For a straight taper on a wooden rake or squeegee handle, the most direct method is a disc sander fitted with a shop-made, angled guide block clamped to its table. The guide holds the handle at the taper angle while you rotate it, which keeps the taper even around the stock. Contoured or hand-shaped grips are a different job: remove most of the material with rasps, files, or a spokeshave first, then refine the form with sandpaper.
Sanding a straight taper with a disc sander and guide block
This method comes from a WOOD Magazine Staff answer to the question, “Please tell me the most efficient way to cut or sand the correct taper on a wooden handle for a rake or squeegee. What is the best machine to use?” The answer, published January 18, 2021, states: “We used a disc sander with a guide block clamped to the sander table.”
The steps below follow that approach.
- Establish the taper from the part the handle must fit, such as a socket or hole. No single taper angle or length applies to every handle, so measure the mating part before setting anything up.
- Cut an angled notch in a scrap guide block to match that taper. Clamp the block to the disc-sander table so that its stop, at the end of the tapered edge, sits parallel to the face of the sanding disc.
- Adjust the distance between the guide and the disc to set the taper length for your stock diameter. Trial the setting on scrap of the same diameter, then mark the point where sanding must stop.
- Hold the handle firmly against the guide. Feed it slowly toward the stop while rotating it, so the taper remains even around the circumference.
- Check the fit against the mating part, and stop at the mark rather than sanding past it.
Limits of the disc-sander method
- The source names a disc sander but does not identify a model, abrasive grit, or wood species.
- Use suitable workholding and follow the machine’s own instructions for safe operation. Eye and dust protection are sensible at any disc sander.
- The method is written for straight tapers on round stock. It does not address fairing a shaped grip.
When the handle is contoured or hand-shaped
A straight taper on round stock is a different operation from fairing a contoured grip. For grips with curves, dips, or facets, shaping tools should remove most of the material before any sanding begins. Sanding alone is slow for that job and makes it easy to flatten the profile you intended to keep.
Rasp and spokeshave first
Common Woodworking’s “Setting Up a Hammer” (retrieved October 8, 2026) discusses reshaping a handle with a spokeshave and a rasp. A rasp can remove substantial material and shape curves or dips, while a spokeshave is another option for taking material off a handle. Use the coarser tool to get close to the form, then the finer one to bring it in.

A plane-handle sequence
Konrad Sauer’s “Shaping a Plane Handle” in Canadian Woodworking (published July 15, 2015, revised January 15, 2022) uses rasps for coarse and medium work, files for finer work, and then sandpaper to blend the facets. The author’s sanding sequence is:
- 220 grit
- 320 grit
- 400 grit
- 600 grit
The author notes that a coarser grit may be needed and that 220 grit does most of the sanding work in that example. This is one maker’s method for one plane handle, not a fixed sequence for every project.

- Multi-Stage Sandpaper Assortment: This Shineboc 9x3.6 inch sandpaper pack includes 21 sheets with 7 grits (120/220/400/600/800/1000/2000), 3 sheets per grit, suitable for all sanding stages from rough to fine
- Premium Material: Crafted from high-quality silicon carbide, it is electrostatically coated to ensure an uniform distribution of grit. This results in long-lasting performance and high resistance to damage
- Wet and Dry Use: It can be utilized for both wet and dry sanding. Wet sanding helps reduce the occurrence of scratches and minimizes dust emissions, while dry sanding offers faster material removal and convenience
- Anti-Clogging: With excellent anti-clogging properties, it resists the accumulation of dust and debris. This guarantees a sharp cutting edge and less frequent replacement
- Tear-Resistant: A reinforced backing layer is incorporated, which prevents the sanding sheets from tearing under high pressure or when used on irregular surfaces
While shaping, check fairness by sight and touch. The author recommends feeling the handle with both hands and watching highlights and shadows for uneven areas.
Curves, backer blocks, and grit choice
Ken Burton’s “Smoothing Curves: Trading Lumps and Bumps for Fair Lines” on Woodcraft (retrieved October 8, 2026) covers hand and power sanding of curves. Its general guidance for curved work is:

- Wide Variety of Grit - Perfect selection of different grits, Including 5 sheets of each grit: 400/ 600/ 800/ 1000/ 1200/ 1500/ 2000/ 2500/ 3000, total 45 sheets.
- Suits Your Needs Perfectly - Wet and dry sandpaper, great assortment of fine to superfine sandpaper, you can use fine grit sandpaper for fine woodworking, cleaning and polishing metal, sanding clay, wood furniture finishing, wood turning finishing, automotive jobs and more.
- Handy Sizes - Silicon carbide sandpaper size 9 x 3.6 inches, It can be easily cut and folded to fit any hand tool or work piece crevice.
- High Quality Sandpaper - Made of waterproof silicon carbide, electro coated, It works well dry and wet sanding. Each product we need to do 100% quality-check before shipping to ensure the paper not easily fall off when in use.
- Easy to Identify - Good variety of grits from coarse to smooth, so you have a good choice to fit any type of projects, the grit is on the back of sandpaper for easy identification.
- Use a backer block shaped to complement the work where practical, so the abrasive follows the contour.
- Avoid deforming the profile while sanding.
- Start with the finest grit that removes the remaining tool marks, saw marks, or power-sanding scratches, then move to finer grits as needed.
How cleanly the shape was cut and which tools were used both affect which starting grit works, so the marks you can see on the handle should set the starting point.
A scraper and dowel example
Common Woodworking’s “Refining The Spatula” (retrieved October 8, 2026; the publication date is not shown on the retrieved page) gives one progression for a shaped wooden piece. A card scraper removes ridges, 120 grit handles obvious irregularities, and 240 grit smooths the surface. For an internal curve, the article wraps sandpaper around a dowel. This is a spatula project, so treat its grit sequence as an example rather than a standard.

Comparing the three approaches
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Disc sander with a shop-made guide block (WOOD Magazine Staff, January 18, 2021) | A straight taper on round stock, especially when the same taper must be repeated | Requires a disc sander and a guide cut to the taper. The source gives no model or dimensions. |
| Rasp and file, followed by hand sanding (Konrad Sauer, Canadian Woodworking, 2015, revised 2022; Common Woodworking, “Setting Up a Hammer”) | Freehand shaping, changing grip contours, and removing material in controlled increments | Slower, and it depends on checking the shape by sight and touch as you go. |
| Shaped backer block and hand-held abrasive (Ken Burton, Woodcraft, retrieved October 8, 2026) | Refining curves and removing the tool marks left by shaping | Results depend on a backer that supports the intended contour and on choosing a grit that suits the marks present. |
