinked or flattened behind the washer, and that the household water pressure is normal at other fixtures. Whirlpool’s general top-load HE guidance links long-fill indications to the water supply and stresses that both hot and cold supplies must be on. If the washer still will not fill after these checks, or fills slowly on every cycle, treat it as a service issue.

Washer will not drain, will not spin, or clothes stay wet

This is the most common complaint, and most cases start with the load or the hose.

  1. Stop the cycle safely. Press the power or cycle control to stop, and wait until the lid is safe to open. Do not reach into water to pull out clothes until you have confirmed it is safe.
  2. Check for small items. Socks, coins, hair ties, and small garments can lodge in the pump area or between the basket and the tub. Empty pockets, and use mesh garment bags for small or loose items.
  3. Rearrange the load. Spread wet clothes evenly around the basket. A heavy item bunched on one side can prevent a proper spin.
  4. Check the drain hose. The owner manual’s troubleshooting table states that the drain hose should not extend more than 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe. A deeper hose can cause siphoning or drainage problems. Reposition it so it sits securely in the standpipe at the correct depth.
  5. Choose a suitable spin. Lower spin settings remove less water. For heavy fabrics, select a cycle with a higher spin speed and, where the control offers it, add a final spin after the load is balanced.
  6. Allow the drain cycle to finish. The owner manual describes this symptom as the washer being unable to pump water out within 10 minutes. Let the washer run the drain step fully before judging the result.

If water remains in the drum after these steps, do not keep restarting the washer. Repeated resets with water still inside can mask a fault that needs service. Stop, and call for service.

Excess suds or poor wash performance

Excess suds are usually a detergent problem. Use HE detergent only, measure the amount carefully, and reduce the dose for small loads or soft water. The service documentation for this model lists oversuds as a fault condition (code F0E2), with excess or non-HE detergent among the possible causes. If you correct the detergent and run a rinse or recovery cycle but the suds return, the fault may involve the pressure system or mechanical condition, and a technician should assess it. Do not assume a particular sensor has failed based on the code alone.

Unbalanced load, vibration, or overload

Distribute items evenly, and avoid washing a single bulky item such as a comforter or a heavy blanket by itself. Whirlpool’s general top-load guidance recommends a suitable Bulky/Sheets cycle for certain oversized, nonabsorbent items. If the washer still vibrates or walks heavily after the load has been rebalanced, stop the cycle and check that the washer is level on all four feet.

If the empty basket bounces more than once when you press it gently, that points to a suspension issue. The technical manual treats this as a technician check, so do not disassemble the washer to investigate.

Error codes and flashing lights

A displayed code is a clue, not a diagnosis. Write down the exact code, including any letters and numbers, before you unplug the washer, because a reset clears the display. A reset can clear a one-time control error, but it does not identify the cause of a fault that recurs.

When to stop and call a qualified technician

Stop using the washer and arrange service if any of the following occur:

  • The washer leaks, or water pools around the base or beneath the cabinet.
  • Water remains in the drum after the drain steps above.
  • The washer trips a breaker or GFCI, or a fuse blows.
  • There is a burning smell, scorching, or visible damage to a cord or plug.
  • A fault code recurs after the external checks.
  • The repair would require cabinet access, wiring inspection, live-voltage testing, pump testing, or control or drive diagnosis.

Keep the washer unplugged while you wait for service. Water and electricity should not be near one another during any inspection.

Routine maintenance

Whirlpool lists Affresh cleaner tablets on the WTW5057LW product page, and the service documentation includes a Clean Washer cycle that works with them. Use cleaner tablets for routine maintenance of the drum and tub. They do not repair drain, spin, fill, lid-lock, or control faults, and a Clean Washer cycle should be run with the basket empty, as the code F0E7 description above explains.

Replacement parts

Order replacement parts only after a technician or Whirlpool support has confirmed the diagnosis. A symptom does not identify a failed part. When ordering, use the full model number and the serial number from the rating label so the part matches your washer. Whirlpool’s own parts and accessory routes are the most direct source. Ordering a part based on a guess may not fix the fault and can affect warranty coverage, so confirm the warranty terms with Whirlpool before buying.

Whirlpool’s owner documentation and product page are the primary sources for this model’s support routes. Use Whirlpool’s own resources first, and verify any third-party manual or parts listing against the complete model number before relying on it.
