Peonies are the clearest documented example of a flowering plant that stays in the ground for decades. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach reports that 50- to 60-year-old peonies are not uncommon in older Iowa neighborhoods. That is a regional observation, not a guarantee for every peony or every climate, and no published ranking of longest-lived flowering plants exists that would let anyone name a single winner.
The question also has two meanings that are often mixed up. A plant can live a long time and still flower briefly, or flower for months and have no documented lifespan at all. This article separates the two so you can judge each one on its own terms.
Start with what “stick around” means
Gardeners use “stick around” to mean two different things: how many years a plant survives, and how many weeks or months it stays in bloom. Lifespan and blooming season are independent. A plant with a short flowering window can outlive a plant that blooms all summer, and a long-blooming plant may have no published information about how old it gets.
Plant life cycles are classified by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in three groups:

- Annuals complete their life cycle in one growing season.
- Biennials generally grow in their first season, then flower, set seed, and die in their second.
- Perennials live for multiple years. Herbaceous and woody perennials are, in the RHS’s words, “potentially much longer lived – from a few years to many decades or more.”
“Perennial” describes a plant’s habit, not a promised number of years. A perennial can die young from poor drainage, cold, or neglect, and the RHS range is a broad possibility rather than a guarantee.
Peonies: the best-documented long-lived flower
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in its publication Longevity of Perennials (originally published February 22, 2006), states: “it’s not uncommon to see 50- to 60-year-old peonies in older neighborhoods in Iowa.” The observation is useful because it describes plants that have stayed in place for generations under ordinary garden care, not in a laboratory or a managed collection.

Keep the limits of that statement in view:
- It describes older Iowa neighborhoods. It does not establish how long peonies live in hotter, wetter, or milder regions.
- It gives an observed range, not a maximum age. No exact upper limit for peonies is established.
- It does not separate cultivars. Older garden peonies are often long-established plantings, and the specific varieties are rarely identified in the observation.
Why there is no official ranking
No authoritative, cross-species ranking of flowering plant lifespans was found in the sources reviewed for this article. Extension and horticultural guidance describe categories and conditions, not comparative records. Any list that names a “longest-living flower” without citing measured ages is making a claim the evidence does not support.
What the guidance does provide is the conditions that determine whether a perennial reaches its potential. Those are covered below.

Long bloom is a different comparison
The Missouri Botanical Garden’s guide to long-blooming perennials selected its examples from plants that “displayed a long-season of bloom at the Missouri Botanical Garden based on several years of bloom data.” That data tracks flowering periods, not how long any individual plant survives. The examples show how to compare flowering seasons, not lifespans.
| Plant | Documented flowering window | Documented lifespan | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purple poppy mallow (Callirhoe involucrata) | Mid-spring to fall | Not stated | Missouri Botanical Garden, long-blooming perennials guide |
| False aster (Boltonia asteroides var. latisquama ‘Snowbank’) | Late summer to early autumn | Not stated | Missouri Botanical Garden, long-blooming perennials guide |
| Cut-flower scabiosa (Scabiosa caucasica ‘Fama Deep Blue’) | June to late September, repeat-flowering | Not stated; RHS notes plants are less productive after year three | Royal Horticultural Society |
| Peony (cultivars not identified) | Not stated in the sources reviewed | 50 to 60 years observed in older Iowa neighborhoods | Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, 2006 |
The scabiosa entry shows why a long season is not a lifespan claim. A plant can flower from June into late September and still decline after about three years, which makes it a short-lived perennial in practice even though its bloom window is long.

What decides how long a perennial lasts in your garden
Hardiness and winter protection
The RHS notes that many perennials can stay outdoors all year, while less hardy kinds need winter protection. Check a plant’s hardiness rating for your area before planting. A perennial outside its hardiness range may not return at all, regardless of how well it is cared for.
Soil and site
The RHS advises choosing plants suited to the garden’s own soil and growing conditions. Iowa State Extension recommends weighing hardiness and cultural requirements when selecting a perennial. A plant in the wrong site will decline sooner, which shortens its life more than any other single factor.

Division and maintenance
The RHS suggests lifting and dividing some perennials to keep them flowering well or to control clump size. Division is what allows many long-established perennials to keep going. Neglecting it can leave a clump crowded, weak, and short on flowers, even when the plant itself is healthy.
Checklist for choosing a long-lived flowering plant
- Confirm the plant is a perennial, not an annual or biennial, for the lifespan you want.
- Check the cultivar and hardiness rating against your climate and winter lows.
- Match the plant to your soil, drainage, and light.
- Plan for periodic division or feeding if the plant is a clump-forming perennial.
- If you want a long bloom season, compare flowering windows separately from lifespan.
For a garden that should last decades, peonies have the strongest documented track record among the flowers reviewed here. Choose the cultivar, site, and care plan with the same attention you would give any permanent planting.
