To clean white landscaping rocks, first remove leaves and debris, then loosen visible moss or algae with a brush or rake and rinse carefully. To keep growth from returning, reduce prolonged wetness by adjusting watering and checking drainage. Some stones will remain gray even when clean, and no single cleaning method is suitable for every rock bed.

Start with debris, moisture and drainage

Leaves and dead plant material can encourage algae growth and make a pale rock bed look dirty. Remove them regularly rather than letting them collect between the stones. Cornell Cooperative Extension also advises watering plants rather than the pebbles, since stones kept wet for long periods can develop algae: Cornell Cooperative Extension’s guidance on pebbles in the garden.

If growth keeps coming back, look beyond the rock surface. Check whether water sits in the bed after rain or irrigation, and whether shade is keeping it damp. As Ask Extension expert Diana Rohlman, PhD, advised a reader with a mold problem in a flower bed, “I would also recommend taking a look at the flower beds themselves, to see if they are overly moist, which would be causing the mold problem.” Improving drainage or changing how nearby plants are watered may address the conditions that let growth recur.

Choose a cleaning method for the stone and setting

Small decorative stones

Clear debris first, then rinse the stones if the bed drains well and the runoff will not harm nearby planting. Growth among very small stones can be difficult to remove without shifting or disturbing them. In a 2016 Ask Extension answer, an expert noted that there may be little to do for very small stones; avoid expecting a quick treatment to restore every pebble in place. Read the Ask Extension answer about mold on small river rock.

Larger stones and accessible surfaces

For larger stones, scraping or scrubbing can loosen buildup where you can reach it. In the same 2016 answer, the expert suggested scraping where practical and mentioned a half-water, half-vinegar mixture for larger stones. Treat that as source-specific advice, not a tested standard: vinegar can affect nearby plants, so protect them and avoid runoff into planted areas.

Moss on walls and gravel paths

A separate 2026 Ask Extension response concerned moss on a stone wall and gravel paths, not a flower-bed rock mulch. It recommends a stiff brush for the wall and a stiff-pronged rake for paths. The responder also suggested pressure washing below 1500 PSI and wearing protective clothing. That is the individual respondent’s practical advice, not a universal safety standard or a guarantee that pressure washing is appropriate for your rock bed. Follow the washer’s instructions, consider whether the surface and surrounding materials can tolerate the spray, and protect nearby plants. Use chemical treatments cautiously

The two Ask Extension answers give different vinegar mixtures: the 2016 answer suggests equal parts water and vinegar for larger stones, while the 2026 response describes the responder’s use of one part vinegar to ten parts water for moss. These are separate anecdotal suggestions, not a standardized or comparatively tested recipe. Either mixture may affect nearby plants, so keep it off foliage and avoid treating planted areas as though vinegar were risk-free.

The 2016 extension expert warns that commercial mold-removal products are designed to kill plant life and may harm flowers and other plants. Do not apply a cleaner or herbicide casually in a planted bed. Check the product label for approved uses and precautions, and protect desirable plants. UC IPM likewise cautions that herbicides can injure desirable plants when managing weeds around inorganic mulch: UC IPM’s guidance on mulches.

Know what cleaning can—and cannot—change

Dirt, leaves and surface growth can obscure a stone’s original appearance, but cleaning cannot necessarily make every rock bright white. A commercial pebble-cleaning guide notes that a stone with a gray cast will remain gray even when clean; treat that as a practical caveat rather than independent performance evidence. If the stones look evenly gray after debris and growth are removed, their natural color may be the reason.

White rock mulch also affects the planting around it. Cornell notes that heat, rock thickness, drainage and plant needs matter when deciding whether pebbles suit a planting. UC IPM describes gravel and pebbles as stable inorganic mulches that can be difficult to keep weed-free, and warns that reflective white rock can increase light enough to damage sensitive plants. Consider those trade-offs when adjusting a bed or choosing rock, not only when cleaning it.

A simple maintenance routine

  1. Clear debris: Pick out fallen leaves and dead plant material before they accumulate.
  2. Check moisture: Water plants rather than the stones where practical, and look for standing or persistently retained water.
  3. Loosen visible growth: Use a brush, rake or scraper suited to the stone size and location.
  4. Rinse selectively: Rinse only where drainage and nearby plants make runoff manageable; use pressure cautiously and follow equipment instructions.
  5. Reassess recurring growth: If it returns, address the bed’s moisture, drainage or shade conditions rather than repeatedly treating only the surface.
