When Should You Fertilize Your Squash Plants?

Prepare soil before planting and use a soil test to guide fertilizer. If a side-dressing is recommended, apply it at the stage specified by your local Extension service.

Prepare the soil before planting, and use a soil test to decide whether your squash needs fertilizer and how much. A later side-dressing may be appropriate, but the right timing differs by region: Extension guidance ranges from early growth to flowering or fruit set. Follow local recommendations and the fertilizer label rather than applying one schedule or rate everywhere.

Start with a soil test and planting-time soil preparation

A soil test is the best starting point for deciding whether fertilizer is needed and what amount to use. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension recommends testing for the most accurate fertilizer guidance. Prepare the soil before planting, then apply fertilizer at planting only if your test results or local recommendations call for it.

Recommendations differ by location and growing conditions. For example, the Georgia guide gives a fallback of 3 tablespoons of 5-10-15 fertilizer per planting mound when a soil test is unavailable; that is guidance for its own context, not a universal squash dose. UC IPM discusses applying fertilizer containing nitrogen and phosphorus before planting when manure or other organic material has not been used. Alabama’s 2025 summer-squash guide advises applying an all-purpose fertilizer at planting when a soil test is unavailable, following the product label.

When to apply a later side-dressing

A side-dressing is fertilizer placed beside growing plants rather than mixed into the soil before planting. Extension sources use different plant-stage cues, so follow the recommendation for your area instead of combining the dates into a single schedule.

Mississippi State University Extension When plants have several leaves but before they begin to bloom.
Alabama Cooperative Extension System When plants reach 8 to 10 inches tall.
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension After plants begin flowering and small fruits form, following soil-test recommendations.
UMass Amherst When summer squash begins to bear; see its regional guidance for amount and placement.

How to apply fertilizer without damaging plants

  • Keep fertilizer away from stems. Alabama specifies placing its side-dressing 4 to 6 inches from the stem; use your local guidance for placement.
  • UC IPM describes applying side-dressing in narrow bands or furrows and watering thoroughly afterward.
  • Follow the label for the product’s rate and application method. Do not assume that a recommendation for one fertilizer analysis applies to another.
  • Do not add extra nitrogen just because a plant is growing slowly; slow growth alone does not establish that the plant needs fertilizer.
